Fall 2012 Charlevoix HS Football GAMEDAY Program
By Chris Fiel
CHARLEVOIX This
season the Rayders
have adopted a new slo-
gan, No Retreat, No
Surrender, and new
coach Joe Pruchnicki
has those Rayders
working hard to em-
brace that and improve
on last seasons 4-5
record.
I'm recently retired
(from teaching), enthu-
siastic and disci-
plined, Pruchnicki
said. I love to coach
and teach, I feel very
blessed to get to do
what I want in life.
With former coach
Don Jess resigning in
December of 2011,
Charlevoix hired Jason
Katt in April only to
see him step down be-
fore the season even
got underway with job
security concerns in
early June, thus open-
ing the door for Pruch-
nicki.
Coach Pruchnicki
brings with him over
40 years of coaching
experience, including
the last six at Flat Rock
High School, where he
led the Rams to an 18-
36 career record, in-
cluding 3-6 last fall. He
also was the head
coach at Oscoda, Flint
Central, Flint South-
western Academy, Lake
Fenton and Goodrich
high schools, and was
an assistant coach at
Flint Powers Catholic

Pruchnicki is excited
about the effort from
the Rayder athletes,
just over a week into
practice, and their off-
season work ethic as
well.
So far, were looking
really good, the kids
are learning the sys-
tem at a fast rate, much
faster than any other
team that I've ever
coached, he said. I
credit that to the stu-
dent-athletes and their
academic rating here
in Charlevoix.
The coach also noted
that the seniors have
really stepped forward
as leaders and this off-
season has been tough
on them.
This is new for both
the staff and the kids,
Pruchnicki said. Were
learning from each
other and they have
been really receptive to
what were trying to do
here, these kids are a
bunch of fine young
men.
The Rayders open the
season at home on Fri-
day, August 24, against
St. Ignace, a team that
went 12-1 last season,
falling in the Div. 8
state semifinals, then
travel to Maple City
Glen Lake on Thurs-
day, August 30, before
opening play in the al-
ways tough Lake
Michigan Conference.
We will be ready to
play football, the
coach said. We will be
focused, aggressive and
disciplined each time
we take the field.
I'm excited to be
here, its a great com-
munity and a great
place to live, so far
everyone has been
great, we look forward
to an exciting year.

KALKASKA The
Charlevoix Rayders fin-
ished the season on a posi-
tive note, coming away
with a 28-26 Lake Michigan
Conference victory on Oc-
tober 21.
Janael Kelly ran for 125
yards on 17 attempts and
senior Andrew Potter
rushed for 102 yards on 22
carries and scored a pair of
touchdowns to lead the
Rayder offense.
"It was nice for our sen-
iors to go out on a winning
note, Charlevoix coach
Don Jess said. Kalkaska
battled hard and it was a
back and forth game, we
had several kids step up
and make plays when we
needed them, this team
had its ups and downs, but
always played hard and I'm
proud of them."
The Rayders jumped out
to an early 12-0 lead, but
then the Blazers came
roaring back by scoring 20
unanswered points before
Charlevoix was able to stop
the onslaught.
Charlevoix responded
with a Potter 2-yard touch-
down and a Jamael Kelly
conversion to tie the con-
test 20-20, before the Blaz-
ers tacked on another
touchdown to take a 26-20
advantage heading into the
final quarter.
Charlie Hamilton took a
6-yard pass from Tanner
Catt to even the score at 26,
and Kelly punched in the
conversion for the final
score of the night.
Charlevoixs Marc Dur-
kee preserved the Rayder
victory with an intercep-
tion with just over a
minute remaining in the
game.
I thought our offensive
line did a great job and An-
drew Potter and Jamael
Kelly ran hard and did a
nice job of protecting the
ball, Jess noted. Tanner
Catt managed the game
well from the QB position,
and defensively, Marc Dur-
kee once again came up
with a big interception for
us at the end.
Catt finished 7-of-20 pass-
ing for 65 yards, while
Hamilton was the re-
ciepant of five of those
passes for 43 yards and the

