Internet Killed the Video Star

The Project We are seeking to create an online feature exploring the effects that online streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu, would have on the Australian Broadcast Industry. A Changing Media Landscape Film and television media products are becoming increasingly available online. Schonfeld (2011) reported that nearly 50% of TV viewers are sourcing content online. Further, these patterns have changed and viewers are now watching online content during primetime. Accordingly, it is important that the Australian media industry learn to adapt to these changing viewing patterns. Online Streaming Online streaming refers to the viewing of television and film online. Companies such as Netflix and Hulu have capitalized on this trend, by charging members a monthly fee for unlimited access to material. These websites have been widely popular. In Australia, the company Quickflix has attempted to provide a similar service. Due to comparative lack of content, it has not been as successful. Further, we intend to engage users through use of a variety of multimedia techniques (Creech, 2011). Beyond base-line text, we intend to include video interviews with experts and picture slideshows to illustrate the change in the industry. Not only is this visually more dynamic, but with further give credibility to the site through use of experts in the field. Proposed Content We intend to report on the following aspects of online streaming: The legality of these services Protection of streaming rights Content restrictions The implications on advertising The effect on ratings The impact on live programming Target Publication This feature will be best suited to Screen Hub. Screen Hub is an online magazine targeted at the broadcast industry. This allows us to reach an audience with a broad understanding of these issues, and an interest in learning the impact online streaming will have on the industry. Engagement Strategy
