A small stage with big happenings
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Haddonfield Sun
Nestled in a transformed house
between recreation fields and
Crows Woods on East Atlantic Av-
enue, Haddonfield Plays and Play-
ers has provided an outlet for
community theater productions
since 1934.
Every year, we put together a
season, find directors or the di-
rectors are the ones who propose
plays, said Collingswood resi-
dent Tom Lorenz.
As director for Picasso at the
Lapin Agile, he suggested the
theater perform the play based on
the experience of directing the
play, written by Steve Martin,
years ago.
This worked out nicely, he
said.
The play is completely fiction
and the result of Martins ponder-

Pastor to lead discussion
on author Michael Vitez
Pastor Dr. Wayne Zschech will
lead a discussion on The Road
Back, which earned local author
Michael Vitez a Pulitzer Prize, on
two nights in September.
Vitez, a Haddonfield resident,
first wrote the story while a jour-
nalist at the Philadelphia Inquir-
er. Response to the story prompt-
ed him to write the book the in-
credible, humbling, miraculous
story of Matthew Miller, a true
story of survival and recovery,
grace and grit, of an America
that shines families, communi-
ty, individuals and institutions.
Discussion will occur at the
Lutheran Church of Our Saviors
Parlor on Monday, Sept. 17 from
7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on
Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 4:30 p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30
p.m.
The story is as gripping as
much as it is inspiring. Miller
had just pedaled up a mountain
pass. He was 20, a member of the
University of Virginia triathlon
club with a resting pulse of 42. He
was on top of the world in love
and with dreams of attending
medical school. And then, cycling
along the Blue Ridge Parkway in
Virginia, tragedy struck.
The real story is not what hap-
pened, but what happened after.
Vitez immersed himself in
Matts remarkable recovery.
The Road Back is not only
about Millers drive to reclaim his
life, but about the people who
rode with him, rescued him,
helped him heal, and saw up close
his amazing comeback.

Area towns announce new
agreement to cut costs
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Haddonfield Sun
Audubon, Collingswood, Had-
donfield, Haddon Heights, Had-
don Township, Mt. Ephraim and
Oaklyn have taken a step toward
cutting costs in regard to a con-
struction code official and equip-
ment through a new shared serv-
ices agreement.
The agreement between the
seven towns was announced at
Haddonfield Borough Hall on
Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Officials have met several
times over recent months to dis-
cuss cost-saving measures and
plan to continue their regular
meetings.
Weve been trying to find
ways for years, said Mayor Tish
Colombi.
This agreement, she said, is
more formal.
This is really the first step,
said Collingswood Mayor Jim
Maley.
And a big step, he added.
The construction code official
and public works vehicles and
equipment would be shared for
emergency issues.
An inventory of each towns
vehicles and equipment has been
exchanged in order to cut the
costs of future purchases.
We have to do whatever we
can to save money and taxpayers
dollars, said Haddon Township
Mayor Randy Teague.
With the communities in the
area having much in common, ex-
plained Colombi, the shared serv-
ices agreements will continue to
sprout in the future.
All of us are friends, she said,
giving credit to borough adminis-
trator Sharon McCullough for ini-
tiating the plan.
Resolutions will be read to au-
thorize the agreement in each
towns respective public meet-
ings.
While savings have yet to be
quantified for this venture, ac-
cording to Maley, the group will
continue to dialogue.
Towns are sharing already,
he said.
In Haddonfield, a separate
shared services agreement for
court services with Audubon has
saved the borough $60,000 per

ings of what could have happened
if Albert Einstein and Pablo Pi-
casso had met in a Parisian bar in
1904.
The bar, Lorenz said, is an actu-
al structure that is still in exis-
tence.
You can expect Martins style
of humor, he said, though the lan-
guage is quite tame.
Theres one f-bomb in there
but thats about it, he explained.
Einstein and Picasso both pro-
duced big pieces of work in a sim-
ilar time period soon after the
play takes place.
In the play, discussions take
place between the two in the bar.
Its really pretty amazing how
it ties in so many really disparate
topics, said Lorenz.
One minute, the play is intel-
lectual. The next, its filled with
slapstick humor.
It just all works, he ex-
plained.

