Testimonials:
Naval Air Systems Command / Chief of Naval Operations Preproduction Evaluation 2002
The wire rope lubrication system evaluated during the project appears to have significant potential for reducing material usage and waste disposal costs. Significant labor savings are possible due to the reduced labor required to perform cable cleaning and lubricating events. Of equal importance, the wire rope lubrication system is a safer alternative than the previous method used because it does not require personnel to place grease on their gloves and wipe the crane cable. The cost analysis showed a 10-year ROI of approximately $ 135,900.60 and a breakeven point of .41 years.

P2 AFLOAT Award Submittal, Commander, Naval Base Norfolk, Secretary of the Navy 1998
The old cable cleaning method employed solvents and hand scraping, with a wire brush to remove the old grease. Afterwards the new grease was applied by hand. This process was time consuming and dangerous. A wire rope lubrication system is now used that automatically removes the old grease and re-applies new grease simultaneously. This process has reduced work time from 6 man-hours to 30 minutes for 450 of cable, saving a total of 1,080 Hours annually at a savings of nearly $ 43,000. Ex.: Kirkpatrick Cable Lubricator, USS Arctic: 10-year cost savings: $ 652,000, Labor reduction: 75%, Breakeven Point: .1 year.

Chief of Naval Operations Pilot Ergonomics Program Evaluation 2000:

The manual process required 6 workers and 2 full days to complete the cleaning and lubrication of a set of crane cables. Utilizing the wire rope lubrication system the process required 3 workers for 4 hours. Annual Cost Savings: $ 366,356.48 Breakeven Point: 10.5 Days. United States Coast Guard Naval Engineering Manual Chapter 613: Diligent use of pressure wire rope lubrication systems can increase the service life of wire rope. Wire Rope pressure lubrication systems with a proven history of performance in Coast Guard applications include systems manufactured by The Kirkpatrick Group, Inc., Dallas, TX. All new United States Coast Guard Buoy and Construction Tenders have a Kirkpatrick Model SU35B as part of their standard equipment when they leave the ship yard.

General Description

Page 1

Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems are designed so that in only one application wire rope can have its surface and groove pattern scraped clean of product build-up and grit while at the same time new lubricant is uniformly applied to the newly cleaned surface and penetrates into any open spaces within the grooves and internal strands open to receive it. This is accomplished as the wire rope passes through a 100% pressurized immersion in the Seal Lubrication Chamber. Surface moisture trapped in the internal strands is displaced and replaced with the newly applied wire rope coating. Systems are functional with both low and high viscosity coatings. Each system comes complete with one diameter Seal and Scraper Plate Kit and one diameter and lay Groove Cleaner Kit, and all required components necessary to commence immediate operation. The customer must specify the diameter Seal and Groove Cleaner Kits required as part of their complete system components at the time they place their order. The user is responsible for providing the air source and enough lubricant to accomplish the task at hand. Recommended air pressure settings for various wire rope travel speeds in conjunction with lubricant consumption rates are provided in a detailed operating manual and Documentation CD included with each system. Additional wire rope diameters require (optional) corresponding diameter Seal and Scraper Plate Kits as well as Groove Cleaner Kits apart from that provided with the complete system. A heavy surface coating limits penetration of new product being applied to the wire rope. Therefore, Groove Cleaners are recommended in the event that the users wire rope has such a coating. All Seal and Scraper Plate Kits / Groove Cleaner Kits are easily interchangeable. The Seal Kits slip easily into corresponding configured sides of the Lubrication Collar while the Groove Cleaners snap directly into the matching groove pattern of the wire rope. Smooth Bore Groove / Surface Cleaners are available for non-spin, double armor or multi strand wire rope configurations. An optional Manual Stripper is also available allowing users the capability to surface clean the wire rope separate from the lubrication process. This allows for easy inspection of the wire rope to determine if it should be lubricated or taken out of service. An optional Digital Flow Meter is also available providing the user a means to keep track of their lubricant usage for specific applications.

Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems come in three basic configurations:

SECTION FOUR: SEAL AND SCRAPER PLATE DIAMETERS AVAILABLE (STANDARD, JUMBO, AND INTERNAL SPRAY CONFIGURATIONS)
Seal & Scraper Plate Kits are comprised of two specially formulated and designed polyurea halves and a four piece Scraper Plate Set. The two halved Seals are inserted in the corresponding configured Lubrication Collar Halves. The four Scraper Plates are attached to each end of the Lubrication Collar (two to each end). The Seals act to form a seal around the wire rope to be treated and the Scrapers act to scrape the wire rope outer strands of penetration limiting contaminants as the wire rope enters the Lubrication Collar / Seals. The Scrapers then evenly smooth the recently applied coating around the wire rope outer circumstance as it exits the Lubrication Collar. We now have tooling to provide Seals at 1MM increments through 4 (101MM). Call us for Part Numbers. SECTION FIVE: GROOVE CLEANER KITS:

Groove Cleaner Kits are provided in three configurations: Right Lay, Left Lay and Smooth Bore. Groove Cleaners act to clean the outer circumference as well as the wire rope groove pattern of contaminants that hinder the penetration of new coatings being applied inside the Seal Lubrication Chamber. Non-Spin and/or Double Armor wire ropes do not have or have little groove pattern to clean. Therefore, the Smooth Bore Groove Cleaners are offered to clean the outer circumference of these types of wire rope configurations. Right and Left Lay groove Cleaners available. All Groove Cleaners are 6-Strand unless otherwise noted.

