Renowned Writer To Visit CSU, Chico and Butte College

Butte College is sponsoring Nick Flynn, renowned poet and memoirist for a public reading from his acclaimed memoirs, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and The Ticking is the Bomb, for a public reading on Monday, October 1 at CSU, Chico Ayers Hall, Room 106, 7:30 p.m. and for students at Butte College on Tuesday, October 2. Flynn will teach a master class on at the Butte College Chico Center, 2321 Forest Avenue, in Room 107 at 12:30 p.m. A professor in the creative writing department at the University of Houston, Flynns first memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, is at its core the story of the authors relationship with his father a drunk, con man, with a federal criminal record. This book was called a potent, distinctive autobiography and his talent considerable by the New York Times Book Review. The book also won the PEN/ Martha Albrand Award, was shortlisted for Frances Prix Femina, and has been translated into 14 languages. The Ticking Bomb was heralded as a charged, lyrical memoir that weaves the authors life with an inquiry in to our post 9/11 world, by the Los Angeles Times. He is also the author of a play, Alice Invents a Little Game and Alice Always Wins (2008), as well as two other books of poetry, Some Ether (2000), and Blind Huber (2002), for which he received fellowships from, among other organizations, The Guggenheim Foundation and The Library of Congress. Flynns poems, essays and non-fiction have appeared in The New Yorker, Paris Review, National Public Radios This American Life, and The New York Times Book Review. His film credits include artistic collaborator and field poet on the film Darwins Nightmare (nominated for an Academy Award for best feature documentary in 2006), as well as executive producer and artistic collaborator on Being Flynn, the film version of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, released in March by Focus Features. Students Free with ID. A $3 donation is recommended for community members attending the public reading on October 1.

North State Symphonys Experience Season Begins With Experience The Beat, Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue, Sept. 22 in Redding and Sept. 23 in Chico
The North State Symphonys concerts of the 2012-2013 season have unique themes and an overall theme, too. According to Music Director/Conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett, hearing live music in a concert hall is a deeper way of experiencing than we are used to. It opens doorways into other times, and other places. Thats why we are calling on folks this year to Experience the North State Symphony! Tickets for four major concerts and two smaller chamber music concert -- all following the experience theme -- are now on sale at the University Box Office in Chico and The Cascade Theatre in Redding. The concerts include selections from the lightly entertaining to the mysterious and powerful, all conducted by Pickett. Tickets can be purchased for either the four-concert season package or individual concerts. The season opens on September 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Reddings Cascade Theatre and September 23 at 2 p.m. in Chicos Laxson Auditorium with a rousing concert entitled Experience the Beat! The concert includes two works which blend jazz and classical styles, including the very popular Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. The concert also includes the beloved classic New World Symphony by Dvorak and Shostakovichs charming Jazz Suite. Rhythm is the part of music that brings people together, said Pickett. When you have a theatre full of folks all responding to the catchy beat and tunes of Rhapsody in Blue, it feels like the whole world is smiling. This is music from the Jazz Age, when Americans were exploring the world with confidence and sophisticationand having a great time. Soloist in Rhapsody in Blue is Spencer Myer, an outstanding pianist whose career has spanned the globe and whos comfortable in repertoire from the most serious to the most entertaining. Sharing that concert are some cool little moments of Russian jazz, noted Pickett. A great (and serious) composer named Shostakovich had a secret love for American jazz, and he wrote several suites in imitation of what was going on musically in the New World. Theyre a hoot. The NSS will conclude the September concerts with music you may have grown up hearing, said Pickett the New World Symphony by Dvorak. Here we are back in the classical actually Romantic mainstream, with beautifully flowing melodies and nostalgic sound pictures. Theres a beat here too, of course, not the same kind of jazz beat. Its really a heartbeat of sincere emotion as a European composer honors the beauty of Americas land and people. Just a few days after the Experience the Beat! concert, Pickett and his orchestra offer a whole different kind of experience, especially to young people. Doctor Noize, a nationally renowned performer of childrens music has written a new work with Pickett as a collaborator. Phineas McBoof Crashes the Symphony introduces kids to classical music with a lot of fun, a lot of fooling around, and a lot of music from the orchestra and guitar, bass and drums. Its a crazy mix and everyone who hears it will come out appreciating ALL the many music styles in the world. At the other end of the season, next May, the Symphony will perform the overwhelming Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, including the choral section, Ode to Joy. Choruses from CSU, Chico and Shasta College as well as four outstanding vocal soloists will join the North State Symphony. The concert is called, of course, Experience Joy! In November and February, the heart of the Symphony season will include works by Mozart, Barber, Berg and two composers named Strauss (Johann, Jr. and Richard). Independent of the four-concert subscription series, the Symphony also offers two chamber concerts, a Holiday Concert and several non-concert events including a pre-concert reception in Redding, the Mozart Mile in Chico and others. (Information on the Symphonys season is available at www.northstatesymphony.org, and a detailed multi-page brochure is available by calling the NSS Office, 898-5984.) Advance tickets for Experience the Beat range from $32 for premium seats to $6 for children/students. Purchase tickets for the Redding performance at the Cascade Theatre Box Office, 243-8877. Chico tickets are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. Season ticket packages for NSS concerts are also available at both box offices. Major sponsors of the September concerts include Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, and the North Valley Community Foundation in Chico. Pianist Myer is sponsored by Dr. Rush and Mrs. Hollie Lenroot in Redding , and Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Judy Chiapella in Chico. North State Symphony is a project of CSU, Chico and gets support from the School of the Arts and University Foundation; additional support comes from many individuals and businesses in Chico and Redding.

