Waukesha County recently offered a glimpse of its eco-
nomic and business base during presentations on the upcom-
ing county budget.
Three presentations were held in July prior to the next
stage of the budget process, which will include a formal
budget introduced by County Executive Dan Vrakas and then
discussion by County Board committees before final approval
in November.
According to information from the county executives
office, the tax levy paid for 41 percent of government opera-
tions, with 23 percent coming from intergovernmental assis-
tance, 12 percent from service charges, 8 percent from debt
borrowing, 7 percent from investments while 8 percent is fund
balance.
Justice and safety operations account 39 percent of the
county levy while 25 percent is for humane services. The
remainder of the expenses covered debt service (13 percent),
public works (11 percent), parks (9 percent), capital (2 per-
cent), and general administration and non department
expenses (1 percent).
Last year the total county budget was $284.6 million. The
equalized tax rate for 2012 was $2.01 per $1,000 valua-
tion, a .33 percent increase from six years ago. The cost of
continuing current services the same as in current budget
would result in an additional $4.7 million in expenses.
According to information from the Wisconsin Taxpayers
Alliance, Waukesha County has the third lowest tax rate in the
state. Additional information from the county indicated that
the overall tax rate of $2.07 per $1,000 equalized valuation
(which included the library levy) is the lower than the tax rates

(StatePoint) A new school year means
new routines. And if your child is one of
the millions of kids who ride the school
bus, you should be encouraged by U.S.
Department of Transportation statistics
that cite it as the safest mode of trans-
portation for children to get to and from
school.
Nevertheless, riding the school bus
safely does require children to be aware
and follow specific safety procedures.
Thats why the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) and
Chuggington, the educational animated
childrens television program, have part-
nered to of fer parents and children
important school bus safety tips as part
of the Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!
traffic safety campaign. The national traf-
fic safety campaign helps parents teach
their children about NHTSAs recom-
mended pedestrian, school bus, bike and
car seat safety guidelines.
Below are a few school bus safety
tips from the Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be
Safe! campaign for you to share with
your children to make riding the school
bus a safer experience:
Be especially careful around the
danger zone, which is 10 feet in front,
behind and on each side of the school
bus. To avoid this area, wait for the bus at
least five giant steps away from the road.
Wait to board the school bus until the
school bus driver says its safe to do so.
Kids should board one at a time and use
the handrails to go up and down the
stairs.
Once on the school bus, go straight
to your seat and remain sitting, facing the
front of the school bus.
Look out for cars before getting off
the school bus. Once off, take five giant
steps away from the school bus.
Wait for the driver or crossing guard
to signal it is safe to cross the street.
Always look left-right-left to make sure no
cars are coming before crossing the
road.
Traffic safety education should be a
positive, shared family experience. By
following the rules, both parents and chil-
dren can help make getting to and from
school each day safer for everyone.

The 22nd Assembly District Republican
primary features an incumbent who has been
in the Legislature since 2004 against a chal-
lenger making his first bid for public office.
The district covers portions of
Menomonee Falls, Lannon, Lisbon, Richfield
and Erin. Don Pridemore, who is seeking re-
election to the legislature, is facing Nick
Oliver.
Don Pridemore
Pridemore was born and raised in
Milwaukee and graduated from Milwaukee
Lutheran High School. He served in the Air
Force from 1965-69 and graduated from
Marquette University in 1977 with a degree
in electrical engineering. Prior to being elect-
ed to the Legislature, he was an electronics
research technician, electronics design engi-
neer and a senior electronics project engi-
neer.
During an interview last week, Pridemore
noted that three bills he sponsored were
passed by the Legislature
"Were just beginning to get Wisconsin
back on track," Pridemore said, referring to
improving the states economy and budget.
Pridemore cited the work done by Gov.
Scott Walker, and said that "he and I think
very much alike."
Pridemore said that jobs would continue
to be the number one issue, and said more
could be done to encourage businesses to
expand and grow while encouraging new
businesses to move into the state. Pridemore
said taxes will continue to be an issue resi-
dents will be concerned with and added that
a photo ID for voting will also continue to be
a concern. Pridemore sponsored photo ID
voting legislation that was more comprehen-
sive than what was approved by the
Legislature. The bill approved by the
Legislature is currently stalled in the courts.
Nick Oliver
Oliver was raised in the city of
Milwaukee and graduated from Milwaukee
Riverside in 1988. He resides in the Colgate
area. He is self employed at AIS Technology
LLC in Menomonee Falls.
Oliver said he is seeking the post
"because I'm tired of sitting on the sidelines
complaining and not seeing any real
changes. I've held the secretary and vice-
chair positions of the Washington County
Republican Party, myself and my wife have
helped on numerous conservative
Republican campaigns, including (Gov.)
Walker, (Glenn) Grothman, and (Sen. Ron)
Johnson. Knocking doors and doing phones
are things we've done for others so doing
them for myself seems natural."
When asked about the key issues, Oliver
said: "For me, getting the government out of
our daily lives and having it only spend what
it absolutely has to. This has been received
very well by every household so far in the
district-as expected."
Other issues mentioned by Oliver on his
Web site include restricting recalls to
instances when elected officials are charged
Pridemore, Oliver vie for assembly seat

