Introduction Storytelling is an effective teaching and learning activity to help improve the standard of English among pupils. The storytelling activity/competition will be carried out at school, district/division, state and national levels. Storytelling is the act of telling a story in an entertaining, impressive or dramatic way. Telling is standing or sitting and using ones voice or sign language to present a story without reading from a book. Adding feeling or emotion is probably most important. Generally we remember the feeling of the event or imagine what our characters might be felling and then adjust our delivery accordingly.

We need to adjust our delivery about: Tone of voice Loudness Rhythm Facial expression Body language Movement Hand gestures

All audiences want to able to: Hear, follow and understand a story Enjoy putting their imagination to work Have fun experience some other strong feelings

Some audiences want to: Puzzle over what a story is about Enjoy a good metaphor or other creative word plays Be empowered Be reminded of their goodness Have their beliefs acknowledged and confirmed Feel like they belong Enjoy watching an artist at work

The practice Storytelling as an activity can be shortened to: Finding stories, Learning them, Trying them out and noticing audience feedback, Responding to the feedback by reviewing your stories and your performances, and Constantly refining your skills.

How to you pick which stories to tell? Well first of all, pick a story that makes you interested and curious about how its going to end Secondly, pick one that seems to flow off the pages of the book into your speaking voice-a well rounded oral story now a hard or literary story. Thirdly, pick a story, the philosophy of which, you can agree with, can be pleased with and proud of.

A good way to acquire some new skills is by listening to other storytellers. There is something to be learnt from every performer. What are they doing well? What did the audience like? What didnt work? The other thing is to develop good relationships with other storytellers. Tell other tellers what you like about their work and theyll start telling you as well. Take chances. Be generous.

Aim and objectives of programme

Objectives Primary-This programmes aims to develop story Dramatization skills in students to build appreciation for their own or prescribed stories. It also enable them to create their own stories and tell them in a Dramatic, imaginative and creative way. Synopsis of performance Primary- students will be trained in basic drama skills such as articulation and expression to bring their stories alive. They will also explore other vocal and movement skills such as elements of good storytelling. Dram skills such as improvisation and simple characterization will be introduce to enable students to extend and develop their own stories. They will be trained to tell their own or prescribed stories to their peers using simple presentational skills and techniques. Students will be encouraged to bring their own small props or costumes to enhance their storytelling.

At the end of the programme students will learn to/understand Primary- (1) Learn improvisation and role playing skills to bring their stories alive. (2) Know simple movement work to enhance their story. Use appropriate props and objects to enhance the dramatization of the stories.

Objectives of storytelling program

to envelop students in an experience of language used at its highest and most powerful level to empower students to express, validate and record ideas, beliefs, feelings and experiences by involving them as active participants in the creative process to help children access and elaborate dreams and memories to provoke delight, thoughtful response and feelings of self-worth to explore the collective experience of family, community and culture to find common ground and bridge the differences between individuals, nations and culture through the lens of the imagination to trace the source of our stories: from our lives to our literature and oral traditions to enhance the literacy process by supporting the acquisition of the skills necessary to express, receive and record ideas and experiences to complement the language arts program by coordinating the content delivery and process of storytelling with classroom curricula to illuminate the connection between words, memory and the senses to facilitate the give-and-take between oral and written expression by providing opportunity for students to record their stories in a variety of symbolic media including graphic, visual, plastic and dramatic to assist and encourage teachers to use their own experiences and gifts as storytellers to model effective and entertaining language and to understand how storytelling can serve as a powerful teaching tool

Aim of storytelling program The aim dont have to be grand and the process doesnt have to be overwhelming. But it does have to be thoughtful and appropriate to the proporsed activities. Increase the use of the libary children aged 7 to 12 years by 10% during the next 12 months. Increase the reading and writing skills by children aged 7 to 12 years by 10% during the next 12 months.

Duration of programme Duration per session: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Target group: Year 1 to year 6 student.

Report on implementation of programme Story-telling is easy to conduct is a very good learning experience for students. It can also cater for students of different abilities as they can choose stories that suit their own levels. Through story-telling, we hope students will become more interested in stories and in reading. Of course such interest needs to be constantly reinforced. But the story-telling activity will serve as a useful start.

Suitability Level: the whole school Time preparation: 1 month Activity-about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1hour 30minutes.

Organization structure The English Club is in charge of the organization of the competition. A storyCelling Competition Committee can be formed, consisting of a teacher and some senior form students. The major responsibilities of the Committee are: o Booking the school hall for the competition o Publicity o Preparing the rules and guidelines for adjudicators o Inviting judges o Training sessions on story-telling techniques o Arranging for technical support where possible o Hosting the competition Before the competition, about 4 students from the organizing committee are required to do the preparation work under the supervision of the teacher-incharge. About 5 students are needed during the competition: o 1 announcer o 2 students to help the contestants get ready o 2 students to liaise with teachers, technicians, etc.

Procedure Setting the date of the competition and booking the venue The English Club or the teacher-in-charge should set the date of the competition and book the school hall in advance, and inform the school technician responsible for sound and lighting facilities about the event. The organizing Committee About 6 weeks before the competition, the English Club members in charge of this function, or the teacher-in-charge will recruit some senior form student and form a Story-Telling Competition Organizing Committee. Publicity This can be done through posters and announcements. Circulars will be sent to the English teachers so that they can help promote the competition. The rules and information about the competition should be announced at the same time.

Rules and Regulations Contestants are to observe the following rules: Stories presented can be authentic, adapted or originally written. Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, colour, personalities, etc. Stories must be educational with moral values. Props, backdrops and sound effects are not allowed. Aids used during the presentation are considered part of the costume. If the aids are deliberately detached from the story teller, they will be considered as props and is an infringement. Time allocated to present the story is 5 minutes. The bell will be rung at the 5 minutes. No mark will be awarded thereafter. Each participant must come at least 30 minutes before the competition begins. Each participant must stay the competition venue until the competition ends and must remain silent when another participant is delivering his/her story, unless by any of the committees permission. Every communication device must be silent or turned off.
