3.3 Grammar focus - Simple Future Tense (I will... or Im going to) Simple Future has two different forms in English: "will" and "be going to." Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. These different meanings might seem too abstract at first, but with time and practice, the differences will become clear. Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a specific time in the future. How do we use the Simple Future Tense?

There are two important future tenses. They are future will tense and future going to tense.
3.3.1. Form Will - [will + verb] Future will tense looks like this: - You will help him to repair his laptop later. - Will you help him to repair his laptop later? - You will not help him to repair his laptop later. We use future will tense for an action in the future if we speak spontaneously. That means I have a thought and I speak about it at the same time.

For negative sentences in the simple future tense, we contract with won't, like this:
I will not I will not you will not he will not she will not it will not we will not they will not I won't I won't you won't he won't she won't it won't we won't they won't

When we use the simple future tense in speaking, we often contract the subject and auxiliary verb:
I will you will he will she will it will we will they will I will I'll you'll he'll she'll it'll we'll they'll I'll

USE 1 "Will": To Express a Voluntary Action "Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one the speaker offers to do for someone else. Often, we use "will" to respond to someone else's complaint or request for help. We also use "will" when we request that someone help us or volunteer to do something for us. Similarly, we use "will not" or "won't" when we refuse to voluntarily do something. Examples: - I will send you the email address when I get it. - I will translate this letter, so Mrs. Smith can read it. - Will you help me move this heavy cupboard? - Will you make coffee for me? - I will not do your statistics project for you. - I won't do the entire project myself! - A: Youre really busy this weekend. B: I'll make some software applications. - A: I'm so tired. I'm about to fall asleep. B: I'll get you some coffee. - A: The phone is ringing. - B: I'll get it.

Examples: - I will call you when I arrive. - If I am elected Prime Minister of England, I will make sure everyone has access to inexpensive health insurance. - I promise I will not tell him about the source code. - Don't worry, I'll be careful. I won't tell anyone about your secret. USE 3 "Will": To Express a Prediction "Will" can express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Predictions are guesses about what might happen in the future. In "prediction" sentences, the subject usually has little control over the future. Examples: - The year 2222 will be a very interesting year. - James W Miller will be the next President. - The movie "Zenith" will win several Academy Awards. 3.3.2. Form Be Going To - [am/is/are + going to + verb] Future going to tense looks like this: - You are going to install my computer tonight. - Are you going to install my computer tonight? - You are not going to install my computer tonight.

We use future going to tense for future plans. That means I made the plan before I spoke.
USE 1 "Be going to": To Express a Plan "Be going to" expresses that something is a plan. It expresses the idea that a person intends to do something in the future. It does not matter whether the plan is realistic or not. Examples: - I am going to spend my vacation in Bali. - Tina is not going to spend her vacation in Lombok. - A: When are we going to meet each other tonight? B: We are going to meet at 7 PM. - I'm going to be an IT specialist when I grow up. - Linda is going to begin information and technology school next year. - The participants are going to drive all the way to Alaska. USE 2 "Be Going to": To Express a Prediction "Be going to" can express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Predictions are guesses about what might happen in the future. In "prediction" sentences, the subject usually has little control over the future. Examples: - The year 2222 will be a very interesting year. - The year 2222 is going to be a very interesting year. - James W Miller will be the next President. - James W Miller is going to be the next President. 5

- The movie "Zenith" will win several Academy Awards. - The movie "Zenith" is going to win several Academy Awards. IMPORTANT In the Simple Future, it is not always clear which USE the speaker has in mind. Often, there is more than one way to interpret a sentence's meaning. No Future in Time Clauses Like all future forms, the Simple Future cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions such as: when, while, before, after, by the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc. Instead of Simple Future, Simple Present is used. Examples: - When you will arrive tonight, we will go out for dinner. Incorrect - When you arrive tonight, we will go out for dinner. Correct 4. CASE STUDY 4.1. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF COMMUNICATION?

by Jonathan Strickland Fifty years ago, the tools we rely upon to communicate today were only science fiction. Today, you can purchase a Smartphone and make calls, surf the Web, play games, run applications and accomplish more than most speculative fiction authors dared to dream. So what's next? In the short term, we'll likely see basic cell phones slowly fade away. As Smartphone become more common and less expensive, more people will adopt them. The process is gradual. As with most new technologies, a group of enthusiastic adopters lead the way. Sometimes, the general population will follow the early pioneers - the compact disc is a good example of such technology. In other cases, the early adopters end up owning technology that becomes obsolete without ever finding wide acceptance -- like Laserdiscs. Smartphone seem to be in the first category. Products like the Apple iPhone and Google's Android operating system have pushed the Smartphone out of the world of gadget geeks and into the mass market. In 2010, the first 4G Smartphone for a major carrier in the United States made an appearance. It was the HTC EVO 4G, running on Sprint's WiMAX network [source: CNET]. The 4G network allows for faster data transfer speeds than other networks. The Internet will continue to play an increasing role in communication. Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) already plays a large role in several communication products and services. Sites like Facebook and Twitter allow users to communicate with networks of people. With the rise of the Web, people now have a platform from which they can address the world. In the past, only celebrities and politicians could address so many people at one time. Now, anyone with an Internet connection can do the same thing. This may lead to changes in everything from entertainment to politics. Using the Web as a communication tool, people with aspirations may be able to find an audience more easily than ever before. It may not be long until a relatively unknown person uses the Internet to win enough support to be elected president of the United States. So far we've looked at some fairly mundane advances in communication. But what about the distant future?
