Method of Analysis - 6.1

Area between functions f1 and f2 on a interval, I: 1. Identify the major interval, I, (if none is given, the major interval is between the leftmost and the rightmost intersection points). This will either be an interval of x or y. 2. Find intersection points, if they exist. 3. Sketch both curves. 4. Identify the intervals where f1 is above f2 (I1 ) and vice versa (I2 ), these should span the major interval, I. 5. Integrate (f1 - f2 ) over each interval in I1 . 6. Integrate (f2 - f1 ) over each interval in I2 . 7. Sum the areas. Note: Use straight-line test to decide if the major interval is x or y values. f1 and f2 must be functions of this same variable, and hence you integrate with this same variable. Straight-line test 1. Test to use x-axis: If you can draw a vertical line that intersects one function but not the other then the test fails. 2. Test to use y-axis: If you can draw a horizontal line that intersects one function but not the other then the test fails.

Solid: Find the volume of the region between two function, f1 (x) and f2 (x) (on I), rotated about a horizontal axis, y = c: 1. Identify and graph the region being rotated. This will require nding intersection points. 2. Sketch the 3D shape resulting from the rotation. 3. If y = c is on the region then the volume is solid (not hollow). 4. Imagine an arbitrary cross section, calculate the far radius function fr . fr (x) = ff c where ff is the function furthest from the rotation axis. Make sure they are functions of the same variable! 5. Identify a and b as the minimum and maximum values on the x-axis.
b

V =
a

(fr (x))2 dx

Note: for rotations around the vertical axis you have, x = c, ff (y), and fr (y). a and b will be values on the y-axis. The equation becomes:
b

V =
a

(fr (y))2 dy

Hollow: Find the volume of the region between two function, f1 (x) and f2 (x) (on I), rotated about a horizontal axis, y = c: 1. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 from above. 2. If y = c is NOT on the region then the volume is hollow. 3. Imagine an arbitrary cross section, calculate the far radius function fr as above remember ff is the function furthest from the rotation axis. Please make sure they are functions of the same variable :) ! 4. Calculate the hollow radius function fh . fh (x) = fn c where fn is the function nearest to the rotation axis. 5. Identify a and b as the minimum and maximum values on the x-axis.
b

V =
a

2 2 (fr (x) fh (x))dx

Note: for rotations around the vertical axis, fh is a function of y. Hence, fh (y).
b

V =
a

2 2 (fr (y) fh (y))dy