CSU, Chico to Present Fall Musical, The Fix, October 3-7

Add one part maniacal back room scheming. Another part seedy characters with organized crime associations. Into this mix put a dysfunctional family hellbent with political aspirations. What do you get U.S. politics as usual? No. All those elements are part of CSU, Chicos election year production of The Fix, a contemporary musical making its Chico-area debut. Presented October 3-6 at 7:30 p.m. and October 7 at 2 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre by CSU, Chicos School of the Arts, The Fix is described by director Joel P. Rogers as very evocative, very interesting and very current. Basically, the story follows a family in the pursuit of political position. The play finds them associated with seedy characters and corporations as they try to shape and prepare a family member for a run at the Presidency. However, this dysfunctional family has problems that complicate their aspirations, including, but certainly not limited to, substance abuse, deceit, and shady organized crime associations. The Fix is a relatively new musical. It received its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse on April 26th, 1997. Book and lyrics are by John Dempsey with music by Dana P. Rowe and orchestration by Michael Gibson. I saw it in 1999 at a theatre in Virginia where it was being work-shopped for a Broadway run, said Rogers. Ive wanted to do it here for several years. With it being an election year, now seemed to be the appropriate time. Rogers said the biggest challenge of this contemporary musical is getting it staged in a short period of time. We basically have two weeks to get the show staged before we head into runthroughs. That, without question, is the most challenging part. The music is complicated, but the cast is very strong so they have managed to handle that without any trouble. Cast members include some of the Department of Music and Theatres most talented actors: Ben Day, Matt Hammons, Katie Morrill, Mikey Perdue, Joe Zimmerman, Blair Palmerlee, Heather Osteraa, Ashley Garlick, Rich Holst, David Kahn, Alex Geringer, Lacey Henderson, Rich Holst, Austin Brown, Kelsey Mielle Byrne, Eric Wilhite, Keith Bratton, Tyler Campbell, Danny Beldi, and Jennifer Garlock. Joining Rogers in staging the production are Department of Music and Theatre designers Dan Schindler (set), Katie Whitlock (sound), Sandy Barton (costumes), and Mike Alexander (lighting). The play is staged in the present. The choreography utilizes hip-hop and contemporary dance styles. Music, played by a rock band, is fairly contemporary and upbeat; not your typical musical theatre style. If you like the music from Rent, you will like the music in The Fix. The Fix has plenty of sexual innuendo, drug references and dirty language. It is not recommended for children. Without question, this play isnt appropriate for young folks, said Rogers. The language is tough, the subject matter is really edgy drugs, alcohol, lots of sexual innuendo, etc. If this were a movie I would suggest at least a PG-13 rating. Rogers said audiences that come to The Fix will see it as a warning to beware of morally flawed charismatic candidates running for office. It brings into question the integrity of our current political organizations and is a warning, without question, of folks that are being placed into these roles simply because they maybe the most charismatic, well spoken, etc. Its an interesting commentary on our recent history in this country and the current political election. Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 students, and $6 children, are available at the University Box Office (898-6333). Add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related accommodations, please call 898-4325.

The Oroville Police Department has initiated a Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) organization, which consists of a cadre trained citizen volunteers. The VIPS mission is to support the OPD by providing non-enforcement services that allow sworn officers to focus on their primary mission of crime prevention and enforcement of state and city laws. The VIPS are responsible for citizen patrols, administrative support, and community services. Citizen patrols involve traveling in marked vehicles to watch for and report any suspicious activity, provide vacation checks, take pictures of graffiti, provide foot patrol during many of Orovilles special events (Kiwanis Clubs Hooked on Fishing, Feather Fiesta Days, Music in the Park series held at River Bend Park, the Salmon Festival, Festival of Lights Parade, etc.), assisting other agencies with DUI checkpoints or vehicle accidents; and responding to a call out where assistance is needed in securing a crime scene. Administrative Support gives VIPS the opportunity to work in the Oroville Police Department office or at the Centennial Cultural Center assisting other departments and the general public. Community Services involve VIPS in activities, such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Hooked on Fishing, August Night Out, Salmon Festival, Shop With A Cop, the Bicycle Safety Helmet Program, to name a few.

