CHAPTER 2 INTRODUCTION TO STRESS:-

11

12

WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is your mind and bodys response or reaction to a real or imagined threat event or change. The threat, event or change is commonly known as stressors. Stressors can be internal or external. Internal Stressors (thoughts , beliefs and attitudes)

External Stressors (loss. Tragedy or change)

DEFINITION OF STRESS:Stress in individual is defined as any interference that disturbs a persons healthy mental and physical well being. It occurs when the body is required to perform beyond its normal range of capabilities. Stress is the way that you react physically, mentally and emotionally to various conditions, changes and demands in your life. High levels of stress can affect your physical and mental well being and performance. The results of stress are harmful to individuals, families, society and organizations, which can suffer from organization stress. Stress is a dynamic condition, which an individual is confronted with an opportunity, constraint or demand related to what he or she desires and for which the outcome is perceived to be both uncertain and important. Stress is associated with constraints and demands. The former prevent you from doing what you desire, the latter refers to the loss of something desired. Stress is highest for those individuals who perceive that they are uncertain as to whether they will win or lose and lowest for those individuals who think that winning or losing is certainty.

13

WHAT IS NOT STRESS:

Stress is not simply anxiety or nervous tension. Stress need not always be damaging. Stress is not always due to overwork. Stress cannot be avoided. Body has limited capacity to respond.

How do you respond to stress?

Its important to learn how to recognize when your stress levels are out of control. The most dangerous thing about stress is how easily it can creep up on you. You get used to it. It starts to feels familiar even normal. You dont notice how much its affecting you, even as it takes a heavy toll. The signs and symptoms of stress overload can be almost anything. Stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways, and everyone experiences stress differently.

KINDS OF STRESS
14

Stress is something that we all deal with on a daily basis. It has made itself a big part of everyday life. No matter how much we might wish or hope a world without stress would not be very good for us. We would have no reason to choose to excel which means we would soon fade into obscurity. It is true that the type of stress does not matter when it comes to the effects that they can have upon the body. The benefit to be gained comes in by being able to tell the difference between good and bad stress. By being able to correctly identify what type of stress you are suffering from you will then be able to know whether or not you should address it.

Positive Stress:15

The first type of stress that must be addressed is positive stress. It can help you to achieve your goals in life. One example of positive stress can be found in the workplace - The corporate executive who wears his power tie to the board meetings and thrives on getting up in front of everyone to give a proposal is making use of stress in a positive manner. It allows him to give the best possible presentation while not worrying about the stress of trying to make sure each of the board members will be pleased. Another type of positive stress is that faced by "soccer moms." They seem to be able to balance a hectic schedule of running between sports games, dance recitals, and band practice while still maintaining a clean and well balanced household. This stress can help her to juggle all the odd hours and schedules that she must maintain to keep her household running.

Positive Stress Results:1. Results Enables Concentration 2. Increases Performance 3. Energizes you into motion

Negative Stress: The next sort of stress that we can examine is the negative sort.
16

Negative stress can affect you on a psychological level as well as a physical one. An example of negative stress in the workplace is easily found. Take the foreman of a manufacturing plant for example. He is pushed by his superiors to maintain a high level of quality but also must meet many short deadlines. He also deals with employees who are less than willing to give a full day's work and could care less about the quality of goods they are producing. This person is liable to have extremely high levels of stress which can affect his health. He may have high blood pressure and get sick easily. He may also require medication for his depression that is stress linked. You also have stress that is family related that can be quite harmful as well. Take the single mother who is trying to raise three children, make ends meet, and works two jobs. Odds are that she faces a great deal of negative stress. Just trying to make sure that her children have a hot meal and are ready for bed on time can be hard sometimes.

Negative Stress Results:Loss of motivation 2. Reduces effectiveness 3. Physical, mental and behavioural problems
1.

