Dear Reader,
The Passover Seder is the oldest surviving ritual in the Western world dating back some 3,300 years
to the last night the Jewish people were in Egypt before embarking towards the Land of Israel, Eretz
Yisrael. Since that time, Jewish families have gathered together to tell the miraculous story each Pass-
over. There is nothing else quite like the Seder. On Seder night, every parent is a teacher. Grandparents
sit next to their grandchildren in order to pass down the traditions "from generation to generation."
It is therefore a special privilege for eTeacher to be able to present you this unique Haggadah to
make your Passover Seder even more meaningful. eTeacher is the premier online Hebrew language
academy and we have tried to create a Haggadah that shares the wisdom of the Hebrew language in
order to enrich your experience and make your Seder even more special. This Haggadah is of course

Shalom,
Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of sitting around my grandfathers Seder Table with
aunts, uncles and cousins whom we only got to see on special occasions such as this. I can still smell
my grandmothers brisket and Matzah ball soup more than twenty years later. Each year, my grand-
parents who survived the Holocaust, would regale us with happy stories from their home in pre-war
Europe along with frightening tales of their time during the war. This Passover is going to be bitter-
sweet for my family. For the rst time in my life, I wont be with my parents, siblings or cousins which
will obviously be strange and sad. However, this Passover marks a special milestone for our family: it
is our rst Seder living in the Land of Israel!
For centuries, my ancestors have read the Haggadahs powerful words, "this year we are here; next
year in Jerusalem!" Now that we have recently fullled our life long dream of making "aliyah" and
moving to Israel, what a thrill it will be to say along with my wife and children, "This year in Jerusalem!"
Preparing this Haggadah has been a labor of love as I recall so many great stories, and Torah commen-
taries from my years spent around my grandfathers Seder Table. Unfortunately, we couldnt t them
all in, but I am proud of "This Year in Jerusalem" and hope that it adds meaning to your own Seders.

The Hebrew word Seder means
order because the night consists of fteen
orderly steps that each Seder follows. Why
cant each person simply celebrate our
night of liberation as he or she sees t? To
demonstrate the important lesson that
true freedom is not achieved by everyone
doing whatever he wants, but following the
word of God. Despite the seemingly rigid
parameters, go visit any two Jewish homes
and you will not nd two identical Seders.
Each family adds their own customs and
personality so that, in the end, the Seder
is a charming balance between structure
and spontaneity. This is the secret recipe for
how an ancient story never gets old!

this Festival of holy convocation, the Season of our

This is the bread of aictionthat our fathers ate
in the land of Egypt. Whoever is hungry, let him
come and eat; whoever is in need, let him come
and conduct the Seder of Passover. This year we
are here; next year in the land of Israel. This year
we are slaves; next year we will be free people.
What makes this night dierent
from all other nights?
On all other nightswe eat chametz or
Matzah, but and on this night only Matzah.
On all other nightswe eat any kind of
vegetables, but on this night Maror.
On all other nightswe do not dip even once,
but on this night we do so twice.
On all other nightswe eat sitting upright or
reclining, but on this night we all recline.

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the
Lord, our God, took us out from there with a
strong hand and with an outstretched arm. If
the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our
fathers out of Egypt, then we, our children and
our children's children would have remained en-
slaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if all of us were
wise, all of us understanding, all of us knowing
the Torah, we would still be obligated to discuss
the exodus from Egypt. Everyone who discusses
the exodus from Egypt at length is praiseworthy.
It happened that Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua,
Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi
Tarphonwere reclining at a Seder in B'nei Berak.
They were discussing the exodus from Egypt all
that night, until their students came and told
them: "Our Masters, the time has come for recit-
ing the morning Shema."
Rabbi Eleazar ben Azaryah said: "I am like a
man of seventy years old, yet I did not succeed
in proving that the exodus from Egypt must be
mentioned at night-until Ben Zoma explained
it: "It says (Deut. 16:3), 'That you may remember the
day you left Egypt all the days of your life;' now
'the days of your life' refers to the days, and the
additional word all' indicates the inclusion of
the nights." The sages, however, said: "'The days
of your life' refers to the this world; and 'all' indi-
cates the inclusion of the days of Messiah."

Uncover the Matzah and say:
Magid
The central focus of the Seder is
the section of Magid. Magid () means
to tell and shares the same root as in
Haggadah () based on Exodus (13:8):
- vehigad'ta l'bincha: "And you
shall tell your children, on that day, saying:
that on account of this the Lord took me
out of Egypt." However, the same Hebrew
root -- has another meaning as well and
that is to bind, join and connect. What is
the connection between telling a story and
joining together? By recounting the story
of the Exodus, we are doing more than
recalling events that occurred long ago.
Telling our story connects one generation
to the next, joining us to our grandparents
and our grandchildren.

