TRAINING REPORT

Training Report

At Ludhiana, Alcatel Lucent Network Management Services Ltd. is particularly engaged in Wire-line Network Management. It manages the installation of New Broadband, Voice , Leased Lines and PRIs(Primary rate Interface) Connections and maintains the links, starting from different Exchanges up to the Customer End. The links could be simple Copper wire links or even high speed Optical Fiber Links. This company , Alcatel Lucent basically looks after following Services provided by AirTel:

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Broadband on ADSL Broadband on SHDSL Leased Lines Inter-city and Intra-city PRI (Primary Rate Interface)

What is ISDN? Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of communications standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video, data, and other network services over the traditional circuits of the public switched telephone network. Prior to ISDN, the phone system was viewed as a way to transport voice, with some special services available for data. The key feature of ISDN is that it integrates speech and data on the same lines, adding features that were not available in the classic telephone system. There are several kinds of access interfaces to ISDN defined as Basic Rate Interface (BRI), Primary Rate Interface (PRI) and Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN).

Training Report

ISDN is a circuit-switched telephone network system, which also provides access to packet switched networks, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in potentially better voice quality than an analog phone can provide. It offers circuit-switched connections (for either voice or ISDN is a circuit-switched telephone network system, which also provides access to packet switched networks, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires, resulting in

potentially better voice quality than an analog phone can provide. data), and packet-switched connections (for data), in increments of 64 kilobit/s. A major market application for ISDN in

some countries is Internet access, where ISDN typically provides a maximum of 128 kbit/s in both upstream and downstream directions. ISDN B-channels can be bonded to achieve a greater data rate, typically 3 or 4 BRIs (6 to 8 64 kbit/s channels) are bonded. BRI (Basic Rate Interface): Basic Rate Interface (BRI, 2B+D, 2B1D) is an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) configuration. It is one of two configurations for use in the access network, the other being Primary Rate Interface (PRI). The BRI configuration provides two 64 kbit/s bearer channels (B channels) and one 16 kbit/s Delta channel (D channel). The B channels are used for voice or user data, and the D channel is used for any combination of data, control/signaling, and X.25 packet networking. The two B channels can be aggregated by channel bonding providing a total data rate of 128 kbit/s. The BRI ISDN service is commonly installed for residential or small business service in many countries. PRI(Primary Rate Interface): The Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is a standardized telecommunications service level within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) specification for carrying multiple DS0 voice and data transmissions between a network and a user. PRI is the standard for providing telecommunication services to offices. It is based on the T-carrier (T1) line in the US, and the E-carrier (E1) line in Europe. The T1 line consists of 24 channels, while an E1 has 32.

Training Report

PRI provides a varying number of channels depending on the standards in the country of implementation. In North America and Japan it consists of 23xB (B channels) and 1xD (D channel) (23 64-kbit/s digital channels + 1 64-kbit/s signaling/control channel) on a T1 (1.544 Mbit/s). In Europe and Australia it is 30xB + 1xD on an E1 2.048 Mbps. One timeslot on the E1 is used for synchronization purposes and is not considered to be a B or D channel.

The Primary Rate Interface channels are typically used by medium to large enterprises with digital PBXs to provide them digital access to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

The 23 (or 30) B-channels can be used flexibly and reassigned when necessary to meet special needs such as video conferences. The Primary Rate user is hooked up directly to the telephone company central office. Broadband on ADSL2+: Though AirTel now provides ADSL 2+ services only for residential customers , still its good to know about ADSL first. ADSL : Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is one form of the Digital Subscriber Line technology, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. It does this by utilizing frequencies that are not used by a voice telephone call. A splitter - or microfilter - allows a single telephone connection to be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time. ADSL can generally only be distributed over short distances from the central office, typically less than 4 kilometres (2 mi), but has been known to exceed 8 kilometres (5 mi) if the originally laid wire gauge allows for farther distribution.

