Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama fight against corruption claimed another big scalp last week when the last democratically elected Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, was jailed for a year on nine charges. Security was beefed up around the capital Suva last Friday for the sentencing by Justice Priyantha Fernando. The court buildings in the capital were roped off and local media report a high police presence. Security was increased after a big turnout of people at the court on Tuesday because police said they wanted the public to refrain from unwarranted actions. The sentence knocks Qarase out of Fiji's 2014 elections. In Auckland, Prime Minister John Key said it was still possible for Fiji to hold democracy-restoring elections in 2014, even though one of the principle politicians was locked up in jail. Qarase's jailing follows the move by New Zealand and Australia last week to ease sanctions against the regime which overthrew Qarase in a military coup in 2006. Key said they eased the sanctions to encourage Fiji toward elections. "We have been trying to take some baby steps forward toward normalising the rela-

A step closer to holding hands again

Thawing of relations was the order of the day in Auckland last week as New Zealand eased restrictions against Fijis interim regime. The occasion was the commissioning of the Harish Lodhia as Fijis first Honorary Consul in Auckland and chief guest was none other than the Fijian Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. I therefore wish to thank the New Zealand Government for approving the establishment of a Consulate in Auckland and Mr Lodhias appointment as Honorary Consul, Ratu Inoke told attendees at the commissioning at Tulja Centre on Stoddard Rd, Mt Roskill. Ratu Inoke and other Fiji Government officials have previously been barred from travelling to New Zealand or Australia. Ratu Inoke also met NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCully in Auckland and later travelled across the Tasman to meet his Australian counterpart, Bob Carr. The idea of appointing an Honorary Consul in Auckland has been mooted for some time. Auckland is where most Fijians in New Zealand live, Ratu Inoke said. Ladies and Gentlemen, the appointment of Fijis first Honorary Consul in New Zealand is an important milestone in Fijis foreign relations and is part of our commitment to expanding our diplomatic network, Ratu Inoke said. In the last 18 months, four new diplomatic missions were opened in Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil and most recently in South Korea. Another mission is being set up in Abu Dhabi and will open next month, bringing the total number of Fijian embassies abroad to 16. In addition,there are three trade commissions in Shanghai, Taipei and Los Angeles and a consulate in Sydney. A number of honorary consulates have also been established to 2014 under a new electoral system. It will be the first time in Fijis history that its citizens will vote without being racially segregated. The eligible voting age is also reduced from 21 to 18 years. Electronic Voter Registration is currently under way and attracting very good response. In the preparation for the new Constitution and the elections, our diplomatic relations have helped in resourcing the required processes. On behalf of my government, I say vinaka vakalevu to the New Zealand Government for its generous contribution to the Constitutional Commission and for providing technical help towards the election, Ratu Inoke said. I congratulate Harish Lodhia on his appointment as Fijis Honorary Consul in Auckland. His appointment is an indication of the Governments trust, faith and confidence in one of its own sons to represent its interests in Auckland and wish him every success in this role. Mr Lodhia told the gathering that he looked forward to strengthening bilateral relations between New Zealand and Fiji. This is a critical time for Fiji, both in terms of its economic and political challenges and its international obligations as a nation. As a small country in the South Pacific, Fiji and her people look forward for better neighbourly relations, closer economic and commercial ties and improved people-to-people contacts, Mr Lodhia said. This appointment will enable me to learn diplomacy, ways and means of fostering ties between the two countries, enhance the value of the historic relationship between Fiji and New Zealand. I would also have opportunities to interact with all of you, and gain from your expertise and experience.

New parent category process

The new policy came into effect on 30 July 2012. As we know, the new parent category policy have two tiers with separate requirements applying to each. Applicants that meet the tier one criteria will be given priority. All applicants must meet the general requirements of family relationship (with their sponsor), and being of good health and character. Tier one People applying under tier one must meet the following requirements: They must have either: l a guaranteed life-time minimum income of $27,203 per annum for a single person or $39,890 per annum for a couple, or l minimum settlement funds of $500,000 which they bring to New Zealand, or l a sponsoring adult child who has an income of at least $65,000 per annum or $90,000 per annum when combined with the sponsors partners income, and l they must not have any dependent children, and l they must meet at least two competencies of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Level 4.0, meet an equivalent requirement or pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages tuition at a cost of $1,735. Tier two People applying under tier two must meet all of the following requirements: l They must have a sponsoring adult child who has an income of at least $33,675 per annum. l If the applicants have other adult children, the children must all live lawfully and permanently outside the country in which the parents live. l They must not have any dependent children. l They must meet at least two competencies of IELTS Level 4.0, meet an equivalent requirement or pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages tuition at a cost of $1,735. EXISTING APPLICATIONS However, there were applications submitted to Immigration New Zealand before 30th July 2012. With these existing applications, If they meet Tier 1 requirements they can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). If the applicants have received an Invitation to Apply for Residence and they later apply under Tier 1, the old application will be lapsed and the application fee will be waived by Immigration New Zealand. If they meet Tier 2 requirements, then they need to apply under Tier 2 and the application fee will be not waived. The applicants need to fill the EOI form and send the form to Immigration. When applying under Tier 1 or Tier 2, the applicants who have submitted their medical and PCC previously may be considered valid by Immigration. All the EOIs submitted will be drawn from the pool four times in one year i.e. after every three months. So the draw will be in the months of February, May, August and November. EOIs will be drawn in the order in which they were accepted i.e. according to the date they are accepted by the Immigration.

Immigration will select around 600 applications per draw. The priority will be given to Tier 1 EOIs. The remaining place will be filled with the existing applications (applications which were applied earlier and are under process) from the queue. When the queue is gone then the Tier 2 EOIs will fill the rest of the places.

