BIOL 1408/Genetics 2416 Lab Report Checklist:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Have you written a reasonable title? Remember a good title can be generated by answering the following questions: a) what did I do in this investigation? or b) what did I learn in this investigation? Did you write the introduction containing the two major components, such as the importance of your investigation, the overall principles in the experiment, and stating clear hypotheses? Have you written the narrative of materials and methods in a way in which anybody else can repeat your experiment? Have you presented the reduced statistical data of your results in a Table and/or Figure (graphs, pictures) in a way that the main patterns of your results are easily understood? Have you discussed the meaning of your results while addressing your experimental questions and hypotheses? Have you written a brief conclusion of your results stating what you have learned in the investigation? Have you listed your references* using the author and year or alphabetic systems? Remember that in text citation of your references are expected. NOTE: Sometimes authors choose to coalesce points (sections) 4 and 5 in a section titled: Results and Discussion.

*References (Literature Cited): There are several possible ways to organize this section. Here are two commonly used systems: Author and Year System 1. In the text, cite the literature in the appropriate places, for example: Scarlet (1990) thought that the gene was present only in yeast, but it has since been identified in the platypus (Indigo and Mauve, 1994), and wombat (Magenta, et al., 1995). 2. In the References section list citations in alphabetical order, for example: Indigo, A. C., and Mauve, B. E. 1994. Gene isolation from the platypus. Science 275, 1213-1214. Magenta, S. T., Sepia, X., and Turquoise, U. 1995. Wombat genetics. In: Ridiculous Wombats, Q., ed. New York: Columbia University Press. p 123-145. Scarlet, S.L. 1990. Isolation of intersex gene from S. cerevisae. J. of Unusual Results 36, 26-31 Alphabetic System 1. In the text, cite the literature in the appropriate places, for example: Gonzalez (3) discussed the genetic nature of the disease. It is now firmly established that the ABA hormone is the basis for the resistance (4). However, Addicott and Lyon (1) indicated that probably there are more than one hormones involved in the resistance. Briggs at al. (2) described the properties of the ABA hormone affecting disease resistance. 2. In the References section list citations in alphabetical order, for example: 1. Addicott, F. T and J. L. Lyon. 1998. Physiology of the abscisic acid. Ann. Rev. Plant Physiol. 20:139-164. 2. Briggs, W.R., W. D. Zollinger, and B. B. Plats. 2008. Some properties of the phytochrome. Plant Physiol. 43:39-43. 3.
