CAREER PROSPECTS POLYMER ENGINEERING What is Polymer?

Polymers are compound with repeating small molecules and right from the formation of polymer industry in India, the sector has been growing. Polymer is one of the important products of the petrochemical industry and this product forms the major part of petrochemicals. Polymers are used in the manufacture of different plastic products and this sector has registered a growth rate of 18% in the recent past. Some of the products of polymer industry include HDPE, LLDPE/LDPE, Poly Propylene, PVC and Polystyrene. Benefits of polymers: Polymer products produce several benefits and they are used for different purposes as compared to the products of the other industries like wood, steel, paper, aluminum, etc Polymer products conserve valuable natural resources and they are lighter, cheaper, and more versatile as compared to other traditional materials. Polymer products are widely used in packaging for extruded pipes, furniture, home appliances, molded industrial appliances and preservation of food products. Growth promotion of Indian Polymer industry: Government of India is planning to improve the polymer industry by achieving the following plans: Expansion of employment opportunities Creation of investor friendly environment Promotion of infrastructural development in Special Economics Regions and Special Economic Zones Internationally competitive and non-distortionary duties and taxes Plans are being made to emphasis on skilled manpower and infrastructure development Government is also planning to improve the manufacturing rate of this sector With the increasing consumption of plastic products in the country, this sector is expected to grow further by offering more and more employment opportunities. In addition to a number of private sector organizations in this industry, some public sector organizations are functioning to offer employment opportunities to deserving candidates.

What is Polymer Science and Technology? Simply stated, Polymer Science is the science of large molecules. By virtue of their size alone, macromolecules have certain unique chemical and physical properties. Polymers (plastics and rubber materials) have become an essential part of everyday life and are used extensively in a wide range of applications. It is also a relatively new academic discipline and one that is characterized by extraordinary breadth. Polymer technology is even more multifarious, combining polymer science with aspects of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and rheology, encompassing, for example, reactor design for polymerization from monomers through blending, extrusion, injection molding, vacuum forming, reaction injection molding to the production and use of polymer colloids for drug delivery and adhesives. The interdisciplinary nature of polymer science and technology and their close interactions with more traditional disciplines is illustrated below

Careers in Polymer Engineering : Polymer engineers are involved in the selection, design and manufacture of products made from plastics and rubber materials. Plastics products now satisfy many of the functions that were previously served by other more traditional materials such as metals and wood. The use of plastics also often leads to significant savings in the manufacturing process. Polymer engineers are concerned with the knowledge of polymeric materials, their properties, the necessary processing techniques, and quality control procedures. They also work as consultants in design and project management, and interface with those employed in many other areas of engineering. Plastics and rubber are used for a wide variety of products, including toys, household wares, and industrial components of various shape and sizes. In addition, refrigerators, automobiles, radio and television sets, paints, synthetic textiles, aircraft and

shipping, as well as defense equipment, medical and surgical products, have an unavoidable dependence on plastics of various kinds. As plastic usage have increased a lot, proper management of plastic is necessary. This necessitated the requirement of developing eco friendly plastics for reducing pollution and increasing recyclability. Here comes the role of polymer engineer. They must have an understanding of both the properties of polymer materials and the processing methods used to shape them into the products we see in our everyday lives. Thus duties of polymer engineer involve supervising the production process of plastics and other polymers. It is under their supervision, plastic moulders and technicians carry out the shop floor manufacturing processes. Job Opportunities: Polymer Engineers have the job opportunities in various Government organization like DRDO, Rubber Board, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Indian Rubber Manufacturing and research Association (IRMRA), National Chemical Laboratory, Gas Authority of India (GAIL) etc. & Nongovernment organizations such as Reliance Industries Ltd., Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd., Finolex Industries, Asian Paints , Videocon International , Tata Auto Component Systems , GE Plastics, VIP Industries , Supreme Industries , Pearl pet, Haldia Petrochemicals ltd., Jindal Polyfilms, MRF Tyres, Goodyear Tyres, Bajaj Auto and many other. In these organizations for the various positions students can find their jobs as follows: 1. Production manager/engineering technologist 2. Materials technologist, 3. Process engineering technologist, 4. Research and development technologist, 5. Product development management, 6. Mold and die development specialist, 7. Quality control specialist. 8. Sales and service representative & many more. Self-Employment Opportunities Self-employment opportunities also exist in the form of dynamic delivery networks for those who want to work on their own. Polymer/Plastics and Rubber technologists and engineers are required in these industries for manufacturing or production, processing, packaging sectors. All this needs preparation of raw materials for processing which involves selection, or cleaning of the raw material, followed by the actual processing, which could be chopping, blanching, crushing, mixing or even cooking of the food item, the addition of preservatives and the final packaging maintaining hygiene and maintaining quality of products.

Personal attributes required in Polymer Industry Diligent, Meticulous, organizational abilities, prudent, hard working, are professional courses. Some universities in India offer degree courses in Polymer/Rubber/Plastics Engineering and Technology. There are also IITs and institutes offering Post Graduate courses in Rubber Technology, Polymer Technology, Polymer Engineering, Plastics Engineering etc. Admission for under Graduate courses in Polymer/Rubber/Plastics Engineering and Technology is open for candidates with Physics, Chemistry Mathematics (PCM) at 10+2 level or Diploma holders with medium of instruction as English from AICTE approved Polytechnics.