Blessed is the Omnipresent One,
blessed is He.Blessed is He who
gave the Torah to His people
Israel, blessed is He.
The Torah speaks of four children: One is wise,
one is wicked, one is simple and one does not
know how to ask.
The wise one, what does he say?"What are the
testimonies, the statutes and the laws which the
Lord, our God, has commanded you?" (Deut. 6:20)
You, in turn, shall instruct him in the laws of Pass-
over, up to 'one is not to eat any dessert after the
Passover Lamb.'
The wicked one, what does he say? "What is
this service to you?" He says 'to you,' but not to
him. By excluding himself from the community
he has denied that which is fundamental. You,
therefore, blunt his teeth and say to him: "It is be-
cause of this that the Lord did for me when I left
Egypt" (Ex. 13); 'for me' - but not for him; If he had
been there, he would not have been redeemed."
The simple one, what does he say? "What is
this?" Thus you shall say to him: "With a strong
hand the Lord took us out of Egypt, from the
house of slaves." (Ex. 13:14)

As for the one who does not know how to ask,
you must initiate him, as it is said: "You shall tell
your child on that day, 'It is because of this that
the Lord did for me when I left Egypt.'" (Ex. 13:8)
One may thinkthat the discussion of the exodus
must be from the rst of the month. The Torah
therefore says, 'On that day.' (Ex. 13:8) 'On that day,'
however, could mean while it is yet daytime; the
Torah therefore says, 'It is because of this.' (Ex. 13:8)
The expression 'because of this' can only be said
when Matzah and Maror are placed before you.
In the beginning our fathers served idols; but
now the Omnipresent One has brought us close
to His service, as it is said: "Joshua said to all the
people: Thus said the Lord, the God of Israel, 'Your
fathers used to live on the other side of the river
- Terach, the father of Abraham and the father of
Nachor, and they served other gods. "And I took
your father Abraham from beyond the river, and
I led him throughout the whole land of Canaan.
I increased his seed and gave him Isaac, and to
Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave Mount
Seir to possess it, and Jacob and his sons went
down to Egypt." (Joshua 24:2-4)

Blessed is He who keeps His promise to Israel,
blessed is He.For the Holy One, blessed is He, cal-
culated the end of the bondage, in order to do as
He had said to our father Abraham at the "Cov-
enant between the Portions," as it is said: "And He
said to Abraham, 'You shall know that your seed
will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and
they will enslave them and make them suer, for
four hundred years. But I shall also judge the na-
tion whom they shall serve, and after that they
will come out with great wealth.'" (Genesis 15:13-14)
This is what has stood by our
fathers and us. For not just
one alone has risen against
us to destroy us, but in every
generation they rise against us
to destroy us; and the Holy One,
blessed be He, saves us from
their hand.
Go forth and learnwhat Laban the Aramean wanted
to do to our father Jacob. Pharaoh had issued a decree
against the male children only, but Laban wanted to
uproot everyone - as it is said: "The Aramean wished
to destroy my father; and he [Jacob] went down to
Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and he
became there a nation - great and mighty and nu-
merous." (Deut. 26:5)

"And he went down to Egypt"- forced by Divine decree.
"And he sojourned there" - this teaches that our
father Jacob did not go down to Egypt to settle,
but only to live there temporarily. Thus it is said,
"They said to Pharaoh, We have come to sojourn
in the land, for there is no pasture for your ser-
vants' ocks because the hunger is severe in the
land of Canaan; and now, please, let your ser-
vants dwell in the land of Goshen." (Gen. 47:4)
"Few in number" - as it is said: "Your fathers
went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and
now, the Lord, your God, has made you as numer-
ous as the stars of heaven." (Deut. 10:22)
"And he became there a nation" - this teaches
that Israel was distinctive there.
"Great, mighty" -as it is said: "And the children
of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly,
and multiplied and became very, very mighty,
and the land became lled with them." (Ex. 1:7)
"And numerous" - as it is said: "I caused you
to thrive like the plants of the eld, and you in-
creased and grew and became very beautiful
your bosom fashioned and your hair grown long,
but you were naked and bare." (Ezekiel 16:6)

The Hebrew word for distinctive,
metsuyan () might sound familiar. It is
derived from the same word as Zion (),
teaching us that Gods holy city is not just
a location, it is a way of life. God created a
special place on earth which would be the
ideal incubator for spiritual growth. The
word Zion therefore describes not only
where we live but how we must live.

