INTRODUCTION
This Handbook was prepared by Standards Australia as a ready reference to identify standard commercial metal and alloy designations of overseas origin, to relate them to a source Standard and where possible to give their Australian counterparts in terms of chemical composition. The Handbook covers steel (wrought, cast and tool), cast iron, copper and copper alloys, aluminium and aluminium alloys, zinc and zinc alloys, and lead and lead alloys. For convenience, solders have been grouped under lead and lead alloys in Chapter 7. The designations listed represent those metals and alloys which have been standardized by the International Organization for Standardization, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the United States of America, Germany and Japan. The designations are not in themselves specifications, since they establish no requirements for form, condition, properties or quality. This information may be sought from the Standards listed in the Appendices, although it should be noted that the Standards listed are representative only and not necessarily a complete list of specifications applicable to a particular designation. Further information on designations and product forms is available in the Standards Australia Handbook, HB17, Metals and alloys Standard terminology and nomenclature.