T
he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.
in our opinion
Nothing to revel about
But we like Atlantic Citys efforts to be more than a slot machine parlor
AC might finally get it
Sure the July casino revenue numbers
were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-
lection of gambling halls.
Haddonfield organizations
help serve the community
The Haddonfield Town Calendar is a
wonderful resource on which many mem-
bers of our community rely, a resource that
was made possible this year by the work
and dedication of the following people:
Tish Colombi, Arlene Fiorelli, of the Visi-
tors Center, David Podgor, and Robin Pot-
ter.
Haddonfield is truly a distinctive place
to live because of the hundreds of volun-
teers who make a commitment to serve the
community through the PTA, the Civic As-
sociation, Rotary, and other significant or-
ganizations.
What would our town be like without the
school fairs, the many festivals/concerts
throughout the year, and the parades, just
to name a few things that make Haddon-
field special?
If you are new to the community, we
urge you to come forward and take an ac-
tive role. If you are a longer term resident
who has been thinking of getting more in-
volved, we need you too.
We have all chosen to live here because
we get so much out of our community and
its traditions; please consider volunteering
in some small way to continue them!

Sidewalk dismay raises
interest within reader
I read the letters about unwanted side-
walks for Washington Street in the Aug. 29-
Sept 4 issue of The Haddonfield Sun with
interest and some amusement.
The town is forcing sidewalks on resi-
dents there who don't want them.
On the other side of town, on Coles Mill
Road, where I live, residents have been
stonewalled for any safety measures we
have requested over the last nine years in-
cluding sidewalks, crosswalks, rumble
strips, speed bumps or speed tables.
Traffic studies have shown 25,000 cars a
week pass in one direction on our narrow
street where people walk, bike and run
without sidewalks.
We have been told at the monthly TAPS
meeting that the solution is No one should
walk on Coles Mill Road.
When the land at 525-535 sold about 10
years ago and two new houses were built,
sidewalks were not added. The children
who live on Village Court and on Meadow
Lane, on the west side of Coles Mill Road,
have no way to go to school or come home
from school safely by sidewalk.
The two designated Safe Routes to
School are either along Maple or Grove
Street. But you can't get to those streets by
sidewalk from the western side of Coles
Mill Road.
We have requested of the town and the
county that they consider adding side-
walks where they are absent and/or creat-
ing a path along the park to connect Coles
Mill Road safely with Grove Street. All to

Recently, we requested that the
town establish a crosswalk at
Meadow Lane and Coles Mill to at
least allow the eight children liv-
ing there a defined route to cross
the street at a point where there
are sidewalks on both sides of the
street. Otherwise these children
as well as the adult residents take
their lives into their hands cross-
ing Coles Mill Road.
We were told that eight chil-
dren was not an adequate num-
ber to justify a crosswalk.
So no sidewalks, no crosswalk.
You're on your own in this part of
town.
Maybe we can have Washing-
ton Street's sidewalks since they
don't want them.

Business owner wants
stolen sign returned
After being in business for 10
years in Haddonfield, I have to
say thank you.
Please, please help me find my
business sign that was stolen
three weeks ago. Trying to figure
out why does not matter. I will
imagine its those crazy kids.
The sign cost $900.
It had to be just right for Had-
donfield, a wood-carved sign. And
the expense of replacing it?
Thank you.

Kids need real life skills
to manage school days
This time of year its hard to
escape the endless back to school
commercials with catchy tunes
and dancing actors suggesting
that kids are guaranteed to have a
successful school year if they are
dressed in the latest styles and
have cool school supplies.
The truth is that kids need
real life skills to manage their
day. Whether they are on the bus,
in the classroom, playing on the
field, or are out and about around
town, a variety of skills are re-
quired for healthy positive devel-
opment.
Social skills prepare young
people for success in adulthood,
such as learning to be good com-
municators, cooperative mem-
bers of a team, effective leaders,
and caring, concerned members
of their communities. They are
precisely the skills that today's
employers consider important for
the workforce of the future.
Implementing these five savvy
skills can help students succeed:

