Daybreak of Learning

If theres a will theres a waya maxim realized by the College of Education Extension Services to foster learning in its adopted barangay Abucayan, Goa, Camarines Sur through its Numeracy and Literacy program which prioritizes teaching children from both the pre-school and the elementary. The extension service had its kick-off last September 1, 2012 at the community day care center, over 50 youngsters participated in the launching program, together with the presence of some of the parents. The supportive barangay officials were also visible in the said activity. To cater and promote learning on both numeracy and literacy are the main objectives of the extension service, it was a program initiated and planned by the current COED Extension Services DirectorDr. Lina Flor Amador, the project was realized through the cooperation of both the BSED and BEED third year students with the support given by the COED faculty. The program is to be carried out through the months of September and October. The decided venue for the program is at the community day care center, and to be held every Saturday afternoon. All participants are from pre-school to Grade 6, wherein the system of teaching is determined considering their grade level. There will be assigned mentors on each group, they will serve as their teachers.

The priceless gift that was probably given to us during the whole activity is the rich experience weve had with the kids. Its such an eye opener for all of us future teachers to have a first-hand experience on handling learners that are actually not in our scope. It was a day of learning for both those kids and us, a starting point of an adventure we are sure worth of publishing. During the first Saturday, in the eyes of a casual observer, one would surely have an impression that we are still getting used to the idea of teaching, that we are beginners tasked to draw our hands on experience on the teaching process and that time will come we would get used to the whole thing, what if thats not the case? Surely a lot of our fellow BSED students would agree to the trivial belief that most of us dont know how to handle kids, well, there are probably some, but their numbers arent that great. If you are willing to be child-like, sing My Toes, My Knees and Watermelon all day, and answer not less than a thousand of questions an hour then you could proudly tell the whole universe that you are a trueborn lover of kids. However, seriously speaking, it is a necessity to learn the dos and donts in dealing with kids. Why is that? Because getting to know these things would allow us to broaden our perspectives, as teachers, and it will open us to more teaching opportunities. During the extension services program, we realized that the compensation of being a teacher is the fact that someone learned from you, that youve been able to inspire your learners, they will be the living proofsthe evidence that you had a role to make a person a good individual. On the second Saturday, we had the first one on one activity with the learners, in such time, we have been introduced to the ones that we would mainly teach. In our case, we were assigned with the pre-school learners; there were seven of us in the team assigned to

teach them. We were both anxious and excited when we met the kids, being in the BSED, we were thinking of ways on how to entertain them without boring thembecause its a fact again that when a child gets bored he sleeps, and we meant that literally! Good thing that our co-teachers from the BEED have come up with a very attractive visual aid, and from then on, it all just fell into place, the kids were so participative although one of them didnt get the hang of things and slept, but to make it up he was able to actually answer correctly in the activity when he woke up. Regarding our lesson, we focused on teaching the simple things, because that, suits the learning abilities and needs of the learners. Since we handle day care and kindergarten pupils, we made sure to clearly teach them what the lesson is all about, so that no student will be left out. Many events that took place, but what is very visible is the enjoyment and excitement present in the atmosphere during the times when we would engage the kids on singing different nursery rhymes, they are all enthusiastic and laughter was heard on the fourcornered classroom. The other groups were also having a great time from what we observed, each of us really had different techniques and strategies to teach the learners, this only proves that learning can bloom out of different seeds, no matter what kind of teaching strategy we used, it all aim for one thing and that is to cater learning. This extension service allowed us to realize many things regarding teaching, it enabled us to learn important points on the other side of education, and it broke our barrier to the thinking that we are on BSED to teach high school, we learned that high school or elementary, as teachers, we have the duty to their learning.