Q: What would you to add in conclusion? A: In summary, NZ companies wanting to do business with India can have direct access to the likes of FICCI, CII, PHD Chamber of Commerce, ASSOCHAM and other similar organizations and through them to its members. The NZ High Commission in Delhi and Consul General Office in Mumbai are also very keen to assist NZ Companies. We have the Indian High Commission, MFAT, NZTE, and INZBC here in NZ who would be of assistance to NZ Companies too. I would say THINK INDIA! THINK LONG-TERM- which was the theme of the recent ANZ - India New Zealand Business Forum on India. India is one of the oldest countries in the World - evidences goes back to 1000 of years and it had so many empires and rulers .Today, it is a very powerful economic country of 1.3 billion people a vibrant democratic country with the Executive, Parliament, Judiciary and free media. Most sectors, industry, services and the whos who of the Global Corporates are having their presence in India. You cannot go wrong, do your due diligence. Dont be in a terrible rush stay there.

NZ-India: working towards mutual benefit

Anthony Wenceslaus, chair of the India-New Zealand Business Council, recently visited India on a trade mission to strengthen even closer relations between India and New Zealand. Mr Wenceslaus talks to Indian Weekender about the success of his mission: Q: On your recent personal overseas business visit including India you had taken time in your pursuit to promote Trade and Business between India and New Zealand. What would be the highlights? A: The New Zealand High Commissioner in India Ms Jan Henderson had kindly hosted a luncheon meeting in her residence where the representatives of FICCI, CII, PHD Chamber of Commerce and ASSSOCHAM were invited. Ms Henderson was away due to prior commitment but Wendy Matthews, Deputy High Commissioner, and Gareth Pidgeon, Second Secretary, were present at the meeting. GENERAL POINTS INZBC, FICCI and CII are all working towards the same vision of a closer trade and business relationship between NZ and India. I had mentioned about my meeting with Indias Lead Negotiator for the FTA and the importance of concluding the negotiations, but it was also important that businesses develop their own links too. INZBC and FICC/CII had had good interaction during the PMs visit, but needed to think about what they could do to make their engagement more regular and consistent. Everyone agreed there was much potential to grow the business relationship, but to do that more continuous dialogue and engagement would be required. There was agreement about a problem of perception. Indian business stakeholders felt NZ was too far away to do business with. More contact was needed to break this kind of perception. CII/FICCI noted the need to move beyond Delhi and Mumbai and look at business opportunities in Tier 2/3 cities. I had asked that INZBCs Indian counterparts notify INZBC if there are any businesspeople who need information on doing business in NZ. SPECIfIC POINTS There was scope for co-operation in the agricultural sector. E.g. India could learn from NZ on apples post-harvest management. CII was working on facilitating more visits in this area and was happy to assist in other sectors too. Face-to-face interaction was important. CII was also happy to facilitate meetings between industry stakeholders, and to disseminate information among its network. CII, FICCI and PHD Chamber agreed we should pursue sector-focused small delegation visits between NZ and India. It was best to start with small projects to test what is feasible, before moving onto bigger projects. PHD Chamber Secretary General noted she was looking at putting together a delegation to go to NZ in November - probably in the Diary/ Agritech fields. FICCI (Asst Sec Gen) suggested exploring initiatives and capacity building for women entrepreneurs. INZBC and its Indian counterpart organisations agreed to look for opportunities to hold a Joint Business Council meeting on the side-lines of a future ministerial visit. OTHER ISSUES There was some discussion about possibilities for co-operation in the services sector. I had noted NZ has a high quality education sector. NZs model of childcare may be of interest to India. There was already cooperation in the health sector. Deputy High Commissioner Wendy Matthews added that Indian businesses are engaged in NZ in the IT and financial sectors. In Mumbai I had met Arvind Pradhan, Director General of Indian Merchants Chamber, and he was keen to establish a link to strengthen the business ties between India and NZ. The Carnival comes to life

The Auckland Carnival Events Incorporated Society (A.C.E) had its initial launch dinner at Jewel of India last Friday night. The dinner event, held in the authentic Mission Bay restaurant, was to acknowledge key supporters and committee members of the organisation. An honourable thank you was given to Helen Amituana'i of Mighty River Power by Luke Blincoe (GM of Mighty River Powers New Retail Division) and Gary Holmes of the Glen Innes Business Association, both avid supporters who helped to make the Glen Innes Carnival such a success last year. West looks forward to first Mandir with Community Centre

Saturday, July 21, 2012 would be carved out as a historic day for West Auckland which saw the site prayers or Bhumi Pooja for Sri Ram Mandir and Community Centre, witnessed by some 500 people. Shri Ram Mandir Charitable Trust (SRMCT Trust) is going to build a community centre and a place of worship for people of Hindu religion in West Auckland. This is the only project of this type for Henderson area. The community centre is located at 11 Brick St (off Swanson Rd). The event also saw the revival traditional Vastu Shastra which is the science of construction and architecture. In this traditional rite carried out for temples, Bhumi (earth) Pooja or blessing is done for purification of mother earth. In addition, blessings of two other deities associated with stability of Bhumi (earth) were sought. The first one is Ananta Shesha (Serpent) or endless Shesha which is said to hold the universe on its hood. The other deity is the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu which is Kurma (turtle) incarnation which gives stability to earth according to Hindu mythology. Prayers were led by the head priest Guruji Nand Lal Shastri, with Mr and Mrs Dhani Ram as head Yajmaan or representative of people. As part of the tradition, some 350 bricks, donated with $101 each and stamped with Shri Ram, were placed and buried in the foundation of the temple. The collection on the day amounted to about $35,000. A set of Trustees who are all professionals in their own right are custodians of Shri Ram Mandir Charitable Trust which is headed by a well known community leader, businessman and Chartered Accountant, Pravin Kumar of Lotus Group of Companies. Other trustees are Auckland University Senior Lecturer, Pundit Rajnish Sharma, Barrister and Solicitor and former Fiji parliamentarian Giyannendra Prasad, businessman and Chartered Accountant Salendra Kumar, and a community worker, former Fiji school teacher, parliamentarian and trade unionist Master Shiu Charan. Acquiring a 2366sqm land from funds donated by one of the trustees, the Trust ventured to build a three level building containing Mandir (temple with hall) and Community Centre with hall with essential amenities. Chairman of trustees Pravin Kumar said that the objectives, among others were to provide a place of worship for all Hindus and promote and practice the ideals of Hinduism through worship. The project also extends far beyond that and encompasses the activities of a community centre as well. In this way we will also look at wider social issues while providing essential services to the community to address its Spiritual, Social, and Cultural needs. The Trust will also represent the Hindu community on all cultural and religious issues, he said. Explaining the project in greater detail, Pravin said that there would be two dwellings onsite. The main dwelling will include a temple, hall, kitchen and dining areas being

