My Mommy School Philosophy

Mommy School is all about constructive fun with developmentally appropriate learning!
My philosophy is that toddlers learn through experiences. I believe that toddlers learn by seeing and doing, so Mommy School is intended to be action-based. I believe that most 2- and 3-year-olds are not yet ready for pencil/paper activities simply because they dont learn this way! My hope is to provide you with a few tools to help guide your toddlers learning. For me, the most exciting part about teaching my toddler is seeing the world through his eyes. He is starting to understand the world for the very first time! Because this is the first time that our toddlers are exposed to many concepts, please dont expect your toddler to catch on immediately. It can be difficult at times to gage your own success because toddlers cant always communicate exactly what they are learning. You will see their progress later on as they continue to build connections to the world around them! I compile a variety of activities in my Mommy School units, but I dont expect to do them all. Allow your child to experience letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and other thematic elements in their own unique way. You will quickly see that your child thrives with some learning methods and not others. Pick and choose activities that work best for you and your child. I am trained as an Early Childhood Educator, and I taught First Grade for 4 years. However, I am building my Mommy School units from a mothers perspective. I am a Mom first, and a Teacher second. Remember that I have searched the web high and low seeking the very best toddler activities. I am not the genius behind all of themI simply gather them all in one place. Be sure to look at the credits section for more great ideas! Most of all have fun! Children will see your attitude, and will respond similarly. Enjoy discovering the world with your child.

The Foot Book
Foot Book Trace childs foot. Cut out foot template once on cardstock and several more times on white paper. Cut out each. On the cardstock, write My Foot Book. This will be the cover. On each page, write a sentence about childs feet. My feet are stinky. My feet are small. My feet can kick! Staple together. Shoe Games Gather lots of pairs of shoes, and put childrens shoes into a pile. Blindfold child and ask them to feel around. Once they have picked a pair, they have to guess whose shoes they are! Make a pattern lining up the shoes. Make a giant pile of shoes. Have a race to see who can get their shoes on first!
Feet Action Words What can your feet do? Make a list of actions your feet can do. (Kick, jump, stomp, run, skip, etc.) Write the words together. Go outside and demonstrate some of the actions your feet can do! The Foot Book Measurement Measure all of your childrens feetor everyone in your family. Trace them and put them in order from smallest to largest. More Foot Measurement Trace childs foot onto construction paper. Glue down onto attached Foot Measurement worksheet. Help child to measure foot using cubes, paper clips, crayons, etc. Feet in Action Practice moving your feet in crazy positions by playing Twister!

Dress Up Fun! Wear socks that do not match or other crazy socks.

Horton TP Tube Craft Save an old toilet paper tube. Paint gray. This will be Horton! Draw on eyes and a mouth. Glue on a trunk and ears from gray foam. You can also make Hortons speck by gluing a pompom to a pipecleaner.

