ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: A night after celebrating manager Dennis Holmbergs 1,300th career victory, the Bluefield Blue Jays could not muster much offense against
Christian Binford and the Burlington Royals, falling 7-2 on Saturday at Bowen Field. Bubba Starling knocked a two-run homer and Alex Hudak drove in three runs. Santiago Nessy
homered in defeat. Binford and Blue Jays starter Kevin Comer swapped zeroes for the first third of the game before Fred Fords RBI double and Hudaks RBI single handed the
Royals a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Starling rocketed a two-run home run in the fifth to double the Burlington advantage. Comer (L, 3-3) allowed four runs on seven hits in five
innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. That would be plenty of support for Binford (W, 2-1), who did not allow a hit until Nessys leadoff blast in the bottom of the fifth.
The right-hander went seven innings and only allowed two other hits, a Jacob Anderson triple in the fifth and Dickie Joe Thons seventh-inning infield single. Binford struck out
eight and did not walk anyone. Griffin Murphy pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for the Jays in another outstanding appearance. The southpaw struck out three and has not
allowed an earned run in his last 18.2 innings over eight games. Burlington tacked on three runs in the eighth against Brandon Dorsett, who entered the game with a 0.79 ERA. That
number jumped by more than a run, but still sits at a stellar 1.82. Down 7-1, Bluefield scratched a run across in the eighth against closer Johnny Walter when Christian Lopes sent
home Emilio Guerrero with an RBI groundout. Guerrero led off the frame with his first hit for the Baby Jays since his call-up from the Gulf Coast League. Lopes went 0-for-4 as his
Bluefield season-high nine-game hitting streak was snapped.
VS. THE ROYALS: Bluefield won the first two head-to-head games in Burlington this season, but the Royals have won the last three games, all in the last at bat. On July 7
and 8, Burlington won back-to-back games in which the Jays were one strike away from the win. The Royals struggled last year to a 24-44 finish in 2011 and the Jays feasted on
Burlington throughout that summer, going 7-2 in the season series.
GABRYSZWSKI: The 19-year-old righty Jeremy Gabryszwski is coming off a game in Princeton on Tuesday in which he gave up three runs in five innings. His 2.77 ERA
and 1.05 WHIP both rank sixth in the league despite having a K/9 of 4.15 that is the second-lowest in the circuit, thanks in part to his 0.69 BB/9 (2nd in the league). Gabby has
not issued a free pass in 24 and two-thirds innings. The Crosby, Texas native was taken in the second round of last years draft, splitting time between the Gulf Coast League and
Bluefield. After four and one-third scoreless innings in three GCL games, Gabryszwski moved up to the Appy League on August 29, turning in a shutout inning of relief at Danville.
He relieved twice in the postseason for the Jays, allowing two runs in four and two-thirds innings. A graduate of Crosby High School, he had committed to play college ball at Lamar
before signing with Toronto.
CARAMO: Right-hander Yender Caramo goes for Burlington tonight and like Gabryszwski, hes had success because of a very low walk rate. Caramo has the fourth-best
walks per nine IP (0.78) and WHIP (1.00) in the Appy League. On Tuesday in Danville, he held the Braves to two runs on five hits in five innings. On July 8 at home against the Blue
Jays, he gave up four runs and six hits in four and two-thirds innings. He was on the hook for the loss before the Royals came back and pulled out a walk-off win. The 20-year-old
native of Venezuela signed with the Royals in 2010 and was named the Dominican Summer League Royals Pitcher of the Year in 2011 after leading the league with ten wins and a
1.20 ERA in 67.2 innings.
NINE? NEIN!: Second baseman Christian Lopes went 0-for-4 last night, ending his hitting streak at nine games. The stretch set a new Bluefield season high, passing Nico
Taylors eight-gamer from June 29 to July 7. The 2011 seventh-round pick from Huntington Beach, CA is batted .400 (14-35) during the run, with six doubles, two triples, seven
runs batted in and ten runs scored. He ranks third in the league in doubles with 15 and his 22 extra base hits are the fifth-most in the circuit. The Jays longest hitting streak last
year belonged to outfielder Chris Hawkins, who hit safely in 14 straight games from July 2 to July 16.
MILESTONE VICTORY: Friday nights victory was the 1,300th career win for Blue Jays manager Dennis Holmberg. Over 25 seasons as a minor league skipper, he has a
career record of 1,300-1,209 (.519). He managed his 2,500th professional game last Thursday. After eight seasons as a 3B/OF in the Milwaukee system he began his managerial
career at age 25 in 1977 with the Newark Co-Pilots, the Brewers farm team in the New York-Penn League. He joined the Blue Jays in 1978 as a minor league instructor and has
been with the organization ever since. He has spent 24 seasons as a manager and eight as a coach in the Toronto system. He also spent the 1994 and 1995 seasons as the bullpen
coach for the big league club. Holmberg has piloted ten playoff teams, including last years Appy League runner-up in Bluefield. It was Bluefields first postseason trip since 2002.
From 2002-07 his Auburn Doubledays made six straight postseasons, including a New York-Penn League championship run in 07.