Summertime is here and with it comes increased exposure to loud,
potentially damaging noise. Typical summertime activities such as watching
a fireworks display, mowing the lawn, attending a rock concert or riding a
motorcycle produce dangerous noise levels that can damage your hearing.
The American Speech Language Hearing Association recommends
protecting your hearing by avoiding excessively loud noises when possible
- but when your exposure to loud noises or activities cannot be avoided, take
a few simple precautions: (www.asha.org)
*Alternate noisy activities with periods of quiet.
*Use earplugs or other hearing protectors.
*Limit lengthy periods of loud noise exposure.
If you feel that you are experiencing a hearing loss, call us today for a free
hearing screening!

A fund raiser for a Germantown family
last week exceeded the expectations of the
organizers.
Bob and Becki Lubow of Germantown
were riding a motorcycle in Slinger July 10
when they became involved in an accident,
with both Becki and Bob dying three days
later. Survivors included their three children,
ages 6, 13 and 17. Roberts Frozen Custard,
W16040 Mequon Rd., held a fund raiser for
the Lubow Grotjahn Memorial Fund July 31.
All profits from that day went toward the
memorial fund.
A total of $37,072.12 was raised from
the event.
Never in my wildest imagination, event
organizer Jennifer Matheny said Aug. 3
when asked if she expected that amount. I
had hoped to hit $10,000. When I hit
$20,000 and counting, I was blown away.
The fund raiser had the restaurant
packed throughout the day. Afterward,
Matheny said the event showed something
about the Germantown area.

The Germantown Village Board
extended the conditional use Aug. 6 for an
assisted living and community based resi-
dential facility that is planned for Virginia
Drive just west of Division Road.
According to information from village
staff, the Greenbriar on the Point facility
was approved by the Village Board in
September 2011. The facility will have 20
units and will serve patients with dementia
and Alzheimers. One of the conditionals
for approval required approval of a certi-
fied survey map and site plans within a
year, and the conditional use permit is set
to expire in September.
Developer Roman Berendt explained
that there is a qualified offer for a man-
agement firm for the development and that
minor changes have been made to the
building interiors. Berendt indicated that
the delay in the project involved getting
financing for the project.
I am a little concerned about that if
financing is the problem, because these
things are popping up left and right
because theyre so easy to finance,
Trustee David Baum said.
Baum asked Berendt if there were
other reasons for the delay. Berendt said
the insurance company has raised ques-
tions about liability should a spouse be left
in charge of one of the patients.
Were addressing that right now,
Berendt said.
When asked by Baum, Berendt indicat-
ed the development firm was undertaking
at least three other projects while a devel-
opment in Greenfield was recently com-
pleted.
The board approved the request, 8-1
with Baum voting in dissent.
In another matter, the board unani-
mously supported continuing the condi-
tional use permit for the Christian Life
Center, which is located at W156 N9666
Pilgrim Rd. A conditional use is required
for the church because it is located in the
B-I Neighborhood Business Zoning
District.
Village Planning and Zoning
Administrator Jeff Retzlaff indicated that
the use was approved with a conditional
use permit to allow the church to operate
at the site until it would find another loca-
tion. However, there are no plans for pur-
suing a different location.
Zabel said that with the five-year time
frame for the conditional use permit
changes could occur in church leadership.
Retzlaff said a conditional use allows for
board review should the church operation
change.
Baum suggested a sunset provision
to allow the village to review the matter
should the church change over time.
Retzlaff said the conditional use cannot be
transferred and that any change in church
operation would end the current condi-
tional use permit.
Kaminski said she had no problems
with five-year time period for the condi-
tional use permit. She added that if not
the church, then what for the site.

