ABSTRACT Family is a basic social group united through bonds of kinship or marriage that is present in all societies.

Ideally, the family provides its members with protection, companionship, security, and socialization. And its primary functions are reproductive, economic, social, and educational: it is through kin itself variously defined that the child first absorbs the culture of his group. This family case study was conducted to assist the family in identifying their health problems. By using the family nursing assessment they will be able to identify present and potential family problems, as well as, immediate actions that can help solve those recognized problems. Family nursing need was based on nursing itself. Health problems, attitudes and knowledge of the family, availability and utilization of medical and hospital resources was assessed, analyzed and used as the guide in formulating a nursing care plan for the family. This study was conducted at Purok Balakayo, Barangay Olympog, General Santos City. It is situated at the southern part of Mindanao. There were about 66 households in the locality where the nursing students have interviewed, based on the assessed household for the community assembly. Consent was provided to the respondent of the study before answering the guided questionnaire through an interview. If a respondent declines to be interviewed, s/he would not force to do so. The respondent of the study was the identified family during the gathering of data within the locality. Family P is a nuclear type of family with two (2) years of residency in Purok Balakayo, Barangay Olympog, General Santos City in the province of

South Cotabato. The members consisting it include the head of the family who is the father, Mr. P, the mother, Mrs. P, and their six (6) children, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6. Family P has an ordinary type of house which is tenanted and stands on a rolling type of land. Their house is constructed with walls made of bamboo tied together and covered with a thatched roof using nipa leaves. There are parts of the house without walls which Mrs. P admitted that when it rains heavily, water enters. They have a small terrace infront of the house made also with bamboo and other types of wood. Their house is divided into terrace, dirty kitchen, dining area, and bedroom. In order to get into the terrace and the bedroom, one must climb an improvised three-step stairs made of wood by which Mrs. P admitted that it could be dangerous for their children. Mr. and Mrs. P both share the power of decision-making in terms of money or budget, as well as in the matters of health care. They contribute in budgeting their basic needs including costs in gas, food, school tuition,and their childrens allowances. The breadwinners of the family are Mr. P, Mrs. P, and P1 who both contribute to the familys income. Their estimated monthly income is P3,000. This is allocated for food, clothing, gas, tuition, and allowances. The ones responsible in budgeting or how the money will be spent is the couple. Based in the assessment conducted to Family P, it was find out that there are presence of actual and potential health problems that affect or may affect the family in the future.
