Learning to Listen
Very recently, a group of 30 managers from the hospital traveled to Naukuchiatal (at the foothills of Kumaon region) and attended an inspirational workshop conducted by Mr Maaney Paul a Communications Guru. There had been many positives and earnings from this experience and the biggest was that one could perceive a sense of camaraderie that was hardly visible in the workplace. At this workshop what was abundantly clear that the key to effective delivery of services is communication, which is among the most central and natural human phenomena. Thus, it becomes an essential prerequisite for excellence in service delivery, especially in the healthcare sector, where we only deal with people. The people we deal with are stressed and so are their families. Here, effective and well thought out interactions go a long way in paving a smooth path.

Effective communication and teamwork is yet another pre requisite if we are committed to deliver high quality, and safe patient care. Communication failures are extremely common causes of adverse events in the hospital. The complexity of medical care, coupled with the inherent limitations of human performance, make it critically important that clinicians understand the need of creating an environment in which individuals can speak up and express concerns, and alert team members to unsafe situations. What we learnt at the workshop is that frequently, effective communication is situation or personality dependent. Other high reliability domains, such as commercial aviation, have shown that the adoption of standardized tools and behaviors is a very effective strategy in enhancing teamwork and reducing risk. In a healthcare delivery team, who plays an important role in communication? The answer is everyone since we all communicate all the time. The responsibility for effective communication rests on the individual with the understanding that attitudes and directions of service delivery ultimately aids in the realization of internal and external functioning. Learning to listen: In order for a free and smooth flow of ideas, thoughts and information to happen successfully, we must learn to know how to listen to the other person and during this process monitor the attitude and direction of our own thoughts. There is a difference between a work place where every one goes through the motions and a work place where people are motivated and eager to perform individually and as a group. Can we create a culture where ideas and enthusiasm of the workers are welcomed and harnessed into meaningful goals? We at PCH are determined to make our organization to be counted in the second category. We need your inputs and ideas to make that happen.

A team of medical experts from Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital met with the Vice-President and Minister of Womens Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, to discuss the possibility of establishing a super-speciality hospital in Gambia. The team was escorted to the State House by Gambias High Commissioner to India, Dembo Badjie, to meet health authorities and the country's leadership to initiate the process of making the super-specialty hospital a reality. Brikama was recommended as a suitable location to house the facility. As per plan, this super-speciality hospital would serve as a referral ground for chronic and other complicated health cases from Gambia, and its regions. Like Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital in India, the super-specialty hospital in Gambia will offer a comprehensive care through both modern and complimentary alternative systems of medicine with a concentrated focus on preventive measures. Speaking to reporters after the discussion, Dr Vinay Aggarwal, President-elect, Confederation of Medical Association in Asia and Oceania; and Chairman and Managing Director, Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital (India), reflected on the importance of their visit to the country.