kids need to know how to get
along without cell phones, iPods
or text messages. Nothing re-
places face time like looking
someone in the eye, saying
hello, greeting them with a
smile and even shaking their
hand. Try it and watch your
world open up to you and good
things happen.
Get the conversation started
Staying in-tune with kids lives
can be a challenge. Make time to
mix up your evenings together in
small ways. Walk the dog, play a
game, share a snack, or prepare
dinner with each other. Kids need
to feel that others care, are empa-
thetic and that they are valued.
These elements may be the key to
learning more about your kids,
getting them to open up and vital
to developing their conversation
skills.
Believe in yourself
Each of us have special talents
and interests; likes and dislikes;
strengths and weaknesses. Our
differences make us unique and
special. Get out of your comfort
zone and put yourself to try some-
thing new. Imagine if you never
had a negative thought. You just
might discover a hidden talent
and realize that it could turn into
a career!
Start a trend
Kids yearn to be independent
and ultimately they need to take
charge of their life. Encourage
them to be self-reliant and gain a
sense of accomplishment aside
from schoolwork. Devise an age
appropriate plan about ways they
can step up to manage their daily
life. Be consistent and support
them to-prepare lunch or snacks,
manage laundry, and organize a
backpack. Encouragement and
practice leads to proficiency and
confidence. Do the Right Thing
Guess what- a classroom is a
microcosm of the real world and
includes brains, geeks, and jocks -
we all contribute something
unique appreciate our differ-
ences and learn from them. Be a
leader and resist peer pressure to
pass judgment. Their strength
may be your weakness. Learning
to live and work together, we can
collectively grow up great.

Cast began practices in July
in age from 19 to 65 years old.
The range changes dependent
on the show being performed, as
do experience levels.
Some people have a formal
background, he said. Other peo-
ple just started doing it with ab-
solutely no background in it.
Theyve all found places
here.
All members of the theater,
from board members to actors to
the crew, contribute on a volun-
teer basis, said Lorenz.
Involved with plays and players
since 2001, Lorenz has worked in
several local theaters.
Theyve all had their pros and
cons, he said. This is the only
one where Ive really felt wel-
comed. Its the first place where I
really felt like I was part of the
group.
While working in a converted
house, the community itself feels
like home to many people in-
volved, he added.
Im happy that Im one of
them, he said.
Being a performer really de-
pends on what is brought to the
table by the actual actor, he said.
Christie Jensen, who confi-
dently took her place on the stage
during a rehearsal a couple
weeks prior to show time, plays a
role originally written for a man.
I took a closer look at the
script and realized that theres re-
ally absolutely nothing in there
that necessitates it being played
by a guy, Lorenz said. Its what
you bring to it.
The rehearsal schedule is tight.
Much tighter than in recent
years.
Our schedule used to be a lit-
tle longer, he said, with eight
weeks of rehearsals and three
weeks of performances for non-
musicals and 12 weeks of re-
hearsals and four weeks of per-
formances for musicals.
The cast of Picasso began
practices in July for their three
weekends of performances from
Sept. 13 to Sept. 29.
But deadlines are good, empha-
sized Lorenz, and focus the mind.

Officials: Possibilities are vast
year.
The future possibilities are
vast, explained the officials.
There are numerous possibili-
ties to save money by working to-
gether, said Teague in a state-
ment. Tree service, paving,
equipment these are all things
we can explore to see if it makes
more sense to pool our re-
sources.
For potential liabilities
through the new usages, the
towns will coordinate through
their insurances, Maley said.
The future of local govern-
ment revolves around sharing re-
sources with others. As elected
leaders we have been charged
with the daunting task of provid-
ing the same level of services
with ever shrinking revenues,
said Audubon Mayor John Ward
in a statement.
Sharing services with our
neighbors is not only good gov-
ernment, but it is exactly what
our state leaders have been ask-
ing us to do and it is what our res-
idents expect today.
Bancroft update
The October 2005 appraisal
that occurred at the Bancroft
property was released to the pub-
lic on Friday, Aug. 31.
According to a statement re-
leased in part with the appraisal
on the boroughs website, It
should be noted that this apprais-
al is now seven years old and has
no legal validity. It was based
upon the R-2 residential zoning
previously established which re-
stricted development to single-
family homes on lot sizes of
20,000 square feet (approximately
acre).
It ignored the potential for
other uses.
The appraisal states that, at
that time, the final value estimate
of the property was $8 million.

ings, view http://www.haddon-
