ndia, as one of the largest coal producers in the world, boasts abundant coal reserves and an annual industry growth well above the worlds average. Coal, as the
dominant energy source, accounts for more than two-thirds of total energy consumption. Driven by the expanding economy and growing population on the one hand and limited gas resources on the other, coal demand has been rising at a rate of 6% per annum since 1993 and is set to increase several times within the next 5-10 years. The obvious short term solution to this growing demand is to continue importing coal, but the long term answer lies in securing a steady supply of indigenous coals. This can be achieved by attracting substantial new investments into the industry an estimated US$ 18 billion will be required by 2010 to bridge the current gap between production and demand. There is clearly an enormous potential for development international. This extensively researched programme, featuring and investment, both domestic and
distinguished government officials and the most senior decision-makers from the commmercial sector, will bring you up-to-date with many key issues vital to the Indian coal market.
