Figure 6b 6. (a) Explain the following methods of reducing stress concentration: i. Drilled holes ii. Using large llet radius. (b) A shaft supported as a simple beam, 0.45 mm long, is made of AIS; 3120 steel. With the shaft rotating a steady load of 8000 N is applied midway between the bearings. The surfaces are ground. Indenite life is desired with a factor of safety of 1.6 based on endurance strength. What should be the minimum diameter of the shaft if there are no surface discontinuities? Endurance limit is 630MPa.Size factor is 0.85 and machine surface nish factor 0.87. [4+12] 7. (a) Derive an expression for the angle of diagonal tension. (b) Find the shear ow in each web of the beam shown in the gure 5b. Plot the distribution of axial load along each stiening member when P1 =20kN, P2 =15kN and P3 =10kN. All dimensions are in cm. [6+10]

Figure 5b 8. For the celluar section as shown in gure 3 A1 =20 mmx40mm, A2 =40 mmx40mm t1 =2 mm, t2 =1.5 mm, and t3 =2.5 mm If the torque on the sectionis 300 Nm, determine the maximum shear stress and the angle of twist per unit length. Assume G=30 GN/m2 .
