From the Vicars Desk And yet, we see God another way. We see Him by faith. We behold Him through what Brother Lawrence describes as t h e s o u l s i n t e r i o r gaze. It is a seeing just as real as anything caught by mechanism of the eye and brain. This is the vision which is promised in our Lords beatitude spoken in the Sermon on the Mount. He speaks of the pure in heart, the people who shall see God. While the absolute and total fulfillment of Jesus promise shall take place only at the end time, it shall also happen as we turn to Him with unquestioning obedience and heartfelt adoration. It is then that we see. We only know that at the end, as Joseph Sittler suggests, this seeing certainly will not be the discovery that God looks like us, only on a much grander scale. Such a claim would be both blasphemy against God and idolatry of mankind. What we shall see goes beyond the limits of human language. We simply know that we will see God as His glory becomes our light and His presence our life. In the meantime, through the Fathers disclosure of himself in His only Son, through this act of sheer grace, we are able to pray. With love and care, Mothy Achen
Who shall See God? By the presence of God and by this interior gaze, the soul comes to know God in such a way that it is..always engaged in this divine presence. (Delaney, 1977) Can a mortal human being see God? Moses asked to see Him, but was denied, except for a glimpse of the Lords d e p a r t i n g g l o r y. Furthermore, the Gospel has declared, No one has ever seen God (John 1: 18). If we are speaking of a visual record received by the retina, most certainly it is impossible to see God.
