DEFINITION OF TERMS Bacteria causing conjunctivitis Escherichia Coli Refers to the bacteria that will be obtained at University of the

Philippines and subjected to culture and sensitivity. Escherichia Coli is the most common and important of the coliforms it is also well known as a laboratory research organism. (Medical Microbiology 25th edition mcgraw hill 2010) Pseudomanas Aeruginosa Refers to the bacteria that will obtain at University of the Philippines and subjected to culture and sensitivity. The bacteria that most commonly cause bacterial conjunctivitis are Staphylococcus aureus,Haemophilus species,Streptococcus pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bacterial conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Most bacteria that cause conjunctivitis are spread through direct hand-to-eye contact from contaminated hands. (http://www.cdc.gov/conjunctivitis/clinical.html) Staphylococcus aureus Refers to one of the most common cause of bacterial conjunctivitis, which is obtained from the University of the Philippines and subjected to culture and sensitivity. The most common types of bacteria that cause bacterial conjunctivitis include Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually produces a thick discharge or pus and can affect one or both eyes. (http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/conjunctivitis-types.htm )

Colony Forming Unit Refers to a bacterium that was present in the diluted sample. The numbers of microbial populations are divided by the product of the dilution factor and the volume of the plated diluted suspension to determine the number of bacteria per mL that were present in the original solution. CFU is used to determine the number of viable bacterial cells in a sample per mL. Hence, it tells the degree of contamination in samples of water, vegetables, soil or fruits, or the magnitude of the infection in humans and animals. It is different from the direct microscopic counts that include both dead and living cells. (http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Colony-forming_unit)

Eye Antibiotic
Refers to the antibiotic drug used to the 3 bacteria causing conjunctivitis to inhibit the growth of .bacteria caused by eye infection.. Ophthalmic antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria that cause eye infections. (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Antibiotics,+Ophthalmic)

Human Breast Milk Refers to the mature breast milk obtained from the lactating mother using breast pump, this is also one of the treatment used to inhibit the growth of bacteria causing eye infection. Breast milk, to be specific human milk, is the milk produced by the breasts (or mammary glands) of a human female for her infant offspring. Milk is the primary source of nutrition for newborns before they are able to eat and digest other foods; older infants and toddlers may continue to be breastfed, either exclusively or in combination with other foods. McFarland Standards Refers to a solutions which will be used as a reference to adjust the turbidity of the bacteria causing eye infection. Stock solutions of barium sulfate with consistent turbidity used to compare suspensions of bacteria in the disk diffusion method of antimicrobial sensitivity tests.