attached to a secondary dwelling which will be the caretakers residence. The main dwelling will be 3 levels: the basement, the ground floor and the first floor. The basement hall, approximately of 441sqm, will be open area with parents room, toilet facilities, plant room and will also have some car parks. The Ground Floor, approximately of 688 sq m will house the function hall, dining and kitchen facilities. In addition to a stage and audio visual facilities, two additional rooms are provided to meet various ceremonial needs. The ground floor will have a capacity for 500 people. The top floor, with approximately 662sqm, will house the Prayer Hall and Temple. The murals of gods & goddess will be located on one side of the floor and behind this area there will be a small office and a small kitchen. Aucklands Local Boards will be able to access $10 million per annum for local transport projects after a decision made by the Strategy and Finance Committee last week. The boards will be able to use their share of the annual funding for any local transport capital works, provided they are technically deliverable and meet transport safety requirements. Although Auckland Transport will retain responsibility for the budget and delivery, it will be up to the Local Boards to decide how the funds would best be used, Mayor Len Brown said. The budget can be bundled and carried over into later years or by bringing future years of the budget forward. This ensures that Local Boards have the freedom to work on a number of smaller projects or bring the funds together for a larger project. This funding is flexible and that reflects both the faith we have in our Local Boards and the complexity and variety of projects across different parts of the region. Mr Brown advocated strongly for dedicated Local Board transport funding during the Long-term Plan process and welcomes the decision by the committee.

Mission issues urgent call New boundary will give for donations. Auckland room to grow
The Auckland City Mission is urgently calling for donations as this years Winter Appeal struggles to meet target. Every year the Mission holds a major fundraising appeal during winter to raise money for its services, which come under tremendous pressure as the colder weather sets in. With three weeks to go the appeal is $100,000 short of its target and the Mission is concerned that if more funds cannot be raised its services may be compromised. We rely heavily on our two major fundraising appeals Winter and Christmas to help ensure our services can continue to run 365 days a year. When an appeal doesnt meet its target we really feel the pinch. It means we have to either take the money from somewhere else in our already stretched budget, or cut back on the services we offer. The ones who suffer most are the families, children, the homeless and the elderly who desperately need our support now and into the future. Diane Robertson says the Mission is seeing more and more people coming for help. In the last 12 months social workers gave out over 10,235 food parcels, compared to 9,382 the previous year. Now more than ever, we need the Auckland community to get behind us. A new development boundary replacing the current metropolitan urban limits will be introduced to ensure Auckland has 30 years supply of green field land for residential and business growth as targeted in the Auckland Plan. The Auckland Plan Committee today endorsed a programme to investigate key greenfield areas of Auckland and consult widely with stakeholders, local boards and communities prior to defining a rural urban boundary (RUB) to be incorporated in the Unitary Plan. The RUB will define the maximum extent of urban development in 2040, enveloping all significant urban areas including the existing urban core, satellite towns, and rural and coastal towns. It will enable the potential to have up to 40

per cent of new dwellings outside the current metropolitan urban limits. Were looking at a 30 year timeframe and this work is vital to the success of the Auckland Plan in meeting the housing and business land needs of our rapidly growing city, said Councillor Penny Hulse, deputy mayor and committee chair. PM condemns US gurdwara shooting

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday expressed shock and sadness at the loss of lives and injuries, in a shooting incident at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin, USA which left seven people dead including the gunman. I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the shooting incident that has resulted in the loss of precious lives and injuries to devotees attending a prayer service at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin, USA," said Singh in a statement. "That this senseless act of violence should be targeted at a place of religious worship is particularly painful. I send my deepest condolences to the families that have been bereaved in this incident. Our thoughts are with them in this moment of their grief." "India stands in solidarity with all the peace-loving Americans who have condemned this violence. We welcome the U.S. President's statement on the tragic incident. "We hope that the authorities will reach out to the grieving families and ensure conditions that such violent acts are not repeated in the future, the PM said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has begun investigation into the shooting. At least seven people, including the shooter, were killed and several injured in the incident inside a Sikh gurdwara at Milwaukee area of Oak Creek in Wisconsin state of United States on Sunday. The white gunman, Wade Michael Page, aged 40, was shot dead by police but he killed six people and wounded three, including a cop, critically first. He started shooting during the Sunday services. The Embassy is seized of the situation and has been in touch with the National Security Council in Washington, D.C. "Our Consulate General in Chicago too has been in close touch with the local authorities to monitor the situation. An official has been deputed to visit the site to ascertain the situation on-the-spot," it said.

"We're treating this as a domestic terroristtype incident," Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said. FBI Milwaukee Special Agent in Charge Teresa Carlson in a statement said: "The FBI is working closely with the Oak Creek Police Department and other local and federal agencies to investigate todays shooting incident." "This remains an active investigation in its early stages. While the FBI is investigating whether this matter might be an act of domestic terrorism, no motive has been determined at this time," Carlson. "We know our community has been deeply impacted by this incident, and our thoughts are with those affected and particularly with the officer who was wounded in the line of duty to protect others. The gunman barged into the kitchen of the gurdwara in Milwaukee area and started firing. Women were also inside the kitchen then.

