Pronunciation
1) The sounds The pronunciation of Ecclesiastical Latin (or Church Latin) differs somewhat from that of the Classical Latin you learn in most schools. It is much closer to modern day Italian. The r is trilled like in Italian, the vowels are pretty much like in Italian, too. In the chart underneath you will see long sound and short sound. Please do not confuse this with the difference between for instance the long a and the short a in English. In Latin the sound does not change like it does in English, the sound is simply stretched to about twice its length. That does make a difference for the case endings, and it did make a big difference for the meter in Latin poetry. Throughout this textbook I have tried to place the proper macrons (, , etc.) to indicate long sounds, and accents on the words, accents which tell you where the stress is. To use an English example: the word cherry would have the stress on the e and would therefore here be rendered as chrry. If I put the accent on the y it would sound very French. Now sometimes, actually quite often, the stress in a word coincides with a long vowel in which case I the accent supersedes the macron. Example: rte pr nobis. The accent in rte is on the a but the a also has to be long. Lets look at the other sounds: Short Sound: A like U in fun E like E in fed I like I in mini Long Sound: like A in rather like E in Santa Fe like I in ravine Y and Y Diphthongs: like Y in family

Most consonants are pronounced like in English, but before the bright vowel sounds of e, i, ae, oe and y (as opposed to the dark a, o, and u) the following letters are pronounced different: C CH as in chip CC TCH as in sketch 21 40 SC SH as in shiver G G as in gem

Double consonants are technically both pronounced, but it is hard to really tell them apart like in the English innumerable. Example: Ecce, pronounced like et-che (che like in cherry). 2) The accent In Latin only one of the three last syllables of a word can be accented: The ltima (last, very rarely accented), the paenltima (almost last; paen = pen = almost, as in peninsula = almost island), or the antepaenltima (before the almost last; ante = before). You count from the last syllable backwards. The following are good rules of thumb: For two syllables: Always accent the first syllable = paenultima. Two-syllable words throughout this booklet are written without accents. Example: Ora, Pater Noster For three or more syllables: If the paenltima has a long vowel sound, accent that syllable. Example: sanctifictur, cotidinum If the paenltima has a short vowel sound, accent the syllable before it. Example: Ecclsia, fratrnitas

The Angelus
To be said morning, noon, and night to put us in mind that God the Son became man for our salvation.
V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary . . . V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord! R. Be it done to me according to thy word. Hail Mary . . . V. And the Word was made flesh. Genuflect R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary . . . V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
