ADULT DAY SERVICES
304-263-8873, Ext. 114
Celebrating 17 Years!
Supporting Families in Adult Caregiving
bssads1@berkeleyseniorservices.org
Program Manager: Kathy McIntyre, BSW, LSW(15+) Ext. 114
Activities Coordinator: Katherine Donovan(5+) Ext. 118
Activities Assistants: Dale Bradfield (5+), Deana Keplinger (5+),
Sarah Melchek, Shelley Lynn (5+), Lily Pryle, Jessica Seibert,
Gloria Simmons, and Kathleen Teter.
17 Years Celebrated
Adult Day Services celebrated 17 years of service to the
family caregiving community with two events, one to better
educate family caregivers of what is available to their assisted
loved ones and themselves, and the other to treat those who give
and receive services through the day program. Its surprising to
me that many people do not know what our program (and our
agency) provides the community. says Kathy McIntyre, Program
Manager of ADS. One really doesnt pay attention until they are
in the thick of caregiving responsibilities, are overwhelmed, and
dont have the time or energy to find out what is available.
Additionally, they are hesitant to ask for care assistance because
no one can take better care of (my loved one) than I can, or they
are afraid the care will be poor. Often folks will start coming to
ADS 1-2 days a week, and before you know it they are coming
most days as finances allow.
An Open House on July 16th enabled folks to see the day
program participants in action, sometimes engaging in senior
center activities and sometimes enjoying activities in their own
area. Additionally, attendees discussed important topics such as
Advance Directives including Medical Power of Attorney, POST
form, and others. Evaluative tests were offered including a Mini-
Mental State Exam (standard initial test for potential dementia),
clock test (also for dementia), and Geriatric Depression Scale.
Attendees were encouraged to show results to their physician
when possible dementia was a concern. After given free literature
from the Caregiver Resource Library (including Caring for a
Person with Alzheimer Disease and Exercise & Physical Activity,
both from the National Institute on Aging) a tour of the Berkeley
Senior Services campus was provided to enable family caregivers
to speak to key service providers and better understand what the
agency can offer seniors and assisted adults in the community
including transportation and in-home care.
Adult Day Services program participants and staff were
treated July 17th to lunch at Las Trancas Restaurant.
Coordinated and sponsored by ADS volunteer Holly West, the
meals (topped off with fried ice cream) were enjoyed by all. We
appreciate the attentive, professional service Mr. Hugo Castro and
his staff provided us, making it a real treat for all reported
Katherine Donovan, ADS Activities Coordinator.
Adult Day Services provides family caregivers respite time to
take a break from constant caregiving. It enables them to hold a
job, run errands, focus on their own or another loved ones needs,
or take a much deserved nap. Meanwhile, their loved one enjoys
assisted activities of interest in the day program or in their own
home which helps with their thinking and movement abilities in a
positive, social, & safe manner. I really dont know what I would
do without this place says family caregiver Judy Stewart. I
guess I would have to quit my job or look for a nursing home (for
husband), and were not ready for that. Families are also offered
individual care counseling, support groups, and educational
opportunities throughout the year, including the annual Caregiver
Fair to be held Nov. 14th this year.
For more information about Adult Day Services, contact
Program Manager Kathy McIntyre at 304-263-8873, e-mail

at the Senior Center
Fall Prevention for Senior Citizens
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), falls are the leading cause of injuries, hospitalizations, and
death in adults age 65 and older. One third of adults aged 65 and
older will fall each year; however, less than half of those that fall
discuss that fall with a healthcare provider.
The possible consequences of a fall are many. Fractures,
primarily hip fractures, head injuries, lacerations, and even death
are possible negative outcomes from a fall. The injuries
sustained from a fall can cause a great loss of independence
ranging for a short term loss of independence to a long term loss
of independence. Injuries sustained from a fall may necessitate
the need for a surgery or many surgeries, hospitalization, and
rehabilitation.
Prevention of falls is imperative. One way to prevent falls is by
becoming aware of potential fall hazards. Fall hazards change as
surroundings change. The fall hazards present in a persons place
of residence will be different from those present in the community.
For example, when walking down a sidewalk, stay vigilant and
look for fall hazards even when in familiar surroundings.
Here are some general guidelines to follow to prevent falls.
1. If a medical professional has suggested the use of an assistive
device for walking, use that assistive device. Keep in mind that a
variety of canes and walkers exists. For example, walkers are
available with no wheels on the legs, two wheels on the legs,
wheels on all four legs, with a seat, with no seat, with hand brakes
or with no brakes. It may take some consultation with a physician,
and/or a physical therapist to find the type of walker or other
assistive device that works best for an individual.
2. Dont attempt to get an object out of reach; bending over and
trying to stand on a step stool to reach an object often results in a
fall. An assistive device, a grabber, can be used to get to items
out of reach. Asking someone to reach the object for you is a
possibility. Rooms can be rearranged to keep items frequently
used within reach.
3. Install grab bars where needed in a residence. Grab bars
should definitely be available in the bathroom shower and by
toilet. Make sure the grab bars are securely in place and properly
installed.
4. Keep the areas where walking well lit. Install motion light
sensors to avoid fumbling for a light switch when entering a room.
5. Remove clutter and anything that could become an obstruction
from walking areas.
6. Avoid walking on uneven ground/sidewalks and wet surfaces.
7. Review medications with a physician to avoid any side effects
such as drowsiness or dizziness that may cause altered vision
which may impair walking.
In addition to the above tips, it is also beneficial to keep a means
of communication available at all times. Two options are a
portable telephone or an emergency pendant service.
Communication to emergency personnel is essential in case a fall
occurs.
If a fall does occur, it is
beneficial to have an
emergency plan in place.
Notifying family and/or friends
of the fall is especially important
if surgical procedures,
hospitalization, or rehabilitation
is required. Having a person
appointed ahead of time to
maintain the residence, take
care of financial affairs and
other personal concerns can
help to ease the stress caused
by the injury sustained by a fall.

