Township teams take to diamond
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
Three mens baseball teams
exist in Washington Township.
The Washington Township Sena-
tors, 25+ division, 35+ division
and 45+ are some of the teams in
the New Jersey area that are a
part of the New Jersey Independ-
ent Baseball League (NJIBL).
With no time for practice and
Sunday morning games, the
teams won a combined eight
league championship games
since 1996 and recently played in
the divisional series games on
Saturday, July 28, and Sunday
July 29.
Director of the 45+ division,
Nick Frese, mentions how the
league is its own baseball organi-
zation.
Gary Shears created the New
Jersey Independent Baseball
League in 2008.
Frese said its easier to have a
league where older, married guys
with kids can continue to enjoy
the game without sacrificing fam-
ily life.
Frese is not only the general
manager of the Senators he
plays on the field with the team.
Wearing number 25, Frese rotates
between first base, second base
and outfield.
Frese, like many of the players
on the team, are playing for the

During the divisional series,
the Senators 45+ division
swept the Philadelphia Blue
Claws.
The first divisional game, Sat-
urday July 28, the Senators beat
the Blue Claws 13-2 and won 6-1
on Sunday.
The team played the South Jer-
sey Hot Stovers in the first cham-
pionship game at Delsea Drive
Park in Glassboro, Sunday Aug. 5.
The 35+ division team, beat the
Gibbstown Spartans 4-1, during
their first game in the divisional
series, Sunday, July 29.
Unfortunately for the 25+ divi-
sion, they were defeated by the
VFW 713 Orioles, 13-3.
Each team needs to win two out

ALS Cut-a-Thon
You are invited to participate
in the ALS Cut-a-Thon, which
will be held on Aug. 26 at Martino
Cartier Salon, located at 304 Hurf-
fville Cross Keys Road in Sewell.
There will be food, fun, music
and giveaways.
This event is to honor Frank
Gabrielli, a 46-year resident of
Washington Township and per-

Our purpose is to raise money
for the ALS Association Greater
Philadelphia Chapter. The money
will go directly to patient services

has uncovered more scientific
discoveries about ALS in the last
decade than in the entire
time since ALS was discovered in
1869.
We would like to raise $10,000
for this event, so we need your
help. Would you please consider
making a donation? Keep in mind
how your generosity will benefit
those stricken with ALS.
You can make a monetary do-
nation by providing a check made
payable to ALSGPC.
You may also donate gift
baskets or gift certificates that
will be raffled off during the
event.
All proceeds go to support the
battle against ALS.

ew Jersey does solar power.
Does it well. Does it too well,
as it turns out.
According to the governors office,
the state installed more solar capacity
in the first quarter of 2012 than any
other state and led the nation in solar
installations on commercial and indus-
trial properties in 2011.
Now, thats a source of pride. Being a
national leader in something other
than reality television shows is a good
thing.
But, as it turns out, you can have too
much of a good thing.
The supply of solar power has now
surpassed the demand, bringing the
market crashing down. And when the
market crashes, solar projects in the
construction phase can stop. Jobs can
be lost. The momentum of the solar in-
dustry can come to a halt.
The measure signed by Gov.
Christie, which had bipartisan sup-
port, aims to boost the market by re-
quiring power companies to purchase
more solar power. In other words, the
state is trying to increase the demand,
hoping that, eventually, it catches up to
the supply, thereby giving those in the
business of building solar projects a
reason to keep doing what theyre
doing.
We think the bill certainly cant
hurt, given the current market situa-
tion, but we also agree with experts
who think more might need to be done.
In a statement, the Mid-Atlantic
Solar Energy Industries Association
points out that the measure doesnt do
enough to prevent a recurrence of the
over-supply situation. It proposes con-
trolling the pace of solar project pro-
duction.
It might be a bit premature to take
that step, but, as the state has seen, this
is a market that, left to its own, can run
itself into the ground fairly quickly.
Give the new measure time to work.
See if the demand can catch up to the
supply. But be ready to step in if it be-
comes clear that more steps are needed
to avoid another crash.
in our opinion
Solar solution
Recent action will help the market, at least in the short term
A super-solar state
New Jersey is a national leader when it
comes to producing solar power. Oddly,
that is now a bad thing. Supply exceeds
demand, and the market has crashed.
A measure signed last month will help
to correct that.
Board reinstates Source4Teachers contract
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
The Board of Education held an emer-
gency meeting to discuss a temporary solu-
tion for substitute staff placement, Mon-
day, July 30. The board decided to bring
Source4Teacher back for another year.
After discussing the possibility of legal
issues and an unreasonable amount of
time left to find a suitable replacement
method, the board rescinded its previous
vote and reinstated a contract with
Source4Teachers.
Board members Andrew Walter, Paul
Marino, Ginny Murphy, Chet Nawoyski
and Board of Education President Steve
Altamuro voted in favor of re-establishing
the contract. Board members Josh
Aronovitch, Jim Murphy and Kurt Snyder
voted against the decision.
In light of the current summer school
session, the cancelation of the
Source4Teachers contract would cause
summer school to come to an end, officials
said.
There are Source4Teachers employees
currently working in the school system. If
they are pulled from the schools, it will
jeopardize the summer school children as
well as the students in the fall, Altamuro
said.
If we dont extend the contract, those
teachers have to stop working, Altamuro
said.
Altamuro presented the board with
three possible options. To wait 90 to 120
days and bring back the in-house system,
consider going back to Source4Teachers or
do nothing.
Based on the fact that summer school
would have to close, doing nothing is not
going to be an option,Altamuro said.
On top of the summer school program
issue, the board recognized that there is
not enough time to start over with the in-
house program.
Altamuro also said that the fingerprint-
ing process for the in-house system would
cause a further delay in finding a success-
ful solution to replace Source4Teachers.
Altamuro said that it would be a tough
risk to take on when we have an option that
has no overhead cost.
Business Administrator Peg Meehan,
said the total amount of savings with a
long-term rate of $150 per diem, the dis-
trict should expect to save approximately
$97,000 in a year. That savings does not take
into consideration the overhead costs such
as pensions and benefits.
Murphy, who voted against the renewal,
said education is being sacrificed by using
Source4Teachers.

No bad substitutes identified
We had control over who
those teachers are when they
come to the schools, Murphy
said.
During last weeks meeting,
district substitutes and residents
argued that the Source4Teachers
method was bringing in inexperi-
enced substitutes. Many who ex-
pressed their concern with both
the Source4Teacher method and
the in-house system, complained
about bad substitutes, but
failed to mention names at the re-
quest of Altamuro.
Not one person could identify
those bad teachers that came
from Source. Its hard to believe
the stories are true if no one iden-
tified those teachers, said Alta-
muro. When we did the in-house
system we had bad substitutes
too.
Five out of three board mem-
bers agreed that Source4teachers
is more effective and cost effi-
cient.
Superintendent Bob Gold-
schmidt said the money saved by
using Source4Teachers would
benefit the district.
If we save $100,000, its
$100,000 more in programs or tax
relief, Goldschmidt said.
