Preface
This Handbook contains supplementary information that may assist in the structural design of farm structures for storage of bulk materials. Unique circumstances exist for farm structures, in that these buildings typically have a low occupancy load, and they are remote in terms of location and the nature of the occupancies involved. General design requirements for design of farm structures with low human occupancy are covered by the AS/NZS 1170 Structural design actions series. This Handbook is intended to cover additional aspects of structural design of farm structures and does not include fire safety or health requirements. This Handbook was first developed as part of AS 28671986 Farm structuresGeneral requirements for structural design and was based on the Canadian Farm Building Code, 1983 (6th edition), issued by the Associate Committee on the National Building Code of Canada, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa. In addition, BS 55021978, Code of Practice for Design of Buildings and Structures for Agriculture, was also used in the preparation of AS 28671986. The information contained in AS 28671986 was superseded by information included in AS/NZS 1170.0:2002, however the information contained in the Appendices of the 1986 edition of AS 2867 was not included in AS/NZS 1170.0:2002 and has now been developed into this Handbook.

General
This Handbook sets out supplementary information for the assessment of loads on farm structures for storage of bulk materials. General design requirements for design of farm structures with low human occupancy are covered by the AS/NZS 1170, Structural design actions series. It is intended to cover additional aspects of structural design of farm structures and does not include other requirements such as fire safety and health.

2.1

General
This Section describes a basis for the calculation of loads on walls of above-ground silage bunkers that are vertical or have a slope not more than 10 from the vertical.

2.2

Basis for calculation

Calculation of loads on the walls of above-ground silage bunkers that are vertical or have a slope not more than 10 from the vertical should be based on (a) (b) a uniform horizontal load of 3.5 kN/m ; and a triangular shaped horizontal load of 3.5 kN/m , where z is the depth in metres below the rolled surface of the silage.
2 2

In addition, calculation of loads on walls of horizontal silos intended for packing by the use of tractors should be based on the action of two concentrated loads, both acting horizontally on an area 0.6 m 0.6 m, centred 0.6 m below the surface, with centroids 2 m apart along the wall, considered to be of short duration, and each of 3 kN (see Figure 2.1).
NOTE: The above requirements are based on packing by a wheeled tractor with a gross weight not exceeding 6 t, adequate drainage of effluent from the silage being provided and the moisture content of the grass not exceeding 80%. If the tractor is heavier and properties of silage are different from the above, higher design requirements may be applicable.
