Design in India is getting close to the tipping point. Fifty years after the first design institute was set up, there is today, a sudden surge in design awareness that is manifesting itself into the mainstream media. There are design forums, get-togethers, design festivals, design summits and design presentations, which are slowly but significantly dotting the landscape. Government of India is investing in design to improve systems and products. Innovation is the new mantra in corporate communications. New institutions are cropping up and design education is getting revamped at all levels. Design profession itself is going through a change. While some disciplines like Digital Design is going the technology route, Product design is going back to the basics of grass-root level innovation. While some designers are getting into a specialist role, others are breaking barriers and are becoming influential design thinkers. There is room for all kinds of designers, but most importantly, there is room for a new design institute to cater to this surging demand. FORDEE has had the advantage of starting afresh. Our curriculum is current and contemporary. Our faculty members are hand-picked and are from premier design institutions. Our disciplines are fresh and current. Our facilities will be top-notch. All students will be admitted into the first year of studies called the Common Foundation Programme. The students are primed in skills, knowledge and creativity to enable them to take an informed decision to choose a specialization that suits their taste and temperament. Courses on skills include drawing, material manipulation, workshop practices photography and software. Students are also introduced to universal design concepts, theory and practises. They are also exposed to art, architecture, photography and cultural studies, so as to be ready to choose a career in a creative design discipline.

A Balasubramaniam As the Academic Director, A Balasubramaniam has given vision to the entire design programme at FORDEE. An early graduate of NID, Ahmedabad, he comes with over 25 years of experience in practicing as a Product Design consultant and an educator. He has been involved in teaching at all the premier design institutes of India, like NID, NIFT, SPA and has also been a jury member for various student projects and professional competitions.

Anu Tomar Anu Tomar graduated in Lifestyle & Accessories Design from NIFT, Gandhinagar. She works as a design consultant to international organisations in India and the Middle East. She has traveled widely, all over Europe and other countries and she specializes in Jewellery design.

Shuchi Mathur An Industrial Designer from NID and an educator, Shuchi Mathur comes with professional experience in product design and innovation. She has also been involved in curriculum development with various design institutes, including NIFT, Delhi and NIFT, Rae Bareilly. She is putting together the Common Foundation Programme for FORDEE Institute of Design.

Sonal Verma Sonal Verma graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India as a Leather designer in 2007,after completing her bachelor in fashion and design. She did her masters degree under the European Design Labs program at the Instituto Europeo di design, Madrid, Spain. She will be driving the Textile Design & Fashion programme at FORDEE.

Admissions are open for the Common Foundation program commencing in July 2012. Students who have given their XII Board exams and are awaiting results are eligible to apply. Students have to download the form from the website and send it along with a2 passport size photographs and a cheque / DD of Rs 950/- in the name of Fordee Educational Trust to: FORDEE INSTITUTE OF DESIGN A 1/13, Freedom Fighters Colony, Neb Serai, IGNOU Road Near Saket Metro Station New Delhi 110068 Last date for receiving the filled up form is 4th June2012. Students will have to undertake an entrance examination for Creative ability and will also appear for an interview on 9th June 2012. Results of the chosen students will be announced on 12th June 2012. Course commences on 24th July 2012.
