It has been promoted by the organisational efforts by providing industrial training and equipment towards attaining organizational objectives. The training programme has been conducted in sugar mills in order to enhance the quality and profit of the organization. The importance of training programme is needed to update the technology extension in a well-established existing sugar mill. The training programme consists of methodology and logical way of presentation and execution of pedagogies to skilled and semi-skilled employees and of course the fresh employees after their selection as an employee in the mills. The training has been given to the employees in an appropriate manner, particularly every category of employees depending upon the organizational size, nature and other resources. This study aims to probe the training programmes conducted by the select sugar mills in Tamilnadu for evaluating its effectiveness on the basis of appraising two categories of employees opinion: administrative, non-technical and technical employees. training for safety, and training for hazards situations have been taken into account for the present study. The opinions of the technical employees are concerned with training importance, training development, training methods, performance appraisal, problems with technical orientation, and training programmes applicable to sugar mills. 3.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Sugar Industry is the second largest agro based industry after cotton textile industry in India and contributes significantly to the socio- economic development of rural population. Sugar industry also plays a leading role in global market being the world's second largest producer after Brazil, producing nearly 15 and 25 percent global sugar and sugarcane respectively. Indian sugar industry covers around 7.5 of total rural population and provides employment to 5 lakh rural people. About 4.5 crore farmers engaged in sugarcane in India. Sugar mills have been instrumental in initiating a number of entrepreneurial activities in Rural India. Indian sugar industry can be a global leader, provided it comes out of the vicious circle of shortage and surplus sugarcane, lower sugarcane recovery and yield ever increasing production cost, lack of skilled and experienced employees of the sugar factories and mounting losses. It needs quality management at all levels of activity to enhance productivity and to utilize the maximum possible crushing and production capacity. Though several factors are responsible for increase in production, it is considered training for the employees are the most important, regular proper training is

79

80

required for the employees in order to enhance production reduce martial loss, accidents, to utilize the sources to the workers and above all to develop a cordial industrial relationship. Hence, the present study focuses its attention to the training programmes being conducted by the sugar mills. Further, this study emphasis the need of training, and it's the effectiveness of training, impact of training before and after training programmes attended by the employees. It is also important to probe, whether the training programmes have made any significant change perception and level of satisfaction of the employees towards training programmes. Hence, the researcher has undertaken the study. 3.3 SCOPE OF THE STUDY The sugar mills play a very important role in the upliftment of rural economy and to some extent solves the problem of disguised unemployment and seasonal unemployment. Though the sugar mills are established and managed by public, private and co-operative sectors, a deep study is attempted here to analyze the effectiveness of training programmes to upgrade the skills and knowledge to the employees in the sugar industrial unit. 3.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY 1. mills. 4. To assess the impact of Pre -training and Post training programmes over

the attitude and perception of the employees. 5. 6. To analyse the level of satisfaction about the training programmes To offer suitable recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the

training programmes based on findings. Effectiveness of training programme conducted in the selected sugar mills is not in the same way. There are many factors which can influence the ways and needs of training programme. A thorough investigation of those factors leads to raise various research issues. This research has attempted to address the following research questions which lead to a meticulous exploration of the effectiveness of training programme of sugar mills in Tamil Nadu. 1. 2. What are the methods of training programmes in sugar mills? What are the determinants of selecting the methods of training programme? 3. How to assess the effectiveness of training programme of the sugar mills? 4. What are the various sources of knowhow to training and its effective applications?

Framework of Analysis In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the present study evaluates the data drawn from the set resources in different ways. The data obtained have been duly edited, classified and analyzed as per the requirements of the study. Various statistical parameters are used in this study for the purpose of detailed analysis. The study parameters are applied with the following statistical tools: Chi-square test, Likert five point scale techniques, ANOVA and other appropriate calculation methods to derive the results of the employees perception towards the objectives of the study. 3.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY 1. The study will not cover all the sugar industrial units in Tamilnadu. 2. Deliberately six sugar industrial units alone are taken up for the study. 3. The results of the study may not be applicable to other industries and states in India. 4. Many of the respondents were afraid of giving information about the
84

85

organization, and they felt their given information may be biased. 5. This study will not compare the sugar industrial units and their respondents perception regarding the training practices. 3. 8 CHAPTERS SCHEME The following chapters will be present in the thesis.
