Internship Proposals The following are three proposals for an internship in Educational Technology. Each will be based at Claflin University, and are derived from instructional, program and/or departmental needs. Many of the goals are mine; however, there are mutual goals in some cases based on observations, requests for my assistance in some capacity, or come as a natural fit or extension of my current duties. I. Assistant Instructor/graduate assistant 1. This would take place in the Technology for Teachers course for the School of Education in Claflin 2. My mentor teacher would be Dr. Robert Vanderburg, a professor in the School of Education. 3. Having trial run this process last semester to identify needs and assess the course, I propose to assist with the development of the course to be more in line with the expectations that come with such a course. The original design was project based and there is a general agreement that it has too much downtime when not geared towards a project and the theory sessions and additional projects can be more deliberate in preparing pre-service teachers with the tools to integrate technology in their classrooms, think critically about the advantages and implications of its use, and wield it as an enhancement tool for instruction. The project should result in the trial run and inclusion of a number of projects, or a curriculum rewrite that integrates the projects definitively for future iterations of the course. II. Tool Developer/Professional Development instructor 1. This would take place in the Office of Professional Clinical & Field Experiences (School of Education, Claflin University). 2. My mentors would be Dr. Bettie Hicks and Mrs. Trina Jeter, director/faculty and staff responsible for the functions of the office. 3. The accreditation process required a close look at the data collection process, instruments of evaluation, and tool for entry, and several redesigns and recalibrations were suggested to institute a process that eliminates the need to manually return to data and compile the artifacts needed for internal assessment, submissions to accrediting bodies, and individual, program or unit evaluation. The project would entail documenting the rationale for changes, after incorporating the best solution and training the staff on the use of the tool(s). III. Long Range Technology Committee Planner 1. This serves at the department and institutional levels for Claflin University 2. My mentor would be Mr. Joey Brenn, AVP for Information Technology 3. Tasked with looking at the plan for innovations, development, and stages of implementation of technology for the university, the AVP has tasked department representatives with technological backgrounds to consider the projected needs of the university over 5 or more years and how they can address needs in the departments simultaneously. This project would produce a detailed document with descriptions of changes and procurements, policies and operational guidelines, required training system and support, as well as costs and benefits.