"The Egyptians treated us badly and they
made us suer, and they put hard work upon
us." (Deut. 26:6)
"The Egyptians treated us badly" -as it is said:
Come, let us act cunningly with the people lest
they multiply and, if there should be a war against
us, they will join our enemies, ght against us
and leave the land." (Ex. 1:10)
"And they made us suer" - as it is said: "They
set taskmasters over the people of Israel to make
them suer with their burdens, and they built stor-
age cities for Pharaoh, Pitom and Ramses." (Ex. 1:11)
"And they put hard work upon us" -as it is said:
"The Egyptians made the children of Israel work
with rigor." (Ex. 1:13)
"And we cried out to the Lord, the God of our
fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw
our suering, our labor and our oppression."
(Deut. 26:8)
"And we cried out to the Lord, the God of our
fathers" - as it is said: "During that long period,
the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel
groaned because of the servitude, and they cried
out. And their cry for help from their servitude
rose up to God." (Ex. 2:23)

The Hebrew word for bad here
also contains the exact opposite meaning,
friendship. The Haggadah is making a
subtle observation and describing the
origins of Hebrew slavery. At rst the
Egyptians befriended the Jews and only
gradually did they begin to institute
discriminatory laws, persecution and nally
slavery but it started with friendship. This
pattern has repeated itself throughout
Jewish history where a host nation invites
Jews in and oers protection, but as the
generations go on, the hospitality runs
out and anti-Semitism begins to appear.
The pattern always follows Genesis (12:3)
"Those who bless you will be blessed and
those who curse you will be cursed." As soon
as the host country begins to curse the Jews
through discrimination and persecution, its
days are numbered and it soon follows the
trajectory established rst by the Egyptians:
from a major world empire to a historical
footnote.

"And the Lord heard our voice" -as it said: "And
God heard their groaning, and God remembered
His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."
(Ex. 2:24)
"And he saw our suering" -this refers to the sep-
aration of husband and wife, as it is said: "God saw
the children of Israel and God took note." (Ex. 2:25)
"Our labor" -this refers to the "children," as it says,
"Every boy that is born, you shall throw into the
river and every girl you shall keep alive." (Ex. 1:22)
"And our oppression" - this refers to the pres-
sure, as it is said: "I have seen the oppression with
which the Egyptians oppress them." (Ex. 3:9)
"The Lord took as out of Egypt with a strong
hand and an outstretched arm, and with a
great manifestation, and with signs and won-
ders." (Deut. 26:8)
"The Lord took us out of Egypt" - not through
an angel, not through a seraph and not through
a messenger. The Holy One, blessed be He, did
it in His glory by Himself. Thus it is said:"In that
night I will pass through the land of Egypt, and
I will smite every rst-born in the land of Egypt,
from man to beast, and I will carry out judgments
against all the gods of Egypt, I the Lord." (Ex. 12:12)

"I will pass through the land of Egypt" - I and
not an angel;
"And I will smite every rst-born in the land of
Egypt" -I and not a seraph;
"And I will carry out judgments against all the
gods of Egypt" -I and not a messenger;
"I - the Lord" -it is I, and none other.
"With a strong hand" - this refers to the pes-
tilence as it says, "Behold, the hand of the Lord
will be upon your livestock in the eld, upon the
horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds and
the ocks, a very severe pestilence." (Ex. 9:3)
"And with an outstretched arm" -this refers to
the sword, as it says, "His sword was drawn, in his
hand, stretched out over Jerusalem." (I Chronicles
21:16)
"And with a great manifestation" -this refers to
the revelation of the Divine Presence, as it says,
"Has any God ever tried to take for himself a na-
tion from the midst of another nation, with trials,
signs and wonders, with war and with a strong
hand and an outstretched arm, and with great
manifestations, like all that the Lord your God,
did for you in Egypt before your eyes." (Deut. 4:34)

There are many mystical names
of God which have dierent nuances and
associations. We often refer to His Presence
as the - she-khee-NA which comes
from the word - sha-KHEN, meaning
a close neighbor, alluding to our close,
personal relationship with the Almighty.
Names of God

"And with signs" - this refers to the sta, as it
says, "Take into your hand this sta with which
you shall perform the signs." (Ex. 4:17)
"And wonders" - this refers to the blood, as it
says, "And I shall show wonders in heaven and on
earth. (Joel 3:3)
Blood , and re, and pillars of smoke
Another explanation: "Strong hand" indicates
two plagues; "Outstretched arm," another two;

symbolically empty our cup and even

rejoice at the downfall of our enemy, but

In Egypt it says of them, "The magicians said to
Pharaoh 'This is the nger of God.' (Ex. 8:15) At the
sea it says, "Israel saw the great hand that the
Lord laid against Egypt; and the people feared
the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in
His servant Moses." (Ex. 14:31) Now, how often were
they smitten by 'the nger'?Ten plagues. Thus
you must concludethat in Egypt they were smit-
ten by ten plagues, and at the sea they were
smitten by fty plagues.
Rabbi Eliezer said: How do we know that each