CHARLEVOIX After
knocking off rival oppo-
nents East Jordan and
Boyne City on each
schools homecoming the
previous two weeks,
Charlevoix looked to de-
liver yet another victory
as they celebrated their
own homecoming. It was
not meant to be, as Elk
Rapids was able to get
past the Rayders 7-6, on a
cold, wet and windy night
on October 14 at Kipke
Field.
The Elks were able to
get into the end zone early
and held their ground as
the Rayders threatened
but were unable to punch
it in after junior Tommy
Zipp brought Charlevoix
to within one on a 43-yard
run midway through the
second quarter.
It was nice to see
Tommy break one, Ray-
der coach Don Jess said.
He's been working hard
all season.
After the score by Zipp,
both teams were able to
maintain drives but both
came up empty. Turnovers
played a big role in stop-
ping some of those drives.
"I was very happy with
our kids effort tonight, it
was a nasty night and the
weather didn't do us any
favors, but that's typical
homecoming weather for
us, said Jess. We turned
the ball over a few times
in the second half and I
think that was the differ-
ence in the ball game. Elk
Rapids did nice job run-
ning the ball and eating
up the clock.
Leading the Charlevoix
offense was junior Jamael
Kelly, as he piled up 58
yards on 11 carries, while
senior Andrew Potter
rushed seven times for 40
yards, and Charlie Hamil-
ton caught three passes
for 24 yards.
Junior Andrew Robarge
led Charlevoixs defense
with 16 tackles and recov-
ered a fumble, Potter was
close behind with 14 tack-
les, and Coby Herriman
along with Greyson
Speigel each finished with
11 tackles.
Defensively, I thought
Robarge and Potter had
real good games, Jess
noted. We've got one
more game left and it will
be a challenge playing at
Kalkaska, it would be nice
to see these seniors go out
on a winning note."
Both teams now stand at
3-5 overall, 3-3 conference.
Charlevoix travels to
Kalkaska on October 21
for a 7pm Lake Michigan
Conference contest.

Charlevoix Rayders were
entertained by opponents
Homecoming festivities,
and for the second time,
they were able to spoil the
evening with a hard
fought defensive effort in
coming away with an 8-0,
Lake Michigan Confer-
ence victory at Earl Broth-
erston Field on October 7.
After an opening drive
by that saw the Ramblers
punt it away, the Rayders
moved the ball 39 yards
that resulted in a Boyne
City defensive stand to
take over on downs at the
Rambler 33-yard line, each
team took turns punting
for the remainder of the
quarter.
Charlevoix then got on
the board first at the 9:32
mark of the second quar-
ter as Boyne City quarter-
back Jay Redman was
tripped up in the end
zone, making it 2-0 Ray-
ders. Boyne City started
their drive at the Rambler
2-yard line after a per-
fectly placed punt by Ray-
der Charlie Hamilton.
After the safety, each
teams returned to playing
tough defense, resulting
in more work from each
teams punter.
The lone touchdown of
the game came after the
Charlevoix defense
stopped Boyne City on
4th-and-9 with 3.5 seconds
to go in the half. Instead of
sitting on the ball and
being content with a 2-0
lead, the Rayders went to
the air as quarterback An-
drew Potter found an open
Hamilton who then
pitched the ball to a trail-
ing Jamael Kelly who
darted into the end zone
for an 8-0 Charlevoix lead
as time expired in the first
half. The two-point con-
version attempt was no
good.
This was an exciting
game to be a part of, an
elated Rayder coach Don
Jess said. I knew going in
that Boyne would give us
a heck of a game on their
homecoming. We had a lot
of different players step
up and make plays
tonight, even though we
came up short on a few
drives and should've put
more points on the board,
but I give a lot of credit to
Boyne.
The second half began
with the Ramblers turn-
ing the ball as Potter
picked off the first of his
two interceptions.
Charlevoix then traveled
down the field for a drive
of 42 yards, but again, the
Ramblers stopped the
Rayders on fourth down at
the 3-yard line with 7:14 to
go in the contest. The
teams would then trade
punts once again. The
final two drives of the
third quarter would result
in each team turning it
over on downs.
In the final quarter, the
Rayders moved the ball up
the field on two separate
occasions only to turn it
over on downs and then
missed a 27-yard field goal
with 3:21 remaining. On
Boyne Citys first drive of
the fourth quarter saw the
Ramblers move the ball 40
yards but that came to a
screeching halt as Potter
picked off an errant
Bradley Fouchia halfback
option pass attempt with
2:06 to go.
The Rambler defense
would then hold the Ray-
ders to 3-and-out on their
next possession, and took
over and proceeded to