Volunteers in Police Service

The VIPS are currently holding a BUNCO fundraiser on Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Centennial Culture Center, 1931 Arlin Rhine Drive (on levee beside the Municipal Auditorium). Door opens at 6:00 p.m. and BUNCO starts at 6:30pm. Cost $20.00. Tickets can be purchased at Friends Hair Studio, Debbie Moore (530) 533-3902 or 9907002, LUCEDDIES, 2053 Montgomery Street, or the Oroville Police Department, 2055 Lincoln Street. For information contact (916-591-5376) M. Berry, VIPS BUNCO Coordinator. This fundraiser is given to defray costs VIPS incur in the performance of serving the community. For those who wish to contribute to positive communications between the Oroville community and law enforcement; assist in controlling, reducing and preventing crime; meet new people in varied settings; gain valuable work experience; and take pride in knowing you are part of the solution in crime reduction, please consider joining the Oroville Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) organization. The only qualifications are to be 18 years of age, good moral character, valid driver license, good driving record, no felony convictions, U. S. citizen, and pass a background check. Anyone who wishes to join the VIPS can contact the Oroville Police Department, 2055 Lincoln Street, Oroville, CA, 95966, at phone number (530) 538-2452.

Out & About in Oroville

Oroville Rock Stars
by Alexandra Heath
Many years ago a young boy living in El Cajon in Southern California kicked a rock down the dusty road on his way home from school. Picking it up, closer examination revealed that it was a piece of petrified wood. Excited with his discovery, he raced home and showed his mother. In the days that followed he found more pieces of petrified wood and other beautifully colored stones. One day he noticed an old man sitting by a building some distance from the road. The old man, who was himself a bit of a rock hound, asked the young boy if he was interested in rocks. As it happened, the road crossed the old mans land. From that time on he took the boy under his wing teaching him everything he knew about rocks and how to work with them to make jewelry and other beautiful objects. This all happened when John Scott, the young boy of the story, was only eight years old. But he learned enough from the old man that by the time he was sixteen years old he had collected a box full of tourmaline, a semi-precious gemstone, from his rock explorations, which he sold and then purchased a brand new Jeep. Today Scott serves as Event Chair for the Feather River Lapidary and Mineral Society, Inc., affectionately know as the Rock Club by its more than fifty members. Organized in 2008, the Rock Club is a federally recognized non-profit organization whose mission is to provide education about lapidary arts, minerals, and the geology that creates the rocks and stones used by their members to create jewelry and other functional and ornamental objects. Scott enjoys particularly working with 6th to 8th graders at local area schools. In addition to school outreach, members enjoy the benefits of learning as well. At the most recent Club meeting, Dawn Cozine, the Field Trip Chair, provided a fascinating slide show and lecture about the geology of the lava tubes in Lava Beds National Monument, where she and member-at-large Cheryl Kuentz made an exploratory trip prior to arranging for a Club field expedition. Field trips provide opportunities for members to develop their discovery skills and their eye for particular minerals, although sometimes the most spectacular discoveries happen by accident. Scott recently went exploring for a special kind of agate. After a full day of searching, he had only collected a partial bucketful of small pieces. Small stones can be tumbled and shaped, but collectors look for large solid pieces that can be cut into slabs. As he was packing up for the day, one of his rock hammers slipped off the tailgate of the truck and struck the tip of a rock that barely stuck out of the ground. Eureka! The chipped rock revealed the streak of green he had been searching for. In contrast to laws prohibiting the removal of plant species from public lands, minerals may be collected. Each person is allowed to collect and remove up to 200 pounds plus one piece of rock per field trip. There have been many times when the one piece proved to be too heavy to remove and it was regretfully left behind, although the stories about the one that got away linger on to be recounted at every opportunity. In addition to their educational work and the workdays and field trips, the Rock Club organizes and presents an annual Rock and Gem Show. This year they were able to secure the commercial building at the Silver Dollar Fairground. With plenty of free parking and a huge exhibition space, this years show features over 26 vendors, a food court, Club information and auction and raffles for door prizes donated by Club members. The vendors cover a spectrum from luxurious fine gold settings to inexpensive beads to Magic Floating Rocks for the kids. On September 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and September 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. you can visit the show, learn about the rocks and minerals, many from our local area, and perhaps purchase a special piece of jewelry or artwork. In keeping with the Clubs educational mission, admission is free for those under the age of sixteen. The first 100 kids through the door starting at 10 a.m. both days of the show will receive a shark tooth fossil that is approximately 12 million years old. For the members of the Feather River Lapidary and Mineral Society, Inc., whether they are hanging out together at the weekly workdays, driving to remote locations for a day or two of field exploration, or even working in their home studios crafting beautiful objects, rocks are clearly the stars of their show.
