Influenced by Marcel Breuers, Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe also followed the compatibility of the revolutionary material tubular steel which is reflected in his designs such as MR Chaise Lounge and MR Chair. Ludwig Miles Van Der Rohe was known using new industrial technologies that have become popular classics such as the Barcelona chair. Manufactured using materials Chrome on steel frame and combined with Leather cushions filled with PU-foam to give clean lines and elegant design. Like Ludwig mies van der rohe and many other designers during the early 20th century using new technology of tubular steel, Designer Alvar Aalto was different. Instead he made significant technical innovations using laminated materials such as birch and plywood. Example of his experiments of using bonding veneers together and moulding plywood that created Model No.41 chair. The chair is made from laminated solid birch frame. Birch is a very flexible and springy material. The seat is made from bent plywood. Both furniture designers are gigantic supporters of the modernism design movement by using principles less is more with no decorations and keeping the simplicity.

Joe Columbo was an artist & architect but in 1936 devoted himself to the industrial design. The designer drew inspiration from new discovered materials and based on futuristic creations. The universal chair is the first full scale chair to be injection moulded using ABS plastic. The chair has interchangeable legs of two heights and could be stacked into three. The designer created an armchair that is considered to be the first of its kind made of moulded plastic (fibreglass) and lined on the inside with individual leather cushions, named after his wife the Elda Chair. Armchair 4801/5 was crafted with molds and fitted the pieces of press plywood together without screws, nails, or glue. The American husband and wife designers Charles and Ray Eames created one of the major icons of modern design the Eames Lounge chair. The very stylish masculine design was created using high quality materials of rosewood veneer, moulded plywood seat shells with leather covered, foam filled cushions on a swivelled cast aluminium. The LCM (Lounge Chair Metal) is also another design they used moulded plywood, attached with rubber mounts and chrome plated tubular steel frame. All of these designers products followed the principle of modernism but and also post modernism. Their designs were made out of new age modern industrial materials and also follow no universal communication; example of this is the Eames Lounge chair which was created for the luxury end of the furniture market.

Ron Arad started out by being known for his one of a kind designer chairs created in metal workshops, Well tempered armchair is an example of this. The armchair is made out of 1mm thick high grade steel sheets that was laser cutted out and held together by wing nuts. In certain sections are crimped by a bending process at a 90 degree angle. Another metal chair is the Big Easy armchair which is made out of stainless steel, resin and carbon fibre. This design later developed an upholstered version called the Big E. In recent years Ron Arad started manufacturing with plastic and the rotational moulding design Ravioli was born. The design is similar to his Tel-Aviv Opera House which has a unique spatial quality. Philippe Starck has a international reputations leading him creating designs for leading companies worldwide. In the new age creating with eco consciousness he designed the Louis 20 chair. The chair using a blow moulding process consist a recyclable polypropylene body and front legs and combined with a recycled aluminium back legs and arms. Another famous chair designed by Philippe Starck was originally designed for Cafe Costes in Paris. The design consist of painted tubular steel frame with bent mahogany plywood which is foam upholstered with leather covered seat. The Miss Trip side chair is made out of polypropylene seat moulded seat, turned solid beechwood legs and the back is bent plywood with a beechwood veneer. The design was intended to be self contained unit and eradicate any extra packaging. Both designers follow Post Modernism. In their designs there are a rejection of prescriptive rules and principles, to achieve good design. Philippe Starck Louis 20 chair and Miss Trip side chair designs follows the Social Cause principle of new ideas of function which allow design to focus on areas of special needs such as the environment. Well tempered armchair and Big Easy armchair follow the idea of Function is Many Things. The design no longer focuses on form follows function. Instead, ideas about culture and identity are more important.

Blow molded polypropylene body Screws

Recycled cast Aluminum (back legs and arms Cast Alumuminum Bracket

Glides

The springy back section and the curvy hollow front legs are manufactured from one piece of blown polypropylene. The arm rests and back legs are made from recycled aluminium. It is held together with screws and can be disassembled very quickly by unscrewing he back legs from the body, making it easy to recycle the two materials separately. The aluminium frame is joined to the body by a bracket that enables the chair to be tilted on the back legs without causing damage.