Dr. Seusss ABC
Alphabet Stamping Complete the attached Alphabet Stamping page. Ask your child to find a specific letter. (Find the G.) Once he/she finds the assigned letter, they can place a stamp (or sticker!) over the letter. Shaving Cream Letters Practice writing the ABCs in shaving cream! ABC Mat Create an ABC Mat using an old vinyl tablecloth or an old sheet or shower curtain. Using a sharpie, draw circles (big enough for childs feet) with each of the letters inside. Ask children to step on the letters to identify them. Or play Twister by giving instructions like Place your hand on the H and your foot on the N, etc. ABC on Cats Hat Print out the attached Cat in the Hats hat pattern. Color if desired and laminate for durability. Place on cookie sheet and ask child to play with ABC magnets on cookie sheet. Help child line up ABC magnets on the stripes of the hat. Green Eggs and Ham
Green Eggs and Ham Meal Make green eggs and ham in your classroom! Mix up some scrambled eggs and add green food coloring to them. Serve with ham and enjoy! Make green playdough! Kool-Aid Play-dough 1 c. flour 2 T. cream of tartar c. salt 2 packages of green Kool-Aid. 1 c. water 1 T. oil Green food coloring 1. In a saucepan, combine everything but the oil. Stir well. 2. Stir in oil. Add drops of food coloring. Stir well. 3. Move saucepan to stovetop and cook for 3-5 minutes on medium heat. Stir well the entire time. 4. When a soft ball starts to form, turn off the heat and remove the pan. Playdough will be hot. 5. Remove the ball of dough from the pan and let cool for a second. 6. Knead well until soft. 7. Store in airtight container or a ziplock bag.
Sweeter Green Eggs and Ham Snack Place 2 small pretzel sticks close to each other. Melt a puddle of white chocolate (or white melts) on wax paper over the pretzels. While still warm, place green M&Ms in center. This will create your own green eggs and ham sweet treat! Green Devilled Eggs Create your own devilled eggs, but add green food coloring to the filling. McBean Says Game Cut out a felt star for each child. Play McBean Says (instead of Simon Says) with your stars. For example, McBean says: Put the star on your nose. Star Cake Walk Game Cut out felt stars from many different colors of felt. Arrange in a circle on the floor. While the music is playing, walk around on the circle of felt stars. When the music stops, call out a color. The person standing on that color is out! The last person standing wins!
The Shape of Me and Other Stuff
Shape-Themed Meal Create a shape-themed meal for lunch! You may want to include some of these ideas: Circle-shaped bananas Square-shaped crackers Triangle-shaped cheese Diamond-shaped bread Shape Silhouettes Trace around shapes (or pattern blocks, tangrams, etc.) onto black construction paper. Cut out. Ask child to match the original shape to its silhouette.
Bartholomew and the Oobleck
Make your own oobleck! Mix 2 c. cornstarch with 1 c. water and add green food coloring. This will have characteristics of both a liquid and solid! Ask child to examine like a scientist.
If I Ran the Zoo

The Cat in the Hat
Cat in the Hat Snacks Layer white frosting between red gummy lifesavers. Place on top of Oreos split in half! These are also cute cupcake toppers. You can also layer frosting and gummy lifesavers and place on top of Ritz crackers, too. Thing 1/Thing 2 Handprints Paint childs palm white and fingers blue. Stamp on paper to create Thing 1s head. Now paint other hand red (but not thumb). This will be Thing 1s body. Stamp palms together! You may need to go back and paint red in between fingers to make this look like 2 legs. Once dry, add face. Dress Up Fun! Wear red and white and wear a favorite hat! If you are feeling daring, use face paint to add a black nose and whiskers. Cat in the Hat Craft Paint the edges of a paper plate black. Now cut out a tall hat shape from white construction paper. Glue on red stripes cut from red construction paper. Glue hat to top of plate. Now draw a face on the center of the plate when dry. You could also use googly eyes for eyes; a pompom for nose with pipe cleaner for whiskers.
Red and White Parfait Layer red Jello with whipped cream in a clear plastic cup. Top with sprinkles! Cat in the Hat Pizza Create your own Cat in the Hat pizza by rolling the dough into a hat shape. Make red and white stripes using cheese and pepperoni. Bake and enjoy!

Balancing! Try balancing different objects on your head! Go on a parade around the house balancing something on your head. For younger children, you could ask them to practice balancing the Fish on a dish like the Cat in the Hat does. Balance Swedish fish on a paper plate and walk around the room! Striped Hat Activity Print or trace the attached hat pattern onto several colors of paper. Laminate several colors of paper and cut into stripes. Allow child to arrange the stripes onto the hats in any way they wish. Repeat this activity as desired! Cat in the Hat Fruit Snacks Using skewers, ask child to help you create a pattern of strawberry slices and banana slices. Skewer them to create a Cat in the Hat snack! Cat in the Hat Pancakes When making pancakes, add red food coloring to half of the batter. After cooking the pancakes, make a pancake tower just like the Cats hat! Layer red and white pancakes! Cat in the Hat Headband Begin with a large piece of white construction paper. Cut out red stripes from red construction paper and glue on top to create the striped pattern. Create a 1-inch paper ring that will go around childs head. Glue hat to the ring, and staple around childs head.

