VOCABULARY MENU
A Vocabulary menu allows you to choose the task that is just right for you, your interests, and your abilities. It is to be used to share your knowledge of the words we learn in class AND the words you choose from your reading each week. CHOOSE a DIFFEERENT ITEM from the Appetizers, Salads, or Entrees each week to complete and turn in Tuesday of the following week.

Words may come from your weekly reading. You should have a total of 5 personal words for the week. Use the following statements to help you decide if a word is appropriate for you to study.
Ive never seen this word before. I do not know what this word means. This is a word that really caught my attention. This is a word I would like to use to spice up my own writing. *Proper nouns are not good choices because they do not have true meaning.

BREAD BASKET (everyone has to do) Complete your word journal each day by writing the word, part of speech, definition , and variations. Write meaningful sentences that show you understand the word. Note that what I intend in using the word meaningful is that the reader gets the idea you actually understand the meaning of the word.

*Example of a sentence that doesnt show meaning very well: Wow, that octopus is really cool. *Example of a sentence that does show meaning: Wow, that octopus wrapped its eight rubbery arms around me and nearly carried me away to Davie Jones locker!

APPETIZERS Write each vocabulary word in a sentence. Proper capitalization, grammar, and punctuation count! Write each word. Next to it, write 2 variations of the word(think prefixes and suffixes) Make three columns. Label the first column Vocabulary Word. Label the second column Synonym. Label the third column Antonym. Fill each column for each vocabulary word. You may use a thesaurus to help you. Write alliteration phrases for each of your vocabulary words

SALADS Write a question for each vocabulary word. The vocabulary word has to be the answer for the question. For each word, draw and color a picture that illustrates the word. The picture should help you remember what the word means. Write a letter to a friend/relative, in proper letter format, using ALL of your vocabulary words. Underline each word. Write a tongue twister for each vocabulary word. Underline each word. Write a short story using each of your vocabulary words. Your story should be no more than one page, front and back. Underline each word. Write a rap song using each of your vocabulary words. Underline each word. Make a comic strip. The characters need to say each vocabulary word at least one time. Underline each word. SANDWICHES Make and complete a word search or crossword using www.puzzlemaker.com. Write your vocabulary words in secret code (include a secret code key). Challenge a parent or sibling to use the code to decode each word. Correct their work. Choose a 3rd appetizer or entre to complete. Create a new project that uses your vocabulary words. If I Were Poem. Using all of your words, write a poem in the If I Were (Vocabulary Word), I would (fill in action or descriptor) pattern. Each stanza of the poem should include a reference to the meaning of the word and what the word is not. A Play on Words. Work together with a partner to create a short skit which dramatically shows the meaning of 10 of your vocabulary words. Make sure that your write a script of your skit, and turn in a separate sheet of paper which identifies each of the 10 words, their meanings, and an explanation of how the words are represented in the skit. (This could be created with xtranormal movies.)
