Introduction
Hemorrhoids are a minor health problem that most of us face at some point in our lives. In fact, over three-quarters of people in the United States have hemorrhoids before. The peak age for hemorrhoids is between 45 to 65 years. In this e-book youll find information on what exactly is hemorrhoids and how to best deal with it and if possible avoid it altogether. What Is Hemorrhoids
The term hemorrhoids (also known as piles) refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. The swelling is a result of strain during bowel movement. Pregnancy, chronic constipation and diarrhea also cause an increased pressure in the rectum resulting in hemorrhoids. There are two main types of hemorrhoids, external and internal. The only difference between the two is that internal hemorrhoids exist inside the anus and external hemorrhoids are found under the skin around the anus. One other form of hemorrhoids is known as thrombosed hemorrhoids. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are basically external hemorrhoids but worse. External hemorrhoids can become thrombosed when blood clots develop inside the lump itself. This makes the lump extremely tender. Large blood clots can be very painful during bowel movement, walking or even sitting. Some people also suffer from bleeding hemorrhoids. This type of hemorrhoids is also associated with rectal bleeding. What it is basically is a hemorrhoid lump that has ruptured or burst causing blood to flow out from the wound. Having hemorrhoids by itself is not too serious. However if you are suffering from bleeding hemorrhoids then you need to seek treatment immediately. Do not however mistake bleeding hemorrhoids for internal hemorrhoids. A common symptom for internal hemorrhoids is also mild bleeding after bowel movement. Blood can be seen on the toilet paper or in the bowl itself. However with bleeding hemorrhoids there will be a lot more blood at a more continuous rate. As much as possible youll want to stop the hemorrhoid from bleeding. Some prefer to go to the doctor for medication whilst others prefer to rely on home remedies.

You may not know this but you may actually have suffered from hemorrhoids before. Its a condition that affects just about everyone. Most of the time though it is quite harmless and it is only when the hemorrhoidal cushions enlarge that hemorrhoids can cause problems and be considered abnormal or a disease.

What Causes Hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids have two main causes and they are diet, and toilet strain. Studies have also shown that these two causes are linked because eating bad food can lead to constipation which then leads to straining on the toilet. Diet A diet that lacks fiber contributes to hemorrhoids. This is why the western diet which is rich in processed foods has been linked to causing hemorrhoids. The simple treatment or solution to this is to take in more fiber foods such as fiber rich cereal, bananas and bread. Toilet Straining The style of our modern toilets seems to be more comfortable, but actually encourages straining. And people who read while sitting in the toilet also stand a higher chance of getting hemorrhoids due to the extra pressure to the anal veins which are caused by sitting in the toilet for too long. While diet and toilet straining seem to be the main cause of hemorrhoids, there are other factors involved. Other common hemorrhoid causes include aging, diarrhea, constipation, overuse of laxatives and even pregnancy. Fortunately for women, while pregnancy can cause hemorrhoids due to the fetus putting pressure on the hemorrhoidal veins, these cases are not serious. Nor will they harm the child. The hemorrhoids in mild cases like these will resolve themselves with no need for treatment of any kind. In most instances you will not need to go through any treatment to cure yourself of hemorrhoids because you will self heal. This is of course provided that nothing is done to aggravate the situation. In some more unfortunate cases, people who deal with chronic constipation or chronic diarrhea will also have to deal with hemorrhoids. This because the constant strain on the bowels is a cause of hemorrhoids.

What are The Symptoms Of Hemorrhoids

Many anorectal problems, including fissures, fistulae, abscesses, or irritation and itching (pruritus ani), have similar symptoms and are incorrectly referred to as hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days. Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl. However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid. Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid. In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching. External Hemorrhoid Symptoms External hemorrhoids cause most of the hemorrhoid symptoms we commonly hear about such as pain, burning, and itching. An external hemorrhoid is usually a form of hemorrhoids outside of the anus. Swollen veins will form a lump around the anal opening and if a blot clot develops, the lump will become a thrombosed hemorrhoid. This is extremely painful and one of the most obvious signs of hemorrhoid. Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms Internal hemorrhoids are a lot less painful and thus its symptoms are harder to detect. This form of hemorrhoids is less painful because of the lack of

nerve endings inside your anal canal. The basic symptom of internal hemorrhoids is itchiness. Another good sign of internal hemorrhoids is a slight bleeding (youll be able to see some blood on toilet paper or in your toilet bowl) after a visit to the toilet.