Hat Dress Up! Have a hat dress-up party! Discuss and dress up in hats worn by people in various occupations. (Fireman hat, police hat, baseball cap, crown, etc.!) Rainy Day Activity Brainstorm ideas of what you can do on a rainy day. Then draw a picture of what you like to do on a rainy day inside the attached umbrella.
Thing 1 and Thing 2 Craft Sticks Paint 2 craft sticks red. Cut out a circle and make badge that says THING 1. Repeat for Thing 2. Glue on googly eyes and draw on a mouth. Glue on a blue fuzzy pompom for hair! Roll and Color The Cats Stripes! Play this game with a friend! One of you will use a red crayon and one will use a green crayon. Take turns rolling a dice and coloring in the appropriate number of hats. (If you roll 3, then you will get to color 3 hats your color, etc.) Continue until all the hats have been colored. The winner will have the most hats colored in their color. Red and White Button Patterns Create your own Cats Hat by creating a button tower of red and white buttons. Practice a red-white-red-white pattern and then let child create their own!
Hop On Pop

Memory Game Lay out 12-15 objects on a cookie sheet. Ask child to close eyes and the hide one of the objects in your pocket. See if your child can guess what is missing!
Oh the Places Youll Go!
Painting Paint a picture of a place you would like to go! Hot Air Balloon Craft Glue 3 plastic straws around the edges of a clear plastic cup with the straw ends facing out. Allow to dry for 20 minutes, and read the book while you wait! When done, blow up a balloon and glue on top of the straws.

Handprint Fish Print the attached fish bowl. Help children to dip their hands in red and blue paint (or paint their hands.) Stamp inside the fish bowl. When dry, add faces to the palms to look like fish! Fishbowl Snack Make a yummy fishbowl snack! Make berry blue Jello and divide into 4 clear plastic cups. Once the Jello has set, ask children to add their own Swedish fish to the fishbowl! Goldfish Graphing Complete the attached goldfish graphing activity using rainbow goldfish. Go Fishing! Go fishing! You could set up a wading pool with real water and plastic fish. OR you could also create your own fishing pole using a wooden dowel and a magnet on a string. Use the fish template attached. Print fish on cardstock, color, and write letters or numbers on your fish. Go fishing and identify the letter or number on the fish! Pink Yink Ink Drink Create your won Pink Yink Ink Drink just like in the book! 1/2 cup blackberries 1/2 cup strawberries 1 cup milk 1 tsp. honey + more for drizzle Blend blackberries first. SHAPE: DIAMOND
Craft Stick Kites Demonstrate how to create the shape of a diamond using craft sticks. Glue down on a piece of paper to create a kite. Decorate as desired and glue on pieces of yarn for kite strings. Two Triangles Make a Diamond! If you have foam shapes, demonstrate how putting 2 triangles together makes a diamond. You could also cut out 2 triangles out of paper and ask your child to decorate them. Then glue them together to form a diamond! Diamond Match Cut out diamond shapes of various sizes. Then trace around the shapes on a larger piece of white paper. Mix up the colored diamonds and ask your child to match them to their outline shape on the white paper. Glue in place! Playing Card Diamonds Use a deck of playing cards to do the following activities: Sort the diamond cards out on a table or the floor. Find the cards from 1 (Ace) to 10 and arrange them in numerical order. Together, count the diamonds on each playing card. Diamond Beanbag Toss Use masking tape to create a large diamond shape on the floor. Have child try tossing beanbags inside the shape. Diamond Treasure Hunt Cut out several diamond shapes from several colors of paper and hide around the room. For each color of paper, create a paper sack with a diamond of that color glued to the front. Invite child to search around the room and collect the diamonds and place inside the appropriate bag. Diamond Snacks Cut bread into diamond shapes and spread with cream cheese. Decorate with chopped veggies. Add thin strips of carrot as kite tails.
Diamond Play Dough Shape Mat Print the attached diamond play dough shape mat. Laminate for durability. Show child how to roll play dough out like a snake, and then lay it on the outline of the shape on the shape mat. Writing Rhyme While practicing writing the number three, say this rhyme to help form the numeral: Around the tree, around the tree. Thats the way to make a three! I like to practice writing numbers in fingerpaint, shaving cream, sand, or using Crayolas window crayons. Numeral Activity Print the attached number 3 pattern. Decorate it with 3 stickers, 3 pompoms, etc. Pom Pom Numbers I always introduce the number of the week using the Pom Pom Number cards you can download here: http://1plus1plus1equals1.blogspot.com/2010/06/preschool-printablespom-pom-numbers.html We lay fuzzy pompoms on the dots on the numeral and count them as we go. Three Exercises Have child do 3 hops, 3 stomps, 3 kicks, etc. Snacks Three-decker sandwiches, crackers with cream cheese with 3 raisins on top, ants on a log with 3 raisins on top. Three-Color Painting Place a piece of white paper inside an oatmeal container. Place globs of 3 colors of paint inside. Place marbles or acorns inside and roll the container around. Look at your painting! Number Review A fun way to review all the numbers is to sing The Ants Go Marching. Make number posters and ask child to hold the numeral as you sing about it. March around the house with the numerals, and really hype up the number three this week. Perhaps you could stomp the loudest or sing the loudest on this number. Card/Domino Search Search for the threes in a deck of cards. You could also search for dominos that have just 3 dots on them. Tactile Learning Cut the numeral 3 out of sand paper. Have child trace with his/her finger. You could also do a rubbing of the numeral by placing paper on the top and coloring over it.
LETTER S
S Paintings Use a tool beginning with the letter S to paint the attached S template. You might choose to use a sponge, a swatter, or a spoon. Feely Letter Glue Saran wrap to an S shape. What does this feel like? Explore with your senses! Letter S Spaghetti Party Copy the attached S pattern. Over-cook some spaghetti noodles so they will be very sticky (store these in a plastic baggy with a bit of water.) Fun Activities for Any Letter

