Over the past couple of years we have seen the Latin program grow to its largest extent to date, with 134 current students. That amazing number does not include those in the ancient history classes, and when one also considers them in the numerical equation, then that is something we all can take pride in. A huge part of this success comes from the officers and participants in the LHS, and it is with excitement that I look forward to another great and memorable year. Its Time To Start Thinking About Fora

By Mr. Earle Im greatly impressed that some of you have already started coming up to me, inquiring about your Regional and State projects. Is it too early to start? Minime! If you are new to the Regional and State Forums (the plural is technically Fora), you probably want to start thinking about what you want to do as a project, and what academic test you are going to take. Last year, at Regionals, we took 1st in Olympica and 2nd in Creative Projects, and Id love to see us come home with a 1st place Creative. There isnt a restriction on how many people can go to Regionals, so with over 50 LHS members already, we have the potential to dominate this year. Here is a list of the Creative categories to start making your determination: Charts/Posters, Drawings, Games, Illustrated Notebooks, Maps, Miscellaneous, Models, Paintings, Audio/Visual, Computer Programs, Sculpture/Pottery, Textiles, and 2D Non Graphic Art (Mosaic).

embellishment of Tolkiens work with bits and pieces of his annotations worked into the overall story, such as Gandalfs involvement with the Necromancer (Sauron) at Dol Guldur. This led Sir Ian McKellan (Gandalf) to agree with Jackson that the material filmed could easily be adapted into three films. If you wish to read more, theres an entire collection of Tolkiens works available for loan in my classroom.

Where Will You Be 12/13?

By Mr. Earle My geekiness is certainly not something I hide, nor is my love of Tolkiens writings. We have our annual Lord of the Rings Movie Marathon every spring, and Tolkiens works are interlaced thoughout my lectures. So it should not be surprising that Im going to be at the midnight premier of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first of three installments, Peter Jackson is once again at the directing helm, with Howard Shore composing those ethereal musical scores we grew to love from the previous trilogy. The Hobbit promises to be another blockbuster, with an

News: Roman altar found at Maryport dig

By BBC News The inscribed artefact was uncovered intact during an archaeological dig on the edge of Maryport. It was described as in "beautiful condition" and because it was face down in a pit its dedication to the god "Jupiter Optimus Maximus" was intact. Dated to the 2nd or 3rd Century AD, it was inscribed on behalf of Titus Attius Tutor, commander of the First Cohort of Baetasian, which came to Maryport from what is now the Netherlands. Professor Ian Haynes, from Newcastle University, said the find confirmed the theory that at some point the altars lost their significance and were used by the Romans in building work. The location was in a large pit which would once have underpinned a massive timber edifice, occupying the highest point of the ridge overlooking the Solway Firth and Maryport's Roman fort.

An altar has been discovered at the site of a Roman fort in Cumbria, England, the first such find for 142 years.

The altar is on display at Senhouse Roman Museum.