How Are Hemorrhoids Diagnosed

For us, hemorrhoids are commonly discovered in several ways. They are: When a lump (an external hemorrhoid) is felt when wiping yourself after bowel movement Drops of blood on the toilet paper The feeling of a prolapsing hemorrhoid (protruding from the anus) after bowel movements. Doctors however generally go by the symptoms and then do more in depth checks. Do note though that although the physician should try his or her best to identify the hemorrhoids, it is perhaps more important to exclude other causes of hemorrhoidlike symptoms that require different treatment. These other causesanal fissures, fistulae, perianal (around the anus) skin diseases, infections, and tumorscan be diagnosed on the basis of a careful examination of the anus and anal canal. If necessary, scrapings of the anus to diagnose infections and biopsies of the perianal skin to diagnose skin diseases can be done. As mentioned previously, external hemorrhoids appear as a bump and/or dark area surrounding the anus. If the lump is tender, it suggests that the hemorrhoid is thrombosed. Any lump needs to be carefully followed, however, and should not be assumed to be a hemorrhoid since there are rare cancers of the perianal area that may masquerade as external hemorrhoids. The diagnosis of an internal hemorrhoid is easy if the hemorrhoid protrudes from the anus. Although a rectal examination with a gloved finger may uncover an internal hemorrhoid high in the anal canal, the rectal examination is more helpful in excluding rare cancers that begin in the anal canal and adjacent rectum. A more thorough examination for internal hemorrhoids is done visually using an anoscope. An anoscope is a three-inch long, tapering, metal or clear plastic hollow tube approximately one inch in diameter at its viewing end. The anoscope is lubricated and inserted into the anus, through the anal canal, and into the rectum. As the anoscope is withdrawn, the area of the internal hemorrhoids is well seen. Straining

by the patient, as if they are having a bowel movement, may make the hemorrhoids more prominent. Anoscopy also is a good way for diagnosing anal fissures. At times, indirect anoscopy may be helpful. Indirect anoscopy uses a special mirror for visualizing a patients anus while the patient is seated and straining on a toilet. Indirect anoscopy allows the doctor to see the effects of gravity and straining on the anus. For example, the physician may be able to determine if what is prolapsing is a hemorrhoid, rectal lining, a rectal polyp, or the rectum itself (a condition called procidentia in which the rectum turns inside out and protrudes from the anus). Whether or not hemorrhoids are found, if there has been bleeding, the colon above the rectum needs to be examined to exclude important causes of bleeding other than hemorrhoids. Other causes include, for example, colon cancer, polyps, and colitis (inflammation of the rectum and/or colon). This examination can be accomplished by either flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, procedures that allow the doctor to examine approximately one-third or the entire colon, respectively.

How Hemorrhoids Are Commonly Treated

Hemorrhoid is a medical problem that is usually resolved by our bodies without any treatment or intervention. However there are cases where the hemorrhoid hurts too much or a case where the problem persists, thats when you will need to seek hemorrhoid treatment. Some treatments are meant to cure hemorrhoids altogether but others are aimed at relieving some of the pain and irritation. The following are just a few common and natural hemorrhoid treatments recommended. Taking a Sitz Bath The simplest hemorrhoid treatment is the sitz bath. All you need to do is to soak in your bath filled with plain warm water for about 15 minutes several times a day. This treatment will not only reduce any itching or pain your might feel but also reduce the size of the hemorrhoid and slowly curing you of your problem. This treatment can be used for both internal and external hemorrhoids. Using Medicated Pads Medicated pads that contain witch hazel should be used after bowel movement. Avoid using regular dry toilet paper because it will irritate the external hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is a key ingredient to this medication and is recommended because it is an astringent that will help reduce the swelling as well as the pain of having hemorrhoids. Using Cream Hemorrhoid creams such as Neo Healer can also be used as a form of treatment. This type of medication can help greatly in easing friction and are great for getting rid of irritation. Certain creams even numb the pain nerves to provide greater relief. However before you use these creams as treatment, it is advisable to get a prescription from your doctor to ensure that the cream you get is most suited for your condition. Also remember to check for any content in the cream that may cause an allergic reaction that could make your hemorrhoid condition worse.

Eat More Fiber There are some people who recommend consuming fiber supplements daily as a form of hemorrhoid treatment. Consuming more fiber can help soften the stools and ease the strain of bowel movement and avoid aggravating your hemorrhoids even more. However this treatment is better used as a preventive measure to avoid the recurrence of hemorrhoids.

