Module Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the module students will be able to: Develop an understanding of the international context and its impact on organisations Examine international perspectives on organisations by taking into account the economic, political, industrial, cultural and human resource management dimensions Examine the ethical and social dilemmas that international businesses face and ways of resolving conflicts Identify cross-cultural differences and their impact on communication, leadership, and management Develop an understanding of the psychodynamics of working internationally and negotiating and managing transitions effectively Examine issues related to mergers and acquisitions and expatriation and repatriation Explore how human resource strategies have an impact on working effectively in international situations

International Dimensions: The core basis of this module is on international perspectives of organisations. A range of examples, case studies and research findings are discussed to examine the same. This is explicitly addressed in all the lectures and tutorials with a special reference to different cross-cultural context.

Corporate Connections: Examples and references to current business and corporate practices will be used throughout the module.

Links to Research The module is informed by contemporary developments in research on international management and international HR management in particular. Guest speakers who are leading academics in their field contribute on their own areas of specific expertise.

Module Content: Week 14 Introduction to the Module: Why study international perspectives on organisations? current trends and the role of multinational enterprise in the global economy The International Business Environment: The international business environment; the internationalisation of business and approaches to management in an international context. The Role of National Culture: the meaning and dimensions of national culture; approaches to understanding and capturing cultural difference; key issues in cross-cultural communication. International Strategic Management: international business strategy and possible global organisational designs. International Mergers and Acquisitions: what are they and why do they succeed or fail? The significance of HRM in M & As Leadership Across Cultures: leadership theory; potential cross-cultural differences in leadership; leadership effectiveness International Human Resource Management: the issues, nature and scope of HRM and IHRM; approaches to international staffing. The Role of Expatriate Managers: use of expatriates, success and failure in expatriate appointments selection and training, repatriation. Diversity Management: dimensions of diversity, challenges and opportunities of diversity, managing in a diverse environment. Ethics and Social Responsibility: the importance of social responsibility in international business; approaches to CSR; arguments surrounding social responsibility in business and social audit. Assessment and Feedback Rationale and Methods: Assessment is via a two-hour unseen examination (100%). This assesses ability to apply substantive knowledge across the whole module content within a time-constrained situation and assesses ability to present ideas concisely. Students are encouraged to utilise lecturer office hours and group tutorials to obtain more detailed feedback and advice.

Ethical Approval: This module does not require any primary research for which ethical approval would be necessary.