Training Report

CAP (carrierless amplitude/phase) operates by dividing the signals on the telephone line into three distinct bands: Voice conversations are carried in the 0 to 4 KHz (kilohertz) band. The upstream channel (from the user back to the server) is carried in a band between 25 and 160 KHz. The

downstream channel (from the server to the user) begins at 240 KHz and goes up to a point that varies depending on a number of conditions (line length, line noise, number of users in a particular telephone company switch) but has a maximum of about 1.5 MHz (megahertz)

At the telephone exchange the line generally terminates at a DSLAM where another frequency splitter separates the voice band signal for the conventional phone network. Data carried by the ADSL is typically routed over the telephone company's data network . What is ADSL2+ now? ADSL2+ extends the capability of basic ADSL by doubling the number of downstream bits. The data rates can be as high as 24 Mbit/s downstream and up to 3.5 Mbit/s upstream depending on the distance from the DSLAM to the customer's home. ADSL2+ is capable of doubling the frequency band of typical ADSL connections from 1.1 MHz to 2.2 MHz. This doubles the downstream data rates of the previous ADSL2 standard (which was up

Training Report

to 12 Mbit/s), but like the previous standards will degrade from its peak bitrate after a certain distance.

Leased Lines A leased line is a symmetric telecommunications line connecting two locations. It is sometimes known as a 'Private Circuit' or 'Data Line' in the UK. Unlike traditional PSTN lines it does not have a telephone number, each side of the line being permanently connected to the other. Leased lines can be used for telephone, data or Internet services. Some are ringdown services, and some connect two PBXes.

Training Report

A permanent telephone connection between two points set up by a telecommunications common carrier. Typically, leased lines are used by businesses to connect geographically distant offices. Unlike dial-up connections, a leased line is always active. The fee for the connection is a fixed monthly rate. The primary factors affecting the monthly fee are distance between end points and the speed of the circuit. Because the connection doesn't carry anybody else's communications, the carrier can assure a given level of quality. For example, a E-1 channel can be leased, and provides a maximum transmission speed of 2 Mbps. The user can divide the connection into different lines for multiplexing data and voice communication, or use the channel for one high speed data circuit. Increasingly, leased lines are being used by companies, and even individuals, for Internet access because they afford faster data transfer rates and are cost-effective for heavy users of the Internet. As told above since its a symmetric line so it uses SHDSL technology. SHDSL: Symmetric High Speed Digital Subscriber Line (SHDSL) can have two meanings: In the wider sense it is a collection of Internet access technologies based on DSL that offer symmetric bandwidth upstream and downstream. It is considered the opposite of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technologies where the upstream bandwidth is lower than the downstream bandwidth.

In the narrow sense SDSL is a particular DSL variant that supports data only on a single line and does not support analog calls.SHDSL technology can transport data symmetrically at data rates from 192 Kbps to 2,320 Kbps. SHDSL utilizes a single copper wire pair, making it an affordable DSL option attractive to small businesses.

SDSL is a rate-adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) variant with T1/E1-like data rates (T1: 1.544 Mbit/s, E1: 2.048 Mbit/s). It runs over one pair of copper wires, with a maximum range of 10,000 feet (3,000 m). It cannot co-exist with a conventional voice service on the same pair as it takes over the entire bandwidth.

Parallel Ringing With Parallel Ringing youll never miss a call even when youre away from your fixed-line. Protect your privacy, just share your fixed-line number while receive calls on two phone numbers including your mobile. You get incoming calls ringing simultaneously on your fixed-line and another phone numbers. Ring stops on the other line as soon as you pick any one phone. Call Waiting Press FLASH followed by 2, and take the second incoming call keeping the first one on hold. FLASH + 2 will bring you back to the first call. Flash + 2 functions like a toggle key. FLASH +1 will connect to the waiting caller and disconnect the active call. FLASH + 0 will keep you connected to the active call and disconnect the waiting call. Call Forwarding Have your calls forwarded to where you are: Call forwarding- No reply : calls to your telephone will be forwarded to another phone or mobile number, after ringing for 25 seconds. Call forwarding- Unconditional: all your incoming calls automatically and immediately to another telephone or mobile number. Call forwarding- Busy: incoming calls are diverted to another telephone or mobile number when your line is busy.

Three party Conferencing With this you can call two different telephone numbers, at the same time. And if you are already answering an incoming call, you can dial another person to join in. Press FLASH, and dial the desired number on hearing the dial tone. Once connected, again press FLASH followed by 3 to start a three-way conversation. To toggle between two calls press Flash followed by 2
