In Quran Allah Rabul Izat has revealed the seriousness of Riba in different stages just because followers of Islam

may not understand it that is the reason. There are about twelve verses in Quran that discussed Riba, the word Riba occurs in Quran about eight times including three times in Chapter 2 verse 275 and one time each in 2:276; 2:278; 3:130; 4:161 and 30:39.

Allah reveals as follows:

1. First Revelation (Surah al-Rum, verse 39) That which you give as interest to increase the peoples' wealth increases not with God; but that which you give in charity, seeking the goodwill of God, multiplies manifold. (30: 39) 2. Second Revelation (Surah al-Nisa', verse 161) And for their taking interest even though it was forbidden for them, and their wrongful appropriation of other peoples' property. We have prepared for those among them who reject faith a grievous punishment (4: 161) 3. Third Revelation (Surah Al 'Imran, verses 130-2) O believers, take not doubled and redoubled interest, and fear God so that you may prosper. Fear the fire which has been prepared for those who reject faith, and obey God and the Prophet so that you may receive mercy. 4. Fourth Revelation (Surah al-Baqarah, verses 275-81) Those who benefit from interest shall be raised like those who have been driven to madness by the touch of the Devil; this is because they say: "Trade is like interest" while God has permitted trade and forbidden interest. Hence those who have received the admonition from their Lord and desist, may keep their previous gains, their case being entrusted to God; but those who revert shall be the inhabitants of the fire and abide therein forever. (275) God deprives interest of all blessing but blesses charity; He loves not the ungrateful sinner. (276) Those who believe, perform good deeds, establish prayer and pay the zakat, their reward is with their Lord; neither should they have any fear, nor shall they grieve. (277) 0, believers, fear Allah, and give up what is still due to you from the interest (usury), if you are true believers. (278) If you do not do so, then take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger. But, if you repent, you can have your principal. Neither should you commit injustice nor should you be subjected to it. (279) If the debtor is in difficulty, let him have respite until it is easier, but if you forego out of charity, it is better for you if you realize. (280) And fear the Day when you shall be returned to the Lord and every soul shall be paid in full what it has earned and no one shall be wronged. (281)

After last stage which completely prohibits the riba and it portrays riba as one of the most gravest sins in the light of Islam which clearly and explicitly defines the riba to its followers. It is also reported that last stage also is an excerpt of several of Hazrat Muhammad SAWs sayings. Many scholars believe that verse 4:29 and 2:188 that says Eating other people's property in vanity and eating funds of others in vanity are about Riba. It reads in Al Nisa: O ye who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanity, except it be a trade by mutual consent and, and eat not up your property among yourselves in vanity The Holy Quran says: O, believers, fear Allah, and give up what is still due to you from the interest (usury), if you are true believers. (2:278) The Holy Quran also says: If you do not do so, then take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger. But, if you repent, you can have your principal. Neither should you commit injustice nor should you be subjected to it. (2:279) Above stated verses clearly mentioned that give up what is still remains to you from interest and you shall have the principal plainly conveys that Allah does not like the least amount of interest and creditor Is allowed to recover only principal amount of loan. In these two verses, the phrases ''what is still due to you from the interest" and "you shall have the principal" makes it quite explicit that Allah does not condone the least quantity of interest, that "giving up the interest" implies that the creditor should get back only the principal. Today there are different opinions of different people regarding injunction of Riba and its prohibition. Several arguments are puforth and same being reproduced from Historical Judgement on interest: Chapter 2 verse 278 inculcates prohibition of Riba and give up what remains above the principal which is without consideration. It is also proclaimed if above verse is not followed thereon as 1) A Notice of war from Allah SWT and His Messenger 2) Injustice and implication of Riba. Question why Allah SWT not declared war against those who drinks alcohol or committing adultery? Then there is something extra ordinary problem with Riba and astonishing concerns with it. Surprisingly following verse is from Makkah period which was revealed several years before the formal prohibition of Riba into vogue: It reads as:And whatever ye lay out as Riba, so that it may increase in the property of (other) people, it shall not increase with Allah; and whatever you give in charity, desiring Allah's pleasure-- it is these (persons) that shall get manifold.

The prohibition of Riba was enforced after the battle of Uhad in real essence. After the defeat in Uhad, people of Madina raised voice against Makkah people that they raised a lot of money through Riba and that money was used in war to finance the war weapons. Therefore the prohibition of Riba was enforced in Verse 3:13 and alternatives to finance the weapons. Verse 3: 130 reads: O ye who believe! Devour not Riba, doubled and multiplied, and be careful of (yourduty to) Allah that ye may prosper. It is very clear that the doubled and multiplied means excessive amount is considered as Riba.