move the ball 63 yards to
within striking distance
with under a minute to
play, highlighted by a 40
yard completion from Jay
Redman to Fouchia.
After a Rayder penalty
moved the Ramblers to
the 10 yard line, senior
Marc Durkee made one of
the biggest plays of the
night as he intercepted a
pass in the end zone that
was intended for Boyne
City receiver Noah Aller.
The pass had hit Aller and
before it contacted the
ground, Durkee snatched
the ball and corralled it
with 42.8 seconds remain-
ing in the game and pre-
serving the shutout
victory for Charlevoix.
The win was the Ray-
ders first over Boyne City
since the 2006 season, as
Charlevoix improved to 3-
4 overall, 3-3 conference,
while the Ramblers
slipped to 3-4 overall, 3-3
conference.
Leading the Charlevoix
offense was Kelly with 95
yards on 20 attempts and
had two receptions for 22
yards, while Potter
chipped in with seven car-
ries for 25 yards. Potter,
the Rayders starting quar-
terback, went 3-of-4 for 25
yards passing and the
touchdown, and backup
QB Tanner Catt was 4-of-9
for 76 yards. Hamilton
rushed for 26 yards and
caught three passes for 61
yards, and Tommy Zipp
hauled in one pass for 15
yards.
Defensively for the Ray-
ders, River Gauthier fin-
ished with eight tackles,
Andrew Robarge had
seven, while Catt and Pot-
ter had six apiece. Potter
had two interceptions,
while Gauthier was in on
two sacks, and Durkee fin-
ished with one intercep-
tion.
Once again, I thought
our defense played tough,
Jess noted, And any win
we can get on the road is a
good win, especially in
this rivalry."
For the Ramblers, Red-
man was 9-of-21 passing
for 110 yards, while Kee-
gan LaBlance caught five
passed for 46 yards, and
Fouchia had two recep-
tions for 48 yards.
Fouchia also rushed 10
times for 33 yards to lead
the Boyne City ground
game, Kerey Kuheana fin-
ished with 13 yards on
eight carries.
On offense, Keegan
LaBlance made some re-
ally nice catches and then
runs, Rambler coach Don
Nohel said. We picked up
several critical first
downs because of his ef-
forts and Bradley Fouchia
also made some nice
catches and ran the ball
hard.
We need to become
more consistent in order
to be the best football
team we can be, Nohel
noted. We made too
many mistakes against
Charlevoix to win the
game. Well isolate things
we need to improve on,
challenge the kids to work
on those, and keep work-
ing to get better.
Zach Wandrie had 18
tackles and a sack to lead
the Boyne defense, while
Kuheana finished with 17
tackles and two sacks.
Trey Reinhardt made 16
stops, Garret Smith had 15
and Fouchia and Alan
Manross each finished
with 12 tackles.
Our defense had a
great effort. We had two
goal-line stands which
kept Charlevoix from scor-
ing more. Nohel said.
Trey Reinhardt did a lot
of things very well on de-

Homecoming
Charlevoix 22, east Jordan 6
EAST JORDAN It is
that time of year, the
leaves are beginning to
fall and the weather takes
a 30 degree plunge in a
matter of hours, thats
right, its time for Home-
coming in Northern
Michigan.
This week it was East
Jordans homecoming as
they played host to the
Charlevoix Rayders in a
Lake Michigan Confer-
ence match-up, where the
Rayders looked to gain
some momentum heading
towards a playoff run,
and the Red Devils were
looking to break into the
win column.
The Rayders were able
to snap a two-game losing
skid as they improved to
2-4 overall, 2-2 conference
with a hard fought 22-0
victory, behind their
ground game and some
stellar defense on Septem-
ber 30.
Charlevoix took a slim
2-0 lead into the halftime
break on an Andrew Ro-
barge safety, before the of-
fense got untracked and
finally found the end
zone.
Tanner Catt danced his
way in on a 22-yard scam-
per, while Jamael Kelly
and quarterback Andrew
Potter both scored on 10-
yard runs.
Rayder workhorse Jake
McLean carried 13 times
as he rushed for 128
yards, Kelly ran 10 times
for 52 yards, and Charlie
Hamilton had a pair of re-
ceptions for 22 yards.
Leading the Charlevoix
defense was river Gau-
thier and Drew Seymour
with 11 tackles each,
while Andrew Robarge
had a stellar performance
with 10 tackles and a pair
of fumble recoveries to go
along with his safety.
Greyson Spiegl finished
with eight tackles includ-
ing a sack, and Clay Heise
had a fumble recovery.
"This was a hard hitting
football game and I
thought our defense did a
great job bottling up their
offense, Charlevoix
coach Don Jess said. I
thought this was a good
win for our football team,
East Jordan played a good
game and our kids really
came out and executed in
the second half, but we
have to eliminate the
penalties if we're going to
improve. Andrew Robarge
had a great game defen-
sively and it was nice to
see Jake Mclean find his
stride on offense."
The shutout was the
first for Charlevoix since
it blanked the Red Devils
during the 2009 season.
Leading East Jordan, 0-
6 overall, 0-4 conference,
was the trio of Wesley

