ER WORTHY PT 1
I. INTRODUCTION A. In the first three chapters of this epistle the apostle Paul connects the hearts of the saints with the plan, ways and purposes of Gods heart. I believe that the first chapter connects the heart of the believer with the office and function of the Father as author and initiator of the mystery whereas the 2nd chapter focuses on the office of the Son, and the 3rd chapter focuses on the activity of the Holy Spirit in bringing about the will of God. God has a purpose and a destiny for the redeemed in that before the foundations of the earth He wanted a people who would be His sons and the bride of His Son in the embrace of the Trinity and one another, ruling and reigning in the kingdom of God. In chapter two we see that God pursued His inheritance even unto death on the cross and shed His blood in order to purchase Gods inheritance. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, is made available to the people of God by way of revelation, power and might being released in the inner man, bringing the redeemed (Jew and Gentile) into the fullness of God. The fullness of God is both mystical and practical. It is mystical in that it is the full experience (knowledge) of the glory of God. It is practical in that the fullness of God is God no longer striving with His peoplethe people of God are walking in full agreement with Gods ways, plans and purposes. You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth. Revelation 5:9-10 (New King James Version)

Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:48

The anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart. In the latter days you will understand it perfectly. Jeremiah 23:20 I call Ephesians the epistle of fullness because it puts before the Church of Jesus the vision of fullness. The issue of fullness is about the Church walking in the full destiny of experiencing Gods gifts, fruit and wisdom. Paul continues with the theme of experiencing the exceeding greatness of Gods power, but now in Ch 4-6 he calls the church to respond to the mystery of God by cooperating with the grace of God and pursuing 100% obedience.

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. (1 Peter 5:10) F. The pursuit of the Sermon on the Mount lifestyle is what allows us to grow, becoming fruitful in the knowledge of the mystery of God. It is not just a matter of study, though study is a vital part of the pursuit of the knowledge of God. The knowledge of God is kept as we do not attain but aggressively pursue lives of 100% obedience in the grace of God. also for this very reason (the reason of having been empowered by the knowledge of God), giving all diligence, add to your faith(Heb 11 the gift of God that connects us with eternity) virtue (moral excellence i.e. eyes and speech), to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge (the knowledge of God) self-control, to self-control (self-government over ones soul and its desires) perseverance, to perseverance (persistence in the context of the oppositions of life) godliness,7to godliness (living a devout life, fasted lifestyle, spiritual disciplines) brotherly kindness (reality of affection and favor fitting for brothers), and to brotherly kindness love. A. B. Paul considers himself not a prisoner of Rome but rather the prisoner of Christ Jesus. Paul sees his tribulations as primarily taking place under the auspices of the Lords leadership. The imprisonment of the apostle is all in keeping with the sovereignty of God and the furtherance of the gospel.

being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:19-20 C. Paul calls the believer to walk in a manner worthy of a people who have eternal and divine destiny. The walk worthy means to walk in the manner of being qualified before God through His grace. Chapter 4 begins the practical outworking of the mystery (Ch 1-3), calling the redeemed to walk with the purpose and in the identity of the Bride of Christ. In 4:2 a people walking worthy is a people walking in humility, gentleness and patience. Holiness is reflected in our conduct towards one another.

COMPONENTS OF A WORTHY COMMUNITY: THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT (4:4-6) A. Though applicable to the church in any context, in the immediate context Paul is writing to a body consisting of Jew and Gentile. There is undoubtedly still residue of suspicion, bitterness etc. etc. in the body due to the racial tension that threatens the unity of the body which is the inheritance of God. Paul calls the body to endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit or the unity that has been imparted by the Spirit in the grace of God to a body of people who have the same destiny as one bodyto corporately experience the fullness of the love of God. The premier vision of God is for the earth to be filled with the knowledge of His glory. The centerpiece of Gods eternal purpose is for Jesus to come back to fully establish His Kingdom rule over all the earth as He joins the heavenly and earthly realms together. Both heavenly and earthly dimensions must come together to fully express Gods personality and purposes. It will be in that context that God will dwell with His body Jew and Gentile as One Man may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:19-20 He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Ephesians 1:22-23 The union that we are to walk in is modeled by the Trinity and is empowered by the Trinity.