According to NBC News quoting officials, "the suspected gunman had no obvious connection to domestic terror or white supremacist groups and apparently was not on any list of suspected terrorists." He had an arrest record for minor offenses, it said quoting a federal official. Meanwhile, the US Mission in India also joined President Obama in expression of sympathy and condolences to the Sikh communities in the United States and India. "We are deeply saddened by the senseless loss of lives and injuries caused by the August 5 shooting at a Sikh Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to the victims and their families," a statement issued by the mission said. "An investigation into the incident has begun. Former Army chief V K Singh was seen sharing the stage with the Team Anna members on Friday. Meanwhile, Union Minster for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal on Friday slammed Team Anna members and called them 'hardcore politicians'. "These people are hardcore politicians," Sibal was quoted as saying to media. "They know very well what politics is. They have positioned themselves well," he said. Sibal welcomed the decision of Team Anna and said: "We must welcome their decision. Any team can come and face the people and contest elections." "Well, we all already knew that this is what they were interested in. They wanted to create this situation," he said. New Delhi: Supporters of social activist Anna Hazare stood divided in reaction to the veteran corruption crusader's move to start a political party, reports said Saturday. While some supporters hailed the decision as a logical given the government purportedly stonewalling their demands to crackdown decisively against corruption, others saw it as the end of a revolution. Some dejected Anna Hazare supporters at Navsari in Surat reportedly burnt posters of Anna and India Against Corruption (IAC), the group that Hazare leads. In Delhi, some unhappy IAC members showed their disapproval through their absence from the venue of Hazares hunger strike campaign that ended Friday, while some other volunteers returned their identity cards. Former Chief Justice Santosh Hegde, a key supporter of Hazares campaign, on Friday said he does not support Anna and his team floating a political party, but would campaign for candidates who identify themselves with his movement against corruption. "I don't support Anna Hazare and his team starting a political party. But I have heard Anna speaking on TV that he is neither forming a party nor contesting elections, but may support people wanting to contest elections whom he knows will help the cause of fight against corruption and bring about political change in the country," he said. Baby steps in the right direction

The mood swing in relations between New Zealand and its Pacific neighbour Fiji is noticeable. Once an outcast of the Pacific Forum family following the military takeover by Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama six years ago, Fiji is now being welcomed back with open arms as genuine signals of the desire to return to democratic rule is the island nation are now stronger than ever. Travel restrictions on officials associated with Bainimaramas military regime have been eased by New Zealand and moves are underway to mutually re-establish formal diplomatic ties in Suva and Wellington. Last Friday also saw commissioning of the Fijis Honorary Consul in Auckland a function attended by none other than the Fijian Foreign Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, who, after meeting his New Zealand counterpart in Auckland last week, travelled across the Tasman to meet up with his Australian counterpart. Australia, the Oceania regions greatest power, and New Zealand have now decided that Bainimarama, after slipping on his election pledges several times in the past few years, is now genuinely moving to hold democratic elections in 2014. Important steps in the right direction for all parties. Bainimarama is now well on the road to delivering what he had promised after his 2006 military coup against the democratically elected Government of Laisenia Qarase, who, last week, was jailed for a year after being found guilty on nine corruption charges. Voter registration is in full swing in Fiji and the five-member Constitution Review Commission has been sworn in to begin work on the new document for the new Government. A draft Constitution is expected to be ready for discussion by January 2013, with the final document scheduled to be in the hands of the President by 2013. Considering all is on schedule, it will be the first time in the countrys history that all its citizens will be voting as Fijians a commendable achievement where in the past the Fijian term has been used for the indigenous population only. For the minority Indian populace, this could mean a greater sense of belonging. A niggling thought remains, though: Will the new Constitution put end to recurring military coups and lasting peace since the first military takeover by Sitiveni Rabuka in 1987? Paid Parental Leave Childish Comment?