Paint a Letter! Using pencil, write a large letter on a sheet of paper. Ask child to paint over it. Creative Writing I like to practice writing in finger paint, shaving cream, sand, or using Crayolas window crayons. Sidewalk chalk is fun, too! Light Letters Write a letter on a piece of construction paper. Use a toothpick to punch holes on the shape of the letter. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight through the holes to see the letter light up! Alphabet Soup Place ABC fridge magnets in a bowl. Use a ladle to scoop up 1 letter and identify which letter you have! Letter Driving Write a large letter on a piece of paper. Use matchbox cars to drive over the letters shape! Letter Shapes Recreate the letters shape using pipe cleaner, craft sticks, or play dough.

Cat in the Hat Craft

Instructions Print the Cat in the Hat patterns and trace on the appropriately-colored construction paper. Glue the white face to the black. Add eyes, nose, and whiskers to the white face. Cut out the hat pattern and help child to paint or color red and white stripes on the hat. Glue to the cats face.
Puzzles
Instructions Print the attached puzzles on cardstock. Laminate if desired. Cut the Grinch into 6 pieces and store in plastic bag. Cut the Cat in the Hat into 10 strips. Encourage child to identify numbers in order to put puzzle together. Store in plastic bag.

Alphabt Stamping
Instructions Print the Alphabet Stamping sheet. Ask your child to find a specific letter. (Find the G.) Once he/she finds the assigned letter, they can place a stamp or sticker over the letter.

Dr. Seuss Mat

Instructions: Print the Seuss mat on cardstock. Laminate for durability. Decorate with Dr. Seuss stickers. (Michaels usually carries a great supply of Dr. Seuss foam stickers.) Encourage child to discuss the characters from Dr. Seuss books and what books they enjoyed.
