With a passion for innovation, Nick Hammond, Ph.D. leads a team at Ablitech, one of Balti newest biotechnology companies focused on delivery systems for gene silencing and canc fighting treatments. Using his background working with both small animal cancer models a cell research, Hammond co-founded Ablitech in 2006 as its initial CEO and now serves as Science Officer. In addition to his experience in the discovery of novel pharmaceutical age disease treatment, Hammond also has extensive training in analytical techniques, small m synthesis and development of analytical protocols. He has authored a number of scientific presentations, and patents and holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from The University of Mississippi.

Pathsensors has taken biodefense technology to a new level by featuring the only product market that can identify 21 biological threat agents in three minutes. Its BioFlash-E is abl detect threats, such as salmonella or E. Coli, very early in the manufacturing process prev clients from issuing a recall after a product has been shipped. The environmental and food company, based in Baltimore, plans to hire a dozen new employees in the next 18 months expand their product line and clientele.

Advancing Depression Treatment

Rockville-based biotech Neuralstem has begun testing the safety of its treatment for major depressive disorder. The compound, NSI-189, stimulates new neuron growth in the brain's hippocampus region, which scientists believe is involved in depression and other condition including Alzheimer's disease, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The phase 1b s involves two dozen depressed patients and is expected to run six months.