PoojA SuNdAr When I was going to start off this article by going slightly off topic and saying what a gorgeous weekend it was, perfect for an Olympics filled morning, but as I am not a qualified meteorologist, nor an athlete, I really cannot comment on the weather or its suitability for the Olympics. According to National MP Maggie Barrys logic, on Wednesday 25th August during a debate on parental leave, that makes perfect sense. It did not matter that she as has commented on clauses of the Treaty of Waitangi, graffiti, laws of the sea and building regulations while not being qualified in any way whatsoever; Barry found it perfectly acceptable to state that as Labour MP Jacinda Ardern had no children, she did not have the qualifications to comment on paid parental leave. Talk about double standards. The only thing that Barry would be qualified to comment on is when to water your plants and how to de-weed a garden given her long history in gardening shows on both radio and television. How many kids do you have? asked Barry of Ardern, returning to later add, dont be precious petal. The comments led to a torrent of responses on Twitter questioning Barrys logic and likening it other situations. The National MP has neither retracted her comments nor apologised for them. If I was careless and illogical enough to have made those comments the first thing I would have done is issued a statement apologising for them and stating that it was a careless comment; assuring the public, and especially those who voted for me, that this is not an incident that will occur again. This lack of response from her is really not helping her public profile and is only exaggerating her lack of practical political experience, focussing on her gardening television career. The comments made by Barry have overshadowed the real story, the first reading and passing, by one vote, of the Paid Parental Leave Bill. The Bill would increase paid parental leave by 12 weeks by four weeks a year over the next three years. The current leave is at 14 weeks and would extend to 26 under the Bill. It has the support of all the parties in Parliament other than National and Act to allow it to pass. Deputy Prime Minister, Bill English of the National Party, stated in April that the Bill would be vetoed by the Government as it would call for $500 million more in borrowing over the next governmental term. In line with her party, this is what Maggie Barry was arguing for in the Wednesday debate before she slipped up. Labour MP Sue Moroney, the proposer of the Bill, believes that National has intentionally overvalued the expenses involved in the extension of paid parental leave. She estimates that the plan would cost approximately $286 million more over the three year extension period and then by the third year, 26 weeks of paid parental leave would cost the government approximately $316 million a year. This would be a $145 million increase from the current 14 week system. Peter Dunne, leader of United Future, has expressed support for the Bill and said that in his belief Englishs verdict to veto was premature. English has also stated that the Government also plans to veto any other extensions in paid parental leave as well. Extending paid parental leave would put New Zealand in the higher side of the following list putting us between Norway and Estonia with 26 weeks. Our current system places at the bottom of the list on par with Germany, Japan and Malta. 52 weeks Croatia, Denmark, and Serbia 36 weeks Norway 20 weeks Estonia, Poland, and Russia 18 weeks Australia, Belarus, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine 16 weeks Austria, France, Luxembourg and Spain 14 weeks Germany, and Malta This list is surprisingly adverse to New Zealands generally well established high Human Development Index placing us 5th just below the United States and Netherlands. Pune: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday visited the blast sites in Pune and met police officials, days after the city was hit by four low-intensity explosions on Aug 1. Shinde, who took over as Home Minister on the same day after P Chidambaram was made Finance Minister, reportedly discussed on the security situations of the city with the police officials on Saturday. Four low-intensity bomb blasts in quick succession shook Pune on Wednesday night, leaving one person wounded, while a fifth device was defused. The blasts on Wednesday had come on the same day as a scheduled visit -- cancelled at the last minute -by Shinde. While the first three explosions took place within a one kilometre of the busy Junglee Maharaj Road, the fourth blast was reported from the Garware Chowk. A fifth bomb was defused near a McDonalds outlet in the city. While initially it was suspected to be an act of mischief, a splinter group of the Indian Mujahiddeen (IM) has now emerged as the prime suspect, but investigators are also probing other angles. The police has also prepared sketches of two suspects however they havent been released to the public just yet, media reports said. The investigating agencies have also reportedly approached mobile operators to help trace any suspicious calls made before or after the blasts in Pune on Aug 1. Meanwhile, the person injured in the blast, 34-year-old tailor Dayanand Patil who was initially considered a suspect after being wounded by the explosives that he was carrying, has been let go. In February 2010, a bomb explosion outside the popular German Bakery near Pune's famous Osho ashram left 17 people dead as arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani American, confessed his role in the terror strike.

Pakistani banks to open branches in India

Islamabad: In an attempt to normalise economic and trade relationship, Pakistan has allowed two banks to open branches in India, media reports said on Saturday. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Yasin Anwar told media that two Pakistani banks National Bank of Pakistan and United Bank Ltd were allowed to open branches and start operations in India. He said that the Reserve bank of India (RBI) has been informed on the matter. Pakistan's decision to allow its banks to operate in India was given after India earlier this week allowed the neighbouring nation to invest in all the sectors except defence, space and atomic energy. India and Pakistan have decided to increase the trade between the two nations to US$6 billion by 2014. The trade between the two neighbouring nations is currently worth more than US$2 billion.

30 feared dead in North India flash floods

Deharadun: More than 30 people were feared dead in flash floods that struck the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Ten people have died in Uttarakhand alone, officials said, and 38 others are missing after torrential rains triggered landslides and floods in the state. According to reports, three jawans of the fire brigade department died at Gangori area of Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. At least 38 people were missing in Uttarkashi, said officials, while unconfirmed reports put the figure at 53. Nineteen labourers of the UJVN Ltds Assi Ganga hydel project were missing after cloud burst occurred in Uttarkashi district, said local police. Several other people went missing in different areas of the district including Uttarkashi town, Gangori, Barkot and Dunda. Heavy rain triggered flash floods, landslides and cloudbursts disrupting normal life in the state. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has asked authorities to launch relief and rescue operation in various affected areas in the north Indian state. Rajesh Kumar District Magistrate in Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts. Flash floods and landslides have destroyed several houses besides stranding several pilgrims in the state. The Chardham Yatra to Gangotri and Yamunotri was suspended for the second day on Saturday. In Himachal Pradesh, flash floods hit Palchan as two bridges and a road which that connected Manali to Rohtang were washed away on Saturday night. A government school, an under construction hydro power project and a number of electricity pylons were also washed away in the floods. Police evacuated around 120 people from the area. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Kathua district was affected as water levels in the Ujh river rose. The met department predicted more rains in the next 24 hours in the region, forcing authorities to sound a flood alert. Over 20 people have had to be rescued so far while 90 families living near the Chenab have been evacuated.