MANUAL STRIPPER: The Manual Stripper provides a rotational base for the Groove Cleaners. This item allows the user the ability to surface strip a majority of their wire rope for inspection purposes apart from the lubrication process. It can either be tied off to allow the wire rope to pass through it or it can be pulled along the wire rope. A Centering (Alignment) Bushing with a center hole cut to the diameter of the wire rope is required to be inserted in the Manual Stripper to keep it centered. Each manual Stripper is provided with one diameter Centering Bushing. Additional diameters are priced separately.

Dynagard Blue
Dynagard Blue is an extreme pressure unleaded environmental wire rope lubricant blended for excellent resistance to softening under severe working conditions, water resistance, and its compatibility with all Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems in addition to manual hand application. Its slickness and viscosity allow it to stay alive with the wire rope as the strands move during load bearing operations. This attribute also allows it to continuously redistribute itself to cover any internal strand areas that may have been missed during the initial lubrication process. An unleaded extreme pressure additive provides exceptional protection against wear and shock loads, while additional additives enhance resistance to water wash-off, protection against fling off at high wire rope travel speeds, and long service in high temperature environments. Dynagard Blue has outstanding structural and chemical stability. It wont corrode steel and copper bearing alloys and is compatible with conventional seal materials. Aquatic toxicity tests on sensitive marine organisms performed by independent test laboratories have shown it to have over 25,000 PPM making it possibly the best LC-50 value of any wire rope lubricant marketed in the world. Dynagard LVL Wire Rope Dressing

Dynagard LVL is a highly tenacious adhesive wire rope dressing formulated for use in both Marine and Mining applications where a quickly penetrating product is required with the low fling off adhesive attributes of a much higher viscosity coating. This is especially important at high wire rope travel speeds where fling-off is more apt to occur after the initial application of product. Dynagard LVL penetrates the outer strands of wire rope and cable and is excellent in displacing moisture when used with the Kirkpatrick JUL Internal Spray Systems. This product is also excellent for Mine Friction Hoist applications where slippage is a safety concern. As the carrier solvent evaporates, a thin flexible film of lubricant is formed. This fluid film barrier prevents the incursion of moisture or dirt between the strands, and contains rust and corrosion inhibitors to prevent abrasive and corrosive wear. The fluid film barrier of the Dynagard LVL also protects against the formation of rust and prevents rust binding, which reduces cable flexibility and life; increasing friction wear between the wire strands. The barrier also offers protection against corrosion, preventing pitting of wire strands that can cause fatigue failure. The Dynagard LVL maintains optimal performance in both dry and high humidity/salt water environments. SECTION NINE

Customer Field Application Questionnaire

Customer Application Questionnaire

Page 17

Please answer the following to the best of your ability so that we can accurately provide you with a system that best suits your job requirements. __________________________________________________________________________ What are your wire rope diameters and lengths? What is the number of outer strands for each diameter and direction of lay? Example 3/4 (19mm) 6-strand right hand lay. Please also note if they are lang lay or long lay if you have that information as well.

What is the maximum and minimum wire rope travel speed for each rope? Describe the kind of work application each rope is being used for. Example: Crane Boom Hoist, Crane Load Line, Mine Vertical Hoist, Mooring Line How heavily coated is each wire rope from old coatings that have been applied or environmental contaminants. (This helps us determine whether Groove Cleaners will be beneficial). New wire ropes do not initially require the use of Groove Cleaners. What is your wire rope condition? Example: burrs, broken strands, rough with surface rust, smooth with no broken strands. How has your wire rope maintenance been performed up to this point? Example: By Hand, Spray, or Vat. Etc.) How often? How far will your work location be from your air source? What length and what diameter is your air line? What has been the viscosity of the wire rope coating you have been applying to this point? Example: Liquid, Molasses consistency, Gel, Peanut Butter consistency or soft grease. What is the Trade Name? What is the temperature range in your working environment during your wire rope maintenance procedure? Air Supply Required: Larger diameter (2 (51mm) and larger) 6-strand, 7-strand, 8-strand wire rope configurations require one of our Jumbo Systems. The air supply should therefore be at least 30 to 40 CFM for them to perform optimally. Most Plant or Shipboard air is adequate to run the Jumbo System Pump packages.

Standard Systems (Wire rope diameters to 1-7/8 (48mm)) can function with
compressors of 15 CFM or stronger capacity. Much depends on the wire rope travel speed that exists during the wire rope maintenance process.

Points to Remember Prior to Ordering:

Please review our catalog for exact part numbers and component descriptions/graphics. Complete systems are provided with all components required to begin immediate operation except for the air source and the lubricant to be used. All systems are provided with one diameter seal & scraper plate kit and one diameter and lay groove cleaner kit. The customer must specify which diameters and lays they require with the complete system. Additional diameter and lay wire ropes require matching seal and groove cleaner kits. These are optional and are in addition to the complete system price. Wire ropes should be micro-metered prior to ordering seal and/or groove cleaner kits. Some new wire ropes can be nominally larger than their rated diameters. Conversely, older wire ropes can be nominally smaller in diameter than their rated size. This can be especially true for hemp / sisal core ropes after they have been in service. We now offer Seal diameters in 1MM increments through 4 (101M) It is a good idea to document the lay pattern and number of outer strands of your wire rope prior to ordering groove cleaner kits, Lay Pattern defined: Right or Left Regular Lay, Right or Left Lang Lay, Right or Left Long Lay. Number of Outer Strands defined: 6-Strand, 7-Strand, 8-Strand, 12-Strand or NonRotational Multi Strand.
