Berry Trapezoid

by Linda Wilgus

I love chandelier earrings, but often find that the larger styles are too heavy for my ears. The solution came to me one morning when I woke up with the idea of knitting a pair of earrings. After some experimenting I came up with these Berry Trapezoids. The simple lace pattern fits the chandelier shape and the three bobbles act as gem stones. I added a little luxury by working with a second strand of a mohair and silk yarn throughout the pattern, but you can use any yarn you like of course! These earrings are a great project for whatever piece of scrap yarn you have lying around, that is simply too

pretty to throw away but much too small to do anything with. They are great for every day wear, but could also be a funky accessory on a night out. The size of the earrings can be changed by using a different weight yarn or needle size. Varying colors and fiber content can change the look as well, allowing for the creation of several pairs that are each unique. The possibilities are endless! SIZE Not applicable MEASUREMENTS OF ONE EARRING Width: 1.5 inches at the widest point Length: 2.5 inches at the widest point If you would like the earrings to be larger or smaller, you can use a different yarn and/or needle size. MATERIALS USED FOR EARRINGS SHOWN IN PICTURES [MC] Alessandra Filati Lupo di Mare [100% cotton; 136 yd/125 m per 50g skein]; color: #688; 1 skein [CC1 - worked double stranded with MC] Rowan Kidsilk Spray [70% super kid mohair, 30% silk; 229 yd/210 m per 25g skein]; color: Vino; 1 skein [CC2] Alessandra Filati Lupo di Mare [100% cotton; 136 yd/125 m per 50g skein]; color: #659; 1 skein MATERIALS NEEDED Scrap yarn in two different colors that knits up to the same gauge as the yarn used for the earrings shown in the pictures. Plus, if desired, a few yards of mohair and silk yarn. 1 set(s) US #2/2.75mm straight needles or size needed to obtain gauge 2 wire earring hooks GAUGE 6-7 sts/9-10 rows = 1" in stockinette stitch PATTERN NOTES The pattern is worked using two colors that alternate (one for the main part and one for the bobbles) and a third one that is used double-stranded throughout. Start out with MC and CC1 double stranded. When changing to CC2, keep using CC1, now double stranded with CC2. When switching back to MC, keep using CC1 double stranded, and so on. MB = Make Bobble. Using CC2 (and still using CC1): KFB, repeat once more, 1 stitch has become 4 stitches. Turn. Knit these 4 stitches. Turn. Knit 4 stitches again. One by one, pass every stitch over the first one.