Rabban Gamliel used to say: Whoever does not
discuss the following three things on Passover
has not fullled his duty, namely:
The Passover Lamb,
The Matzah,
and the Bitter Herbs.
The Passover Lamb that our fathers ate during
the time of theTemple - for what reason did they
do so? Because the Omnipresent passed over
our fathers' houses in Egypt, as it says, "You shall
say, It is a Passover-oering to the Lord, because
He passed over the houses of the children of Is-
rael in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians with
a plague, and He saved our houses. And the peo-
ple bowed and prostrated themselves." (Ex. 12:27)
This Matzah that we eat for what reason? Be-
cause the dough of our fathers did not have time
to become leavened before the King of the kings
We dont automatically recognize
the two words in "Passover" but the holiday
name is really a combination referring to
when God "passed over" the Jewish homes
before the Exodus from Egypt. The Hebrew
word is Pesach and is used not only in
Exodus (12:23) when God "passed over",
but in Isaiah (31:5) where God promises
to guard Jerusalem from all harm, "Like
ying birds, so will God protect Jerusalem,
protecting and rescuing, passing over
(pasoakh) and delivering."

not prepared any other provisions." (Ex. 12:39)
This Bitter Herb that we eat for what reason?Be-
cause the Egyptians embittered our fathers' lives
in Egypt, as it is said: "They made their lives bitter
with hard service, with mortar and with bricks,
and with all manner of service in the eld; all
their service which they made them serve with
rigor." (Ex. 1:14)
In every generation a person is obligated to
regard himself as if he had come out of Egypt,
as it is said: "You shall tell your child on that day,
it is because of this that the Lord did for me when
I left Egypt." (Ex. 13:8) The Holy One, blessed be He,
redeemed not only our fathers from Egypt, but
He redeemed also us with them, as it is said: "It
was us that He brought out from there, so that He
might bring us to give us the land that He swore
to our ancestors." (Deut. 6:23)
Thus it is our duty to thank, to laud, to praise, to
glorify, to exalt, to adore, to bless, to elevate and
to honor the One who did all these miracles for
Raise the Bitter Herbs and say:
I was a slave in Egypt. I received the
Torah at Mount Sinai. Together with Joshua
and Elijah, I crossed the Jordan River. I entered
Jerusalem with David, was exiled from it with
Zedekiah, and did not forget it by the rivers of
Babylon. When the Lord returned the captives
of Zion, I dreamed among the builders of its
ramparts. I fought the Romans and was banished
from Spain. I was bound to the stake in Mainz.
I studied Torah in Yemen and lost my family in
Kishinev. I was incinerated in Treblinka, rebelled
in Warsaw, and emigrated to the Land of Israel,
the country when I had been exiled and where I
had been born, from which I come and to which
I return. I am a wandering Jew who follows in the
footsteps of his forebears, and just as I escorted
them there and then, so do my forebears
accompany me and stand here with me today.

The name Jerusalem -
- contains the word Shalom , the
Hebrew word for Peace.' The worlds holiest
city, Jerusalem - - has the word
at its core which explains why the
Temple was constructed in a very special
manner: "hammers, chisels or any iron
instruments were not heard in the Temple
when it was being built" (I Kings 6:7). No
instruments of war or violence were not
used so that peace would be built into the
very foundation of Jerusalems holy Temple.
Jerusalem is meant to be the source for all

Rabbi Tuly Weisz is an engaging Jewish educator, a passionate Zionist and a
techie wannabee. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was educated in New York and Jerusalem
(Yeshiva College, Cardozo School of Law and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary). Rabbi Weisz returned to the Buckeye state and to the synagogue he grew
up in, which his grandfather led for close to fty years, serving as the rabbi of the Beth
Jacob Congregation from 2006-2011.
Upon making Aliyah to Israel in August 2011, Rabbi Weisz started Teach for Israel, an
organization empowering local rabbis to teach about the religious signicance of Israel
to Jews and non-Jews. He also founded Israel365, connecting people to Israel each
day through inspiring Biblical passages and stunning photos of the Land. Israel365 was
ranked by the New York Jewish Week as one of the top Jewish iPhone apps of 2011.
Tuly and his wife Abby, have three wonderful children and live in Ramat Beit Shemesh,
