Olympic Values Inquiry

You have the next two weeks to complete this inquiry task. You will be given some preparation time in class to learn about the Olympic Values and develop your research questions but the rest of the tasks will need to be completed at home as part of the homework programme. You can decide how you present your information but remember to follow the Inquiry Rubric to ensure your presentation has everything to receive a successful score. You will also need to prepare yourself to share your inquiry presentation to the class on the due date. DUE DATE: Monday September 10th

Now you have a good understanding of the 5 Olympic Values and have seen examples (positive and negative) of athletes displaying these values, we would like you to dig deeper.

Part A: Choose one of the following tasks to complete.

Choose one of the Olympic Values and compare and contrast the different ways the values have been expressed over time: Balance between mind, body and character (for example, going to the gym, the role of

the coaches).

Joy in effort (the changing ways athletes celebrate after winning or competing). Pursuit of excellence (for example, the influence of technology). Respect for others (for example, women in sport). Fair play (for example, performance enhancing drugs in sport).

Or :

Reflect on how values conflicts have challenged the Olympic movement in its 100-year history (for example, world wars, boycotts, drug scandals, corruption, prejudices). Choose one of these themes to investigate in detail over the history of the modern Olympics.

Part B: Write a report on an athlete that has clearly displayed one of the Olympic Values at an Olympic event. Use the Nick Willis example from class to guide you for this. (see sheet attached) Part C: Write a report on an athlete that is a poor example of showing one of these Olympic Values. For Example, Nadzeya Ostapchuk from Belarus losing her gold medal after her drug

tests were positive.