Mere 21% of MBAs employable: Study

New Delhi: A nationwide study of marks secured by 2264 MBAs who sat for tests by recruiting companies found only that only 21% of them could make the grade. The previous study of 2007 by MeritTrac placed employability index at 25%.The students representing over 100 B-Schools beyond the Top25, were tested by MeritTrac on standardised tests in Verbal ability, Quantitative ability and Reasoning on behalf of recruiting companies. Examination of AICTE Approval Process Hand Book: 2012-13 reveals that the number of MBA seats in India has grown almost four fold--from 94704 in 2006-07 to 352571 in 2011-12resulting in a 5-year compounded annual growth rate of 30%. To benchmark the current state of employability of management graduates, MBAUniverse.com and MeritTrac teamed up to conduct the research and release top line findings ahead of the MBAUniverse.com organized Indian Management Conclave 2012, on August 9-10 in New Delhi. For purposes of this study, pre recruitment test scores of 2,264 candidates were analysed by MeritTrac to assess how they fared on the three tests in terms of the average percentage scores and passthrough rates. The pass-through rates were calculated based on the pre decided cut-off for each test. These cut-offs are at par with the average cut-off scores decided by companies in their recruitment exercises. The threshold cut-off scores used in Verbal ability, Quantitative ability and Reasoning were 45%, 35% and 40% respectively. Overall average percentage score obtained by MBAs in Verbal ability, Quantitative ability and Reasoning was 52.58%, 41.17% and 37.51% respectively. The total pass-through rate, which is an index of employability, at 21% mark leaves scope for improvement considering that organisations hire from this talent pool for strategic roles and this is the managerial pool that companies bank on. The results of 2012 employability report covering 2264 B-schools students from 29 cities are quite startling. This report clearly brings out the employability gaps across various competencies and highlights the need for scientific examinations and tests to align the candidate skills to employability metrics, said S Murlidhar, CEO and Director, MeritTrac Services. The MeritTrac MBAUniverse Employability Index study of MBAs will now be conducted once every two years. Questions are asked about the talent coming out of MBA colleges, and whether they create a workforce responsive to the needs of the economy like understanding of business and onthe-feet thinking. Pasadena, California: NASA's most advanced Mars rover Curiosity has landed on the Red Planet. The one-tonne rover, hanging by ropes from a rocket backpack, touched down onto Mars Sunday to end a 36-week flight and begin a two-year investigation. The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft that carried Curiosity succeeded in every step of the most complex landing ever attempted on Mars, including the final severing of the bridle cords and flyaway maneuver of the rocket backpack. "Today, the wheels of Curiosity have begun to blaze the trail for human footprints on Mars. Curiosity, the most sophisticated rover ever built, is now on the surface of the Red Planet, where it will seek to answer age-old questions about whether life ever existed on Mars -or if the planet can sustain life in the future," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "This is an amazing achievement, made possible by a team of scientists and engineers from around the world and led by the extraordinary men and women of NASA and our Jet Propulsion Laboratory. President Obama has laid out a bold vision for sending humans to Mars in the mid2030's, and today's landing marks a significant step toward achieving this goal."

NASA lands car-size rover beside Martian mountain

Curiosity landed at 10:32 p.m. PDT Aug. 5, (1:32 a.m. EDT Aug. 6) near the foot of a mountain three miles tall and 96 miles in diameter inside Gale Crater. During a nearly two-year prime mission, the rover will investigate whether the region ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life. "The Seven Minutes of Terror has turned into the Seven Minutes of Triumph," said NASA Associate Administrator for Science John Grunsfeld. "My immense joy in the success of this mission is matched only by overwhelming pride I feel for the women and men of the mission's team." Curiosity returned its first view of Mars, a wide-angle scene of rocky ground near the front of the rover. More images are anticipated in the next several days as the mission blends observations of the landing site with activities to configure the rover for work and check the performance of its instruments and mechanisms. "Our Curiosity is talking to us from the surface of Mars," said MSL Project Manager Peter Theisinger of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "The landing takes us past the most hazardous moments for this project, and begins a new and exciting mission to pursue its scientific objectives."

Confirmation of Curiosity's successful landing came in communications relayed by NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter and received by the Canberra, Australia, antenna station of NASA's Deep Space Network. Curiosity carries 10 science instruments with a total mass 15 times as large as the science payloads on the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Some of the tools are the first of their kind on Mars, such as a laser-firing instrument for checking elemental composition of rocks from a distance. The rover will use a drill and scoop at the end of its robotic arm to gather soil and powdered samples of rock interiors, then sieve and parcel out these samples into analytical laboratory instruments inside the rover. To handle this science toolkit, Curiosity is twice as long and five times as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity. The Gale Crater landing site places the rover within driving distance of layers of the crater's interior mountain. Observations from orbit have identified clay and sulfate minerals in the lower layers, indicating a wet history. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.

Bolt still the fastest man

London: Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt successfully defended his London Olympics men's 100 metres gold here on Sunday. Bolt clinched the gold medal by crossing the finishing line in Olympic-record 9.63 seconds. It is the second fastest time in history. Jamaica's Yohan Blake grabbed the silver medal by clocking 9.75 while USA's Justin Gatlin won bronze by timing 9.79. Blake equaled his personal best of 9.75 to finish second. Bolt had qualified for Sunday's semi-finals by clocking 10.09 seconds in the heats on Saturday.

London: A demoralised India continued with their dismal show and went down 1-4 against South Korea in their fourth group B league match of the ongoing London Olympics here on Sunday. India, in their last league match, will meet Belgium on Tuesday. After losing their inaugural match against Netherlands 2-3, India conceded 1-3 against New Zealand and then were routed by Germany 5-2 in their last outing. In spite of dominating the proceedings for quite some time India failed to live up to the expectation for failing to utilise the scoring chances while their defence failed to withstand the pressure towards the end of the game and conceding three goals within ten minutes. Belying the expectation that India would be able to put up a better show against the Koreans, India conceded an early goal when Lee Nam Yong put Korea in the lead converting a penalty corner in the 6th minute( 0-1). Stung by the reverse India went all out and drew level four minutes later through Dharamvir Singh who found the target in the 10th minute (1-1). Inspired with the leveller, India went into attack and forced some chances all of which proved abortive. Indian defence which after conceding the early goal, managed to keep the rival attackers at bay till 59th minute finally caved in ab surrendered the lead as Nam Hyun Woo converted the penalty corner eleven minutes before the hooter (1-2). Indians looked a demoralised and tired outfit after the goal and conceded two more during the rest of the period. Hyderabad: Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal received a heroic welcome as she reached India from London on Tuesday after winning the bronze medal in the women's singles event of the London Olympics. She promised to win more medals for the country in future. "I really hope to win many more medals for India," Saina said while addressing a press conference in Hyderabad. Saina said standing on the Olympics podium after winning the medal was a 'huge' feeling. "Nothing bigger than standing on the Olympic podium," Saina said. "When I was standing on podium, I started crying, I thought of all the hard work I have put in all these years," she said. Thanking her coach Pullela Gopichand and parents, she said: "I want to thank dad, mom and Gopi sir for their support." An emotional Gopichand said: "Thank you Saina, without this medal, my life would have been incomplete." Saina first reached New Delhi on Tuesday where large number of

fans were present to welcome the bronze medalist. Saina later reached Hyderabad, where she received a rousing welcome from her fans and wellwishers achievement. She gave India the maiden Olympic medal from badminton as she got the women's singles bronze medal in Olympic badminton after her opponent Xin Wang of China retired hurt here at the Wembley Arena on Saturday. A 5000 year old Q&A with the Lord of Death

