Many

of the Urban Nestwatch activities promote an inquiry approach to learning. The inquiry approach almost always involves giving students time to explore a topic independently (i.e., What is a bird? Where do birds live?) before specific information about the topic is distributed. After students have been allowed to explore and see certain principles in action, explanations are provided. The most common inquiry approach uses the 5E learning model:

Engagement Exploration Explanation

Object, event or question used to engage students. Connections facilitated between what students know and can do. Objects and phenomena are explored. Hands-on activities, with guidance. Students explain their understanding of concepts and processes. New concepts and skills are introduced as conceptual clarity and cohesion are sought.

Elaboration

Activities allow students to apply concepts in contexts, and build on or extend understanding and skill. Students assess their knowledge, skills and abilities. Activities permit evaluation of student development and lesson effectiveness. (Write, draw a picture, create a song, construct a diorama, etc.)
