TOMMY SMITH RESPONDS to the latest attack mailer:

1. I worked as an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA for 33 years. In 1992, and being very, limited to participate in partisan politics, I was helping Don Chaffin in his bid for re-election for Sheriff. One of his opponent's supporters did not take it well that Chaffin won and filed a complaint with the FAA. Of all of the things that this person filed on me, I did agree that the only rule that I might have violated was I did distribute political material. I admitted, and in fact I did give my neighbors a Don Chaffin for Sheriff yard sign that I had picked up from a friend s house. I gave out four (4) signs. In 1994 I took 30 working days off without pay. In 1993 Congress repealed most of the rules in the Hatch Act surrounding employees involvement in the election process. 2. During the course of this election, I found that I had not filed a required report to the state listing any interest I, or my spouse, have in a business and property I owned. When I was Mayor for 23 years, I filed this report each and every year. Sometime after the required filing date I found out that I had failed to submit this report. I immediately filed this report and sent in a late filing fee of $250. No one from the state brought this to my attention, no one found me guilty and I was not fined. It is just doing the right thing. 3. Tommy Quit Hampton. This is correct .In July of 1990 I had a job connected medical issue. I resigned in July and resolved the medical issue and ran for Mayor in the November 1990 election. I won. On August 3, 1981 PATCO union struck against the FAA, very long, story short. President Reagan fired 11,400 controllers out of 15,000 nationwide. The ones that did not strike were put on a 6 day 10 hour days, with only one week of annual leave per year. We stayed on this work schedule, except later we were allowed to take 2 weeks of annual leave, for almost 7 years. I was up for reelection in November 1982. I was so tired working 6 days, 10 hours threading the needle at 600 mph, I did not sign up as a candidate. One of my neighbors called me and told me that he was going to start a write-in campaign. I knew that based on history a write-in candidate in most all cases will not win. After the election the person in charge of the elections called me that night and told me that I would be the Mayor for another 4 years. I had beat 2 candidates that were running. This is the highest honor the citizens of Hampton have every bestowed upon me. In May of 2001, our council approved to buy 302 ac. outside of our city limits for $3.6 million and approved me to sign the agreement. They indicated that they are going to build a sewerage treatment plant. They did not have any plans to pay. Long story short again, I was not willing to sign the agreement that would have slammed dunked our citizens for 30 years. After I resigned they did not buy the land. Today Rocky Creek Elementary, Hampton Middle School sits on this land. Several weeks ago, I attended a ribbon cutting for the new Hampton High School. Our Hampton High School was torn down in 1953. Should you need more details, please call me and we can have a cup of coffee and I will share with you all of the details. Thank you, Tommy N. Smith 678-471-3278