Lewin, Tim Schutt, and
Marcus Wingate, as they
rushed for 37, 28 and 27
yards respectively.
Wingate also caught a
pass for 12 yards and John
Richards finished with
seven yards receiving.
The Red Devil defensive
charge was led by Wingate
and Richards with 12 tack-
les each, Ben Walton fin-
ished with 11, and Dillon
Sweet chipped in with
seven tackles. Noah Bac-
chus also picked off a pass
for East Jordan.
The Rayders travel to
Boyne City on Friday, Oc-
tober 7, while East Jordan
visits Elk Rapids on the
same night. Kickoff for
both games is 7pm.

GRAYLING
Charlevoix knew coming
in that they were facing a
very talented Viking team,
but still managed to get
out to an early 13-0 lead as
they forced Grayling into
turnovers on their first
three possessions of the
contest, but could not
quite hold on as the
Vikings roared back in the
second half, outscoring
the Rayders 28-6 to come
away with a Lake Michi-
gan Conference win on
September 16.
"I was real happy with
our kids effort tonight,
Charlevoix coach Don Jess
said. They gave it every-
thing that they had
against a very good
Grayling team, we had a
few costly turnovers early,
but I thought our offense
finally started to click.
With about a minute to
play in the first half, the
Vikings, looking to carry
momentum into the
break, went to their air as-
sault, as quarterback Zane
Tobin found Devon Daw-
son for a 70-yard strike,
but on the ensuing onside
kick-off attempt,
Charlevoixs Marc Durkee
snatched the ball up and
raced 56 yards for touch-
down and a 27-20 Rayder
lead.
We'll learn from this
and continue to get bet-
ter, Jess noted, We're
looking forward to our
next home game at Kipke
field vs. Traverse City St.
Francis. (Game on Sep-
tember 23 at 7pm)
The Rayders, 1-3 overall,
1-1 conference, were led by
Jamael Kelly with 63
yards rushing on 16 at-
tempts, while quarterback
Andrew Potter went 11-of-
17 passing, with two inter-
ceptions for 148 yards and
three scores. Potter also
added 53 yards on the
ground on nine carries,
including a 1-yard TD run.
Rayder receiving ma-
chine Charlie Hands
Hamilton hauled in six
passes for 60 yards and a
pair of touchdowns, Josh
Hogan caught three
passes for 35 yards and a
TD, and Tommy Zipp fin-
ished with two receptions
for 27 yards.
Leading the defense was
Coby Herriman with nine
stops, while Myles Kerr
finished with eight tack-
les. Charlevoix was able to
force the Vikings into five
turnovers, as Jared Reibel
recovered two fumbles
and Sawyer Russell one,
while Tanner Catt and

Shane Sutherland each
had an interception.
For Grayling, Tobin fin-
ished 17-of-32 passing for
243 yards, 3 touchdowns
and two picks, while Riley
Zigila rushed for 144 yards
and three scores.

