Hopelessness of War During the winter there is a lull in the offensive and Henry is encouraged to take leave, which he does. Henry is injured at the front when he is hit by a trench mortar. One of the men he is with is so badly injured he dies. Henry escapes from the carabinieri and deserts the army Retreating along a side road the ambulances are bogged. Henry shoots a sergeant who refuses to help get the vehicle out. Held up in a long retreat convoy Henry and the other ambulance drivers take a side road. The Italians are defeated at Caporetto and forced to retreat. Along with three others ambulance drivers Henry goes to the front at Caporetto. After the retreat Henry is taken by the carabinieri along with other officers for questioning. He witnesses other officers being shot. Henry is sent to a hospital in Milan to recover from his injury. When he is being transported from the front a fellow passenger dies from a haemorrhage. Henry and the other ambulance drivers finish the retreat on foot. One is shot and dies on the way. Another deserts. the ridiculousness of carrying a pistol at all came over me p28 The whole body thing is crazy p188 It did not have anything to do with me. Love and Grief Catherine falls pregnant. A relationship starts between Henry and Catherine. The relationship between Catherine and Henry intensifies Henry finds Catherine at Stresa Police come to Stresa to arrest Henry for deserting. In the middle of the night he escapes with Catherine to Switzerland. Catherine is sent to the same hospital in Milan where Henry is. Henry meets Catherine Barkley. Henry and Catherine live apparently happily for several months in Switzerland in a house on the side of a lake.