The Different Types Of Hemorrhoids Surgery

Most hemorrhoids can be cured with normal and natural treatment. However if the hemorrhoid persists, doctors will usually recommend surgery to remove the hemorrhoid lump. Generally you will not have to go for surgery to cure yourself of hemorrhoids. But if your case is severe and seems to be persistent then hemorrhoid surgery is highly recommended. The different types of hemorrhoid surgeries are: Clot Removal This is a minor type of external hemorrhoids surgery and can even be done in the doctors office. The doctor will simply apply some anesthetic and then cut the clot out. The area will be tender for a while as the wound heals but the source of pain (the hemorrhoid) will be gone. Clot removal can be done with minimum complications with a competent doctor and there is hardly any recovery time. Rubber Band Ligation This treatment is commonly used for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. It is a simple treatment that can even be done in the doctors office without any special preparation. The treatment is a simple one. A small rubber band is positioned around the hemorrhoid. This will cut off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid causing it to shrivel away. In the case of multiple hemorrhoids, they are usually treated one at a time and only one hemorrhoid is treated every month. Sclerotherapy Sclerotheray is also known as injection theraphy. In this form of procedure is used for curing small internal hemorrhoids. A hardening agent is injected into the hemorrhoids causing a loss of circulation. This will then result in the hemorrhoid shriveling.

If compared to the rubber band treatment, sclerotheraphy is better for multiple hemorrhoids can it can be applied to multiple areas at once. However it isnt as effective on larger hemorrhoids. Other complications may also occur such as the development of sclerosed hemorrhoids. However these cases are rare. Infrared Coagulations This form of hemorrhoids surgery is used for smaller hemorrhoids (external or internal). Infrared light and electric current are used to burn off the hemorrhoids. This is done by aiming the infrared light at the base of the hemorrhoid, causing it to clot, then shrivel and finally recede. The only complication to this surgery is that a few people feel some pain during the treatment due to the heat involved. Hemorrhoidectomy Hemorrhoidectomy is a form of laser surgery that is only used for the most severe cases of hemorrhoids. It is usually recommended for larger internal or external hemorrhoids that are extremely painful or itchy. During this procedure, the hemorrhoid is surgically removed under anesthesia using either scalpels or laser. For this type of hemorrhoid surgery, you will usually need to be hospitalized and a recovery period will be necessary. The surgery recovery period usually last for about 3-10 days in the hospital and up to 4 weeks at home. If improperly done, hemorrhoidectomy can cause complications such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, scarring and even an inability to pass motion.

Tips For Hemorrhoids Prevention

Some people say that prevention is better than cure. That is a wise statement indeed. We may not know it but many of our common habits are the main causes of hemorrhoids. This passage will show us which habits they are as well as list out a few tips to hemorrhoid prevention. Diet Your diet can play a big part in hemorrhoid prevention. If you are accustomed to eating a lot of processed food then you could have a higher chance of getting hemorrhoids because of the lack of fiber content in those foods. The lack of roughage in your intestine means that stool cannot pass as easily which leads to straining on the toilet. Changing your diet to increase your intake of fiber such as bran cereal, fruits and vegetables are a start to hemorrhoid prevention. It is also advisable to drink more water. Doing so will make your stool softer and will reduce straining. Foods that may cause indigestion, gas or diarrhea should also be avoided in your diet. Toilet Habits Changing your toilet habit can also help hemorrhoid prevention. If possible, do not wait until nature calls to visit the toilet because this means that your stool may be dry and hard making it more difficult to pass. An important part of preventing hemorrhoids is to minimize the amount of strain put on your anus. To avoid straining, it is actually better for you to NOT sit on the toilet. Reading while we are trying to pass motion is also a bad toilet habit. This means that we spend unnecessary time sitting in the toilet when we could actually be done in about 5 minutes. Another essential and basic toilet habit is of course to wash well after youve finished with your business.

Exercise A little hard to believe maybe but exercising is another way we can help ourselves to hemorrhoid prevention. Sitting for long periods of time can also add pressure to hemorrhodial veins. It is understood that some of us have jobs where we need to be seated at all times but there are a few tips you can remember to preventing hemorrhoids while doing your job. In order to avoid unwanted rectal pressure, try to make it a point to stand and walk around for 5 minutes at least once an hour. This simple exercise can help greatly with hemorrhoid prevention. Having an active lifestyle can also reduce the pressure on your veins and keep you from getting constipated.