Charlevoix 46, harbor springs 6
CHARLEVOIX After
scoring a combined 27
points in their first two
contests of the 2011 sea-
son, the Charlevoix Ray-
ders nearly doubled that
against the Rams as the
offense looked like a well
oiled machine picking
apart the Harbor defense
in a 46-6, September 2,
Lake Michigan Confer-
ence victory.
Rayder quarterback An-
drew Potter was on fire,
tossing three scores to
Charlie Hamilton on
passes of 71, 17, and 14
yards. Potter went a per-
fect 6-of-6 on the night for
130 yards. Hamiltons
three TD catches totaled
102 yards.
Potter also found the
end zone twice more as he
plunged in on a 2-yard
score, and returned an in-
terception 40 yards for a
touchdown.
Andrew Potter had a
strong game on both sides
of the ball and our de-
fense was tough once
again. Charlevoix coach
Don Jess said.
The victory, the first
this season for Charlevoix
who fell to both St. Ignace
and Maple City Glen Lake
by a combined 11 points in
their first two contests.
"This was a good team
win, it was nice to see the
kids hard work pay off,
Jess noted. It was just a
fun night of football at
Kipke field and our kids
played hard.
Tanner Catt went 3-of-3
passing for 38-yards, in-
cluding a TD pass of 17-
yards to Jake McLean and
John Boss rumbled in
from 13 yards out for a
score. Rounding out the
scoring was Josh Hogan
with a two-point conver-
sion catch from Potter,
and Hamilton booted a
pair of extra points.
McLean rushed nine
times for the Rayders for
54 yards to lead the rush-
ing attack.
On defense for
Charlevoix, 1-2 overall, 1-0
conference, Greyson
Spegel led the way with
nine tackles, while Catt
finished with two inter-
ceptions, Potter had one
interception and added a
fumble recovery and River
Gauthier and Jared Reibel
added sacks.
The Rayders will make
the trip to Grayling for a
key Lake Michigan Con-
ference battle on Friday,
September 16.
Rayders lose heart-
breaker in overtime
Glen lake 12, Charlevoix 6
CHARLEVOIX A late
comeback by Charlevoix
fell short in overtime 12-6
on September 1, as the
Rayders tied the game
with about a minute re-
maining in their home
opener, but were not able
to convert the extra point
attempt.
Quarterback Andrew
Potter found a streaking
Charlie Hamilton for a 16-
yards touchdown to tie the
score at 6-6, and after the
Rayders missed the extra
point, had another chance
in the overtime, and
missed a field goal.
The Lakers were able to
fight their way in from 5-
yards out in overtime to
give the Rayders an 0-2
start to the season, the
game which featured back
and forth action by both
squads, also saw both
teams commit four
turnovers.
"This was a great high
school football game,
Charlevoix coach Don
Jess said. As much as I
hated to see us lose, I
couldn't have been hap-
pier with our effort, our
kids played hard and we
just had some tough
breaks tonight.
Potter finished the night
10-of-19 for 168 yards
through the air, and the
recipient of six of those
passes was Hamilton who
finished with 91 yards.
John Boss led the
Charlevoix ground game
with 36 yards on eight car-
ries and Jake McLean
rushed nine times for 26-
yards.
Andrew Robarge led the
defense with 12 tackles,
Potter added eight and
two interceptions, while
Tanner Catt and Myles
Kurr also finished with a
pick each.
River Gauthier and
Shane Sutherland both
found the quarterback for
a sack each.
We improved for our
first game and we'll con-
tinue to get better." Jess
noted.
Charlevoix, 0-2, host
Lake Michigan Confer-
ence rival Harbor Springs
on September 9.
Charlevoix comeback
falls short
Rayders will build upon
strong second half rally
st. ignace 26, Charlevoix 21
ST. IGNACE After a
slow start, the Charlevoix
Rayders came roaring
back in the second half
against a strong St. Ignace
team, before falling to the
Saints 26-21 on August 26.
Charlevoix fell behind
20-0 at the half, as the Ray-
ders were unable to get
their offense going as
some first game jitters
and miscues led to the
deficit.
After a halftime of ad-
justments and words of
motivation from coach
Don Jess, the second half
proved to be an entire dif-
ferent Charlevoix football
team.
Jake McLean used his
breakaway speed, avoid-
ing the Saints defense as
he scampered 39-yards for
a touchdown, Andrew Pot-
ter took to the air for a 35-
yard touchdown
completion to Charlie
Hamilton, and John Boss
pounded in a 4-yard run
for the other Rayder score.
Hamiltion tacked on each
of the Charlevoix extra
points.
Leading the Rayders on
defense was Andrew Ro-
barge with 12 tackles.
Charlevoix, 0-1, plays
host to Maple City Glen
Lake, 1-0, on September 1.