65 and over can be found at

8th Annual Potters Bowl
Berkeley Senior Services recognizes
Randy Smith as Honorary Chairperson
Berkeley Senior Services would like to
invite the community to join us for a great
time at our 8th annual Potters Bowl,
Sunday, November 4, 2012, from 5 p.m. - 7
p.m. at the Senior Center, located at 217 N.
High Street, Martinsburg. Because of his
dedication and loyalty to our community,
Randy Smith has been named this years
Honorary Chairperson.
The Potters Bowl, which is held the
first Sunday in November, is an exciting
event that the community looks forward to
each year. The funds raised will be used to
provide services such as transportation to
medical appointments, nutrition and In-
Home Care, to enable our communitys
seniors and disabled citizens to remain
living in their own homes where they are
happiest and most comfortable.
The fundraiser begins with local
businesses, Berkeley Senior Services
board members, and volunteers who work
to prepare a variety of soups. With the
purchase of a ticket, you will have the
opportunity to choose your own hand-
crafted bowl and refill it with as much soup
as you care to eat. Also available for
sampling, will be Subway subs, Panera
Bread, cheese, apples and a variety of
desserts.
This event, planned by a committee of
volunteers who work
tirelessly year round, is the
largest fundraising event of
the year for the Senior
Center. Because of the
dedication and persistence
of these volunteers, last
years expenses for the
event were under $500,
and a profit of over $11,000
was made to help seniors
and disabled in our area.
To help exceed the goal
this year, Berkeley Senior
Services has partnered
with Bechdel Jewelers in
Bunker Hill and Pandora for
an exciting opportunity.
Bechdel Jewelers has
generously donated a
Pandora Jewelry Set,
valued over $1,000 to be
raffled off during the event.
An auction will also take place during the
evening as well.
We look forward to the Potters Bowl
each year. We are so grateful to the
volunteers and the countless hours they
put in to prepare for this event,
commented Linda Holtzapple, Berkeley
Senior Services Executive Director.
Tickets are $30.00 and now available
at Berkeley Senior Services. Raffle
tickets for the Pandora Jewelry Set are
also available for $5 each, or 5 tickets for
$20.00, and available at the Senior Center
or at Bechdel Jewelers. For more
information on how you can help Berkeley
Senior Services, contact Amy Orndoff at

Mary Rutherford lives in Gerrardstown and started riding to the

She gladly offers her positive testimony and encourages others to

I love coming three days a week! It gets me off the mountain,
where all I used to do was watch television, leaving me feeling
stuck and depressed. My granddaughter made the connection for
me with the staff at the Center, and it changed my life. I love the
staff, the activities, love the exercise classes, dancing at the
birthday bashes, the food, and especially the fun I have with my
new-found friends! I laugh from the time I get on the van until I get
home!

Marlene consistently gives
100% of herself in time and
efforts, volunteering two days
a week plus, in the

The month of July was
exceptional, because she
donated extra hours and
days to accommodate
vacation schedules, and help
with the distribution of Food Coupons, for the Senior Support

Her years of experience, attitude, knowledge, flexibility,
adaptability, bubbly personality, dedication and commitment,
are absolutely invaluable to our department, and have a huge

VOLUNTEER OF MONTH OF JUNE
Roger began his

in Adult Day Services
three full days a week
beginning in March.
He is very attentive to
the needs of
participants and alerts
staff for follow-up. Also
attentive to needs of
the program, Roger
independently takes care of set-up and clean-up. He has a
good rapport with participants and is mannerly with everyone.
Wanting to stay busy, Roger does whatever is asked of him,
including assisting with room decorating, activity preparation,
and has inventoried our supplies so staff can more readily
access needed items. Roger has been an exceptional asset
with our male participants, interacting with them and
encouraging them in the female-staffed environment. Making a
big difference in such a short period of time, Rogers donation
of time and talent is appreciated and worthy of recognition.
