Year 10 English Assessment Notification - 2012

Date: Friday 31st August (Week 7 Term 3) In class (Please note that this date is changed from the date originally published on google calendar.) Students who are absent for the task will complete it on returning to school. These students will receive zero for the task unless an appeal is submitted to and upheld by Ms Wagner. The appeal must be accompanied by documentation (see Year 10 Assessment Handbook). Duration: Weighting: Outcomes to be assessed: Essay Task You will write an essay in class in response to the following question: How does Harper Lee use the development of characters to convey significant ideas in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird? Your response should include: An argument that demonstrates your understanding of the novel. Explanation of significant ideas conveyed in the novel. Explanation of how the development of characters contributes to significant ideas. Links between the novel's context and its representation of characters and/or message. Detailed textual references and analysis of language and structural features. 45 minutes 50% of Semester Two mark 1, 4, 7, 9, 10

You will be given writing booklets on the day. You are NOT to bring any notes or the novel to class. You will be assessed on your ability to: Demonstrate an understanding of significant ideas conveyed through the development of characters in the novel. Analyse the language and structural features used to convey characterisation and ideas. Select appropriate examples to support the main argument. Demonstrate understanding of the context of the novel and make links

Demonstrates perceptive understanding of significant ideas conveyed through the development of characters in the novel. Presents a well developed analysis of how a range of language and structural features convey characterisation and ideas. Substantiates argument through detailed and highly appropriate textual reference. Skilfully integrates the discussion of the novel's context with the explanation of characters and ideas. Organises, develops and expresses ideas effectively using language appropriate to the audience, purpose and form required of an essay. This includes a sustained argument. Demonstrates a developed understanding of significant ideas conveyed through the development of characters in the novel. Presents a developed analysis of how a range of language and structural features convey characterisation and ideas Substantiates argument through detailed and relevant textual reference. Integrates the discussion of the novel's context with the explanation of characters and ideas. Organises, develops and expresses ideas competently using language appropriate to the audience, purpose and form required of an essay. An argument is present but it may not be sustained.
