COACHES NOTES
FRANK VACCARO - Head Coach Well, the New Year is here and we are ready to head into the final stretch of the season. While we have lost some members of the team from the start of the year, we are also adding a few new swimmers and divers! Training in Mesa, AZ was a great time and the team handled everything we dished out to them. This will definitely pay off when we get into taper and prepare for MIACs. Highlights for 2011 include Ingrid Haugan moving onto each of the top ten lists in diving. We would like to send our respect to Nadia Labyad (1M 11 dives), Tami Klenke (1M 6 dives), Karen Docken (3M 6 dives) and Jennifer Beckman (3M 11 dives) who have slipped off their respective lists. On the mens side, Keith Keller (3M 6 dives), Brian Kisskeys (3M 11 dives) and Ryan Evans (3M 11 dives) have also fallen off of the top ten lists. You all have had a great run and we look forward to being able to bump more off all the lists over the years as the team improves and continues to grow. MIACs are at the University of Minnesota February 16th-18th, as per usual. If you can make it, we would love to see you! If you cannot, please give us a shout out to get the team ready to represent Hamline. Take care and Go Pipers!
*** Spirit wear is also available. We are selling hats, towels, tshirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. If you are interested please send me an email and we will hook you up! ***
2011-2012
Arizona or Bust
This years training trip was definitely a success! The swimmers who committed to the trip knew they would get worked hard and they werent disappointed. We arrived in Phoenix on the 26th in the morning, checking into the Arizona Golf Resort around 1PM to get ready for evening practice. The team got a chance to stretch out and swim away all the kinks, which was fortunate as 50 meter swimming definitely takes a huge toll on the body after a while. After practice, we went to dinner at a local restaurant called Serranos where they served authentic Mexican food so good! For the first 3 full days the team had two hours of morning practice at 7AM as well as continuing our regular afternoon practice time at 3PM. The Citrus Classic meet was scheduled on the 30th, so for evening practice the day before, we decided it would be a great idea to go climb Camelback Mountain, a good 1,500 feet at the highest point! Following our 3.5 hour hike, we piled into the van and went to visit one of our alums, Larry Hildenbrant and his wife June at their lovely home in Anthum, AZ. Not only did they allow us into their home, they also made us a spectacular meal of enchiladas and grilled vegetables. Nothing beats home-made southwestern food! At the meet, the team swam well, though sore legs and arms affected speed. However, as Frank put it: Were here for TRAINING, so this meet is just another part of that as well. Its a practice, so use it! Gustavus was also training in Mesa, so we were able to swim some races against a fellow MIAC school! Following the meet, the people who organized the meet and training provided an awesome meal of bbq sandwiches and salads catered by Allisons Texas BBQ. New Years Eve practice was our traditional 100x100, which weve done for the past four years. The swimmers had the rest of the day off and spent time around the pool at the hotel and that night we went out to eat at My Big Fat Greek for a New Years Eve dinner. The following day we planned to climb one of the trails in the Superstition Mountains 5,000 feet at the highest point (we climbed 2,500 ft). It was warm, sweaty and tons of fun! Some points in the trail had a tendency to go almost vertical, which really isnt so bad when youre climbing up, but

Morning practice! climbing down gets a little scary! Luckily the view at the top is worth the climb up and down its unbelievable how high a mountain is and you really dont appreciate it until youre standing at the bottom thinking Holy crap, I just climbed that. In my opinion, it definitely made the trip worthwhile! Flying back the next day was uneventful; nowhere near the hassle and frustrations from the California trip 2 years ago when we sat in the Minnesota airport for hours waiting. However, despite there being no conflicts and lots of juice on our Southwest plane, its always a little depressing going back home. Luckily a little bit of Arizona came back with us and we havent had snow or temperatures below 35 degrees Youre welcome. Overall, it was an awesome trip and we will definitely consider going back regularly maybe once every couple years or so!
