Assessment

Using all the information you have been taught on

volcanoes, answer the following in DETAIL!

Mount Etna is a cone volcano. Explain what characteristics a

cone volcano has and where they are found.
Using Mount Etna as your example, explain why people live
near volcanoes, how they affect people and what can be
done to limit the damage volcanoes cause?

A few hints
• Your piece of work will need an introduction and an
evaluation
• The more geography words you use in your writing, the
higher the level you will receive!
• Use the word bank
• The easiest way to set out your work is in sections
• Use labelled / annotated diagrams and pictures in your
work
• Make sure you explain your answers and reasons in detail
• Think about the positive and negative effects of
volcanoes on people

WORD BANK
Cone Destructive margins Acid (thick) lava Pyroclastic flow
Magma chamber Crater Volcanic bombs Plate boundary
Subduction Trenches Barriers Evacuation
Zafferana village Nicolosi village Fertile soil Tourism
Livelihood Building materials Ash and lava layers
Which level will you be aiming for?
You all know what your target levels are for the end of Year 9 (or you should!). Use the
following to help you establish which level you are aiming for, therefore how much detail
you require for that level!

Aim high, there’s nothing stopping you from Going Green and going beyond your target
level now!!

Level 3
• You start to describe briefly what a volcano is and mention Mount Etna
• A small range of skills are used eg. A labelled photo, drawing
• A couple of words are used from the word bank

Level 4
• More detail is used in describing how a cone volcano forms and is explained
better
• You start to describe Mount Etna
• More of a range of skills are used, with fewer errors than level 3 eg. A correctly
labelled photo or diagram
• At least 5 words are used from the word bank

Level 5
• The formation of a cone volcano is described in detail and explanations are more
detailed and accurate
• You start to think why people live near Mount Etna and describe in detail
• A range of presentation of data is used eg. Correctly labelled photos, diagrams,
maps
• A good range of words are used from the word bank
• Work is well organised and set out

Level 6
• The formation of a cone volcano is now described in detail and explanations are
very accurate
• You describe accurately and in detail why people live around Mount Etna and how
people can be affected by the volcano
• A wide range of vocabulary is used from the word bank
• A range of skills are used without error eg. Annotated photos and sketches,
annotated maps.
• Presentation is excellent and the work is well set out

Level 7
• Exceptional work
• All descriptions and explanations are correct and in lots of detail
• Conclusions are used and backed up with evidence
• Evidence is analysed
• Additional research is used and explained