The Indian spiritual traditions are replete with dialogues, Q&As and rhetoric on truth. Even in the great epic Mahabharata we find many accounts of reasoning and inquiry where application of dharma is discussed. The Yaksha Prashna in the Mahabharata is one such section where we find a famous Q&A (question and answer) session between Yama the Lord of death and the wise King Yudhistir. In this Q&A we find 123 pointed questions by Lord Yama in a rapid fire style to which the righteous Yudhistir answers in a crisp and insightful way covering many aspects of applied DHARMA. The story is set up at the end of twelve years of exile of the five brothers Pandavas in the forest in the great Mahabharata. The episode is in the book of the forest (Aranyaka parva) where Yama the Lord of Death and Justice comes in disguise as a Yaksha (a nature spirit) to test the mettle of the dharmic King-inexile Yudhistir. The test is quite rigorous and the situation is deadly. The episode brings out the core teachings of dharma which in the dharmic traditions is the Summum Bonum of all existence. This dialogue called the Yaksha Prashna (questions by a Yaksha) is quite popular and oft quoted to validate righteous actions. Why is Yaksha Prashna popular? The Q&A covers a wide range of aphorisms on rightful conduct, relationships, piety, duties, religiosity etc. The account is more like a Chief Justice of Supreme Court interviewing a brilliant practicing lawyer who has a reputation for righteous conduct and cause for justice. The Chief Justice here is Yama who presides as the God of Death who rules according to the principles of dharma. The dharma practitioner is King Yudhistir who has established himself as an embodiment of dharma with an unsullied reputation of being righteous to the core. This episode gives us insight into what dharma means and how it can be applied today. While the context story for this dialogue is quite interesting, the wisdom that comes out of the Q&A is the real reason for the story. To make the long story short When the five brothers (Pandavas) were living in the forest, a stag took away the fire making sticks from the sages home in the forest in its antlers. The saint requested the Pandavas to recover it. The Pandavas followed the hoof marks of the deer throughout the day and reached deep in the forest. Yudhistir the eldest of the Pandavas becomes tired and thirsty and wants some water. Sahadev the youngest brother volunteers spots a lake nearby. The lake was bare of any living beings except a crane. When Sahadev is about to drink water from the lake, the crane speaks, Oh Sahadev, the water of this lake is poisonous, if you drink it without answering my questions. Sahadev ignores, drinks the water and dies instantly. The three other brothers of Yudhistir do the same and die. Seeing his four brothers missing, Yudhistir comes in search and seeing his brothers dead by the lake he too tries to fetch the water for their last rites. The crane warns Yudhistir and so he agrees to answer the questions of the crane. Before asking the questions, the crane reveals itself as a Yaksha. All the questions asked by the Yaksha get satisfactorily answered by Yudhistir and the brothers get revived. Then the Yaksha reveals his true being as Yama the Lord of death. A sample of the rapid fire Q&As In the Yaksha Prashna, Yama asks Yudhishtir 120 odd questions and here is a selection of these Q&As. Some of the answers are not that straightforward and needs a Guru to explain the import of it all. Who makes the sun to rise and ascend in the skies? Who moves around the Sun? Who makes the sun set in the horizons? What is the true nature of the Sun and where is the sun established? Yudhishtir answers: Brahma makes the sun rise and ascend. The Gods perambulate about the Sun. The dharma sets the Sun. Truth is the actual Sun and the Sun is established in truth only. What instils divinity in Brahmanas? What is the quality of virtuosity in a Brahmana? What is the humanlike quality of a Brahmana? What is the conduct akin to a nonvirtuous person in a Brahmana? Yudhishtir replied: The self-study of the Vedas is divinity in a Brahmana. Penance is the quality like a virtuous person in a Brahmana. Death is human-like quality in a Brahmana. Criticising others is conduct in a Brahmana like a non-virtuous person. What is heavier than earth, higher than heavens, faster than the wind and more numerous than straws? Yudhishtir: Ones mother is heavier than the earth; ones father is higher than the mountains. The mind is faster than wind and our worries are more numerous than straws. Who is the friend of a traveller? Who is the friend of the householder? Who is the friend of one who is ill and one who is dying? Yudhishtir: The friend of a traveller is his companion. The friend of the householder is the wife. The physician is the friend of one who is sick and a dying mans friend is charity. What is that which, when renounced, makes one lovable? What is that which is renounced makes happy and wealthy? Yudhishtir: Pride, if renounced makes one lovable; by renouncing desire one becomes wealthy; and to renounce avarice is to obtain happiness. What enemy is invincible? What constitutes an incurable disease? What sort of man is noble and what sort is ignoble? Yudhishtir: Anger is the invincible enemy. Covetousness constitutes a disease that is incurable. He is noble who desires the well-being of all creatures, and he is ignoble who is without mercy. Who is truly happy? What is the greatest wonder? Yudhishtir: He who has no debts is truly happy. Day after day countless people die. Yet the livings wish to live forever. O Lord, what can be a greater wonder? Rajesh Khannas love feeling intimidated