that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. John 17:21-23 Paul connects the being of one body to us being of one Spirit in that by the indwelling Spirit we are brought into one body and that the manifold operation of the Spirit is dispersed throughout the body. It is essential that the gifts of the Spirit work in harmony with one another. The Holy Spirit has given the diversity of gifts throughout the body that we might learn to lean on one another. No one person has all the giftsthe Spirit is keeping us from independence and moving us into interdependence, first upon the Spirit of God and second upon the body. The power of God is not only shared with the apostolic ministry (3:7), the body also partakes of the power of God to labor with the Spirit bringing the body into the fullness of her destiny. There is union in diversity by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit, through the exceeding greatness of God power by which He raised Jesus from the dead will bring the people of God into the hope of His calling, which is our eternal destiny. There is one Lord who is the object of our faith (one faith) and in whose name we are baptized, in water and by the Spirit (one baptism).

D.

E. F.
3

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:3-4 4:6, there is one Father who is God of all (3:14). This is stunning, that God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy One of Israel, is now also the God of the Gentiles who is: 1. 2. 3. Above all He transcends ethnicity Through all His power and will is accomplished in and through Jew and Gentile In all the building of God is comprised of Jew and Gentile

G.

H.

3:8-10, the power of the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the power that is given to the people of God for ministry by the expression of the diversity of gifts of the Spirit. The exceeding greatness of His power is not only the power available to us for holiness or character but it is the power made available to the church to walk in the fullness of gifts, fruits and wisdom.

THE FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the headChrist 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:11-16 A. B. Apostles and prophets, etc. will equip the Church until three things occur in the Church: unity, intimacy (knowledge of God) and maturity. The five-fold ministry is given by Jesus to His people for the purpose of bringing the church into: 1. 2. 3. C. Unity of the faith unity The knowledge of the Son of God intimacy The stature of the fullness of Christ maturity

The five-fold ministry brings the church into the above mentioned realities by equipping the saints: 1. 2. For the work of ministry For the edifying of the body of Christ

D.

The expression of unified people in intimacy with Jesus and walking in maturity (fullness) is: 1. 2. No longer tossed like children stability of spirit and soul Not carried by every wind of doctrine firmly planted in apostolic doctrine

Not carried by the trickery of men in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting discernment

Oh, that you would bear with me in a little follyand indeed you do bear with me. 2 For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:1-3 Speaking the truth in love sincerity Growing up in all things (time, energy, money, speech, eyes, thoughts etc). Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:48 The whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies interdependence in the body According to the effective working the anointing of the Spirit (1:19; 3:7-8, 4:7) Growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love voluntary lovers (3:17-19)

PUT OFF THE OLD MAN 4:17-22 A. Paul begins to address pastoral issues in the church of Ephesus calling the church to walk out the expression of being a New Man. The Lord has given His body the Spirit of God for: 1. 2. B. Ministry Grace

In light of the Spirit of grace that is given to us we are called to pursue the calling of God to be voluntary lovers (1st and 2nd commandment) with all our heart, mind, soul and strength by no longer walking in our former way, as mentioned in 2:2-3 according to: 1. 2. 3. Value system of this world Leadership of Satan The dictates of our own heart and its lusts

C.

4:18, the world walking with a darkened mind is a direct antithesis of the body (1:18), and Paul prays that our hearts would be enlightened by the Spirit.

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body (person) will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body (person) will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Mt. 6:22-23) D. E. In Scripture, our body often refers to our whole personhood (instead of only our outer man). Being full of light includes the following: 1. The supernatural ability to feel loved by God and to feel love back (for Him and others).
5

Whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. (1 Jn. 2:5)

2.

Receiving revelation (living understand) of the Word.