We were able to come together as one
community regardless of our backgrounds,
our political views, whatever we came
together united to make a difference for
three kids in our community who needed our
help, Matheny said.
Darren Stamm, owner of Roberts Frozen
Custard, admitted he had hard a time
describing the day, making comparisons
between scenes from Field of Dreams and
a jam-packed block party.
Everything around our property, and of
course inside, was just jammed with people
wanting to do good for somebody else in
most cases somebody they didnt know,
Stamm said.

(NAPSI)There is a growing trend among consumers across America
toward seeking out locally designed and produced products. Investing
in American products is easier than you might think, especially when it
comes to quality.
Why buy American products? Here are a few answers:
Stimulates Job Growth: Every dollar spent on American products
helps support American jobs.
American Standards: Local products are marked with a special brand
of American excellence, efficiency and service.
Giving Back: U.S.-based companies that
manufacture products throughout the country
are well-positioned to give back to their local
communities.
Eco-Friendly: American companies are con-
sistently renewing efforts to promote environ-
mentally responsible manufacturing. Also,
their goods require less transportation than
imported ones, which cuts back on carbon
emissions.

on the Village of Germantown Water System

Works is noticing enforcement will begin on the

urge cooperation of all Village water utility
users. Violators will be cited as per Municipal
Code 13.19.
The Department of Public Works also
requests residents on private wells to voluntari-

resources your neighbors may share. Should
there be any questions regarding the lawn
watering ban please contact the Germantown

Since 1957, WASCO WINDOWS has
been serving the quality-minded homeowner
with quality home improvement products.
After 55 years, WASCO WINDOWS is
still the only local vinyl window manufactur-
er that sells their products direct to the
homeowner. When we say factory, we
mean it, a store spokesperson stated, noting
that buying direct from a local manufacturer
means lower prices and better service. Our
windows arent shipped in from another
state which means the customer saves
money, because there are no shipping fees
added to the cost of a WASCO window.
WASCO WINDOWS manufactures a
full line of vinyl replacement windows and
new construction windows. Their newest
addition to the product line is called Tilt &
Turnwindows that swing open like a door
or tilt in from the top. There is also a Tilt &
Turn French patio door.
Were really excited about the newest
addition to the WASCO product line, the
spokesperson said.
According to WASCO, the Tilt & Turn
window is the most efficient window on the
market and Wisconsin homeowners have
embraced the new product, with sales grow-
ing each year.
Another key factor that is a large part of
WASCOs passion for better service is the
fact that all WASCO Windows are installed
by WASCO bonded and insured employ-
eesno subcontractors. Wisconsin home-
owners like the fact that from start to finish,
all work is performed by one company. Also,
most of the components that go into a
WASCO Window are produced in
Wisconsin.
We think its important to support
Wisconsin manufacturers and the Wisconsin
economy, the spokesperson said. Buying
from a local manufacturer also benefits
Wisconsins economy as up to 80% of the
money spent on WASCO windows stays in
the local economy.
This approach is best illustrated by the
fact that when the local bank WASCO was
banking with was bought out by an interna-
tional bank, WASCO closed their account
and moved the banking business to a local
Wisconsin-owned bank.
Quality products and top-notch service
at an affordable price has been WASCOs
business model for over half a century.
WASCOs factory and showroom is
located at 5070 N. 124th Street in
Milwaukee and can be reached at (414)
461-9900. One can stop by the factory for
a free tour and see how WASCO windows
are made. There is a showroom located at
51st Street and Lincoln Avenue in West Allis,
which can be contacted by calling (414)
545-8520, and two stores in the Fox Valley.
The showroom opens at 9 a.m. Monday
through Saturday. It is open until 7 p.m.
Monday and Thursday, Tuesday, until 5 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday and until 1 p.m.
Saturday.