Mumbai: Anita Advani, who reportedly had a long-standing live-in relationship with the late megastar Rajesh Khanna at his Bandra bungalow Aashirwad, is feeling intimidated. Surrounded by various controversies, Advani has been constantly under media glare since the megastars demise. Apart from not being allowed to board a vehicle during the mourning procession of Rajesh Khanna, the lady is alleged to have demanded a share in Aashirwad. There have also been reports of an altercation with Rajesh Khannas estranged wife Dimple Kapadia and son-in-law Akshay Kumar. Ms Advani has been feeling hounded by the media with lots of television channels having camped outside her current residence for more than a week. She has also been receiving hundreds of calls and messages from the press on her cell phone, asking her to clarify various unfounded allegations, her official spokesman Dale Bhagwagar said. camera as an actor in concerned, I am continuing with that in Dhoom 3. But my focus has now shifted slightly and I am concentrating on my production company (YRF Entertainment -YRFs Hollywood wing, based in Los Angeles). Tell us about your Hollywood projects. We have finished our first film (The Longest Week) and going for the production of our second film (Grace To Monaco) in September. So my time is spent mostly abroad and handling that. You have just started shooting for Dhoom 3? How it is going? I am totally excited. Its like a boy thing what we grown up wanting to do, that is, play with guns, do stunts on bikes and romance hot women. And thats exactly what Dhoom 3 is ... all Dhoom is. So for me, its superb going back and working again with Abhishek (Bachchan) and working first time with Aamir (Khan). I am sure its going to be an amazing experience and fun. Will you use your comic label to promote Dhoom 3? Dhoom 3 will come and we can do a separate book on that movie and that story itself. But thats not going to be the thought behind the comics. They will have new stories with new villains, new characters and new locations. Whatever it is, you will have something that you have not got in the films. I am not using Dhoom as a promotional tour for the movie. In fact, its exactly the reverse. I want to use the films as promotional tours for the comic books.

Dhoom 3 is a boy thing

Uday Chopra has launched his new label of comic books Yomics Not Just for Kids with the wish to revive the Indian comic industry. Sreya Basu catches up with the actor-director in Mumbai as he speaks about his new venture and Dhoom 3
How excited were you about comics as a kid? As a kid I had my passion for the comic book space. It used to be great fun and there used to be a lot of joy in it. This was my passion since childhood. Me and my friends like Abhishek Bachchan used to sit in my fathers (filmmaker Yash Chopra) garden and enact all his films and have our own characters. So that passion made you come up with Yomics? I was thinking about launching a comic title for four-five years. I first thought of creating a character out of Ali (his screen name in Dhoom and Dhoom: 2) and calling it Adventures of Ali. You see I had a lot to time those days and I sat down to write a script for it. Then I sat with a storyboard artist who used to work at YRF (Yash Raj Films, production house) and said, Lets create an impromptu comic book with the speech that bubbles at the moment. So we had a little bit of comic book going between us at that moment, after which I thought of finding artists and see if I can produce this comic. But at that time the costs (of production) were very prohibitive for whoever doing it. It was charging so much that Indians did not see it as a good business venture. So I just parked my thoughts, put the file (script) in drawers and forgot about it. What happened then? Then one day, this guy Gautam Thakker of Division 91 Studios Pvt. Ltd came into my office with a poster of an Ali designed in a comic book way. I asked him what is this. He said his company is trying to make comic books. Then I took out my old file and said, Here it is. Just take and do it. He said he loved it but wanted to start with Dhoom as he said, everybody loves the film. I agreed and thats how the idea literally got bornto start out a comic book, later make it a label and to come up with more titles. Do you think we have an audience for comics? Till 60s, 80s, 90s, there was a good industry for comic but now its not there any more. So I thought of using our properties, films, which people have already accepted and loved, to revive it. Like we have Dhoom and also Ek Tha Tiger, which is already showing a lot of interest, and hence thought of using them to create an audience or readers who are not here at the moment. My endeavour is to lure and entice the first batch of readers by this connection to films. So, isnt it risky? Yes it is. But we are trying to bring out something that does not have an industry or a readership at the moment but we hope that with our passion and excitement, we can create a space for comics. We will be using our movies to fuel that. Do you think people will want to read films in comic books? We are of course going to use the characters (from films) that people already know and love. But there will be absolutely new stories they have nothing to do with the film at all. Will there be superheroes in the comics? Fantastical superheroes? Why not? But has to be something homegrown. What are your expectations from Yomics? I am super excited about Yomics. I am putting out there in the world hoping it will find its audience, its attractions so that I can create more characters and more universes that people will like, something vastly different, experimental that they will find out-of-the-box. What are the titles you are releasing at the moment? We have with four major comic series including Dhoom, Hum Tum, Ek Tha Tiger and a brand new character Daya Prochu, which incidentally is an anagram of Uday Chopra, my name. I have written the scripts of two of the comic series including Dhoom and Daya Pronchu. The comics have been launched in English and Hindi and will be translated into regional languages as well. Tell us more about Daya Prochu. I created this character on Twitter just for fun and used to tweet in his name sometimes philosophical, sometimes funny, at time irreverent. But when people started liking it, I thought why not introduce this character, who is my alter ego, in the comic books. He is a child but does things which I could not do in school. Like? Like if someone tries to bully him, he can scold that person, something which I could do when I was in school. There is a Daya Prochu in all of us who wants to come out. Why dont we see in you films these days? As far as me being in front of the

INGREDIENTS
6cups- milk 75g- basmati rice 125g- sugar 1tsp- cardamom powder 20g- almonds sliced 2tsp- saffron dissolved in 2tbsp- warm milk 4tsp- ghee

METHOD
Heat ghee in a pan, add rice and fry until it begins to colour it will take 4-5 minutes. Keep it aside. Boil milk in a heavy bottom pan (heavy bottom pan will prevent the milk from burning at the bottom). Add rice to it. Bring it to a boil, stirring constantly (to ensure that the rice dose not stick). Reduce to low heat and simmer until the rice is cooked. Add sugar and continue to cook until reduces to a custard consistency and keep stirring. Add the remaining ingredients and stir for a minute. Serve hot with few sliced almonds on top.