130

The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding (Ps. 119:130)

God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God (2 Cor. 4:6) 3. Being led into deep encounter with God (in His holy place) by His light.
3

Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle. (Ps. 43:3) 4. Feeling delight in doing Gods will, meditating on His Word and embracing holiness.
8

I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart. (Ps. 40:8)

F.

God promises to fill anyone with light if they will give themselves fully to cultivating it.
36

The whole body will be full of light, asthe bright shining of a lamp. (Lk. 11:36)

I will not rest until her righteousness goes forth as brightnessas a lamp that burns. (Isa. 62:1)
35

He (John the Baptist) was the burning and shining lamp... (Jn. 5:35)

VI. PUT ON THE NEW MAN CREATED ACCORDING TO GOD (4:23-32) A. B. 4:23-24, we are to actively walk away from lusts and the things that stir lustful desires. At the new birth, the Holy Spirit comes to live in our spirit. The new birth is about much more than being forgiven, it emphasizes being born into a new reality of connectedness with the Spirit. The uncreated life of God dwelling in us is the core reality of the new birth (Jn. 3:3-5).
17 But

he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. (1 Cor 6:17)

C.

God deposited into our spirit the seed of His very being. The eternal uncreated life of God came to live in us. One purpose for this was to destroy the works of darkness in us. The person born of God no longer lives in habitual sin (as they formerly did) but wages war against it.
8For

this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him. (1 Jn. 3:8-9) D. Jesus is a high priest according to the power of the Spirit who is described as an indestructible life. In other words, the Spirit has power to destroy all the lust and darkness that opposes Him. At the new birth, we received the Holy Spirit or the power of Gods indestructible life.
15 If

another priest (Jesus) arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become suchaccording to the power of an indestructible life. (Heb 7:15-16, NAS) E. God created us in three parts, spirit, soul and body. Our inner man or the hidden person of the heart is comprised of spirit and soul (mind, emotions, will). The outer man is our physical body.
23 May 16

your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless (1 Thes. 5:23)

Our outward man is perishingthe inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Cor. 4:16)
3

Do not let your adornment be merely outward4 let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Pet. 3:3-4)
10

Put on the new man who is renewedaccording to the image of Him (Col. 3:10)

F.

Principle: we walk in the Spirit by talking with the Spirit. The fundamental and introductory way to walk in the Spirit is by maintaining an active dialogue with the indwelling Spirit. This is key to our transformation and renewal. It is so simple that is causes many to miss it. Words quench or release (activate) the Spirit in us more than anything else.

G. If we just talk to Him, He will talk back. He will speak to us once He gets us in the conversation. He speaks to us by giving us subtle impressions that release power on our mind and heart if we respond to them. He will talk us out of sinning and quitting. We will not walk in the Spirit more than we talk to the Spirit. He will help us to the degree that we talk to Him. We will not obey Him more than we talk to Him. The moments that we dialogue with Him are the moments in which we are most aware of His power in our inner man. We talk to the Holy Spirit as the way to experience the release of His power in our inner man. He releases small measures of power on our mind and heart, but the power is real. We experience the Spirits power in small incremental ways like we do with food and water. The emotional resource of the Spirit or the power of God on our emotions has 9 different facets of the one diamond of our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
22

J.

The fruit (result) of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience, NAS), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. (Gal. 5:18, 22-23) K. We recognize His presence in us by thanking Him for it. We thank the indwelling Spirit for His presence, power and leadership inside us. We pray, Thank you Holy Spirit, for Your presence in me that is mighty in indestructible love, peace, patience, self-control, etc. Peter emphasized that all that pertains to walking in godliness is already in us and is activated or released by the knowledge of God (which includes experiencing or engaging with the Spirit).
2

L.

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge (experience) of God3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain togodliness, through the knowledge (experience) of Him 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly greatpromises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature (character) (2 Pet. 1:2-4) M. We need to focus on the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit in our war against sin. Many put their primary focus on the necessity of denying sinful desires. We walk in the Spirit or walk in the light as the condition for overcoming lust. We remove darkness by turning on the light.
5 Light

shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend (overpower) it. (Jn. 1:5)