Signs and Symptoms of Stress:The following table lists some of the common warning signs and symptoms of stress. The more signs and symptoms you notice in yourself, the closer you may be to stress overload.
17

Stress Warning Signs and Symptoms Cognitive Symptoms Memory problems Inability to concentrate Poor judgment Seeing only the negative Anxious or racing thoughts
Constant worrying Physical Symptoms Aches and pains Diarrhea or constipation Nausea, dizziness Chest pain, rapid heartbeat Loss of sex drive

Emotional Symptoms Moodiness Irritability or short temper Agitation, inability to relax Feeling overwhelmed Sense of loneliness and isolation
Depression or general unhappiness Behavioral Symptoms Eating more or less Sleeping too much or too little Isolating yourself from others Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax

Frequent colds

Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)

Causes of stress
The situations and pressures that cause stress are known as stressors. We usually think of stressors as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky relationship. However, anything that puts high demands on you or forces you to adjust can be stressful. This includes positive events such as getting married, buying a house, going to college, or receiving a promotion.

18

What causes stress depends, at least in part, on your perception of it. Something that's stressful to you may not faze someone else; they may even enjoy it. For example, your morning commute may make you anxious and tense because you worry that traffic will make you late. Others, however, may find the trip relaxing because they allow more than enough time and enjoy listening to music while they drive.

Common internal causes of stress:Not all stress is caused by external factors. Stress can also be self-generated:

Inability to accept uncertainty Pessimism Negative self-talk

Unrealistic expectations Perfectionism Lack of assertiveness

Common external causes of stress:Not all stress is caused by external factors. Stress can also be self-generated:

Major life changes Work Relationship difficulties

Financial problems Being too busy Children and family

HEALTH PROBLEMS CAUSED BY STRESS

CHAPTER 4:EFFECT AND IMPACT OF STRESS ON PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEE

26

EFFECT AND IMPACT OF STRESS ON PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEE

Organizational distress may be divided into two major cost categories: direct costs and indirect costs, as summarized in Exhibit 5.1. Direct costs include the loss of an individual through absenteeism or turnover; the results of the poor performance of that individual while in the workplace and the payment of worker compensation awards, health care benefits, and court-ordered awards for distress on the job. Direct costs include broken and disrupted communication between people, poor morale, faulty decisions, and aggression and violence in the work- place. The direct costs of distress are discussed first. In addition to the various direct economic costs of mismanaged stress, there are a number of indirect costs that organizations incur, which also may contributing factors be to previously discussed direct costs. Whereas researcher at the University of Michigans Institute for Social Research, studying the quality of work life, have made notable progress in developing guidelines for many of the direct costs, and the courts can help determine compensation costs, the same sorts of guidelines, procedures, and precedents are not available for indirect costing. The absence of indirect costing procedures does not make the indirect costs any less important for organizational managers and investigators. The absence of such procedures suggests that it may be difficult to trace such costs to develop accurate estimates of their magnitude.

CHAPTER 5:STRESS AND GENDER

STRESS AND GENDER

28

INTRODUCTION
Causes of female and male depression and anxiety might be quite different from each other. It is not known for sure if stress affects men and women differently. Generally, as the two genders often operate in different social contexts, both tend to develop different emotional dispositions and personality traits. Accordingly, their responses and coping mechanisms to stress situations vary. Women Women, in these days, have a lot of balancing to do between home and workplace, including balancing between social and personal requirements. The issues of maternity, menopause, parenthood, gender roles, conditions at home and workplace, familial and social support et al, often blight women`s lives in the long run. Social and Work Stress Sociological researches assert that family structure (working or stay-at-home mothers, and other models) affects performance and employee attendance either directly or interactively. Family demands and family attitudes were found to influence the absence frequency at workplaces. Experiencing a high level of burnout was associated with increased absenteeism if employees had children under six living at home or reported having difficulty with their child care arrangements. There is a strong relationship between social support and mental stress and trauma in women. It relates to a woman`s help-seeking attitude, social networks, kinship networks, and support networks. Besides these factors, adapting to a new workplace culture and reformations tends in job sectors, affects men and women alike.

Men Much of the causes of male depression and stress arise from their self nurtured identities, especially related to their professional status. "If you ask a man who he is, the first thing he says is his workI`m an executive, I`m a doctor, I`m a housebuilder," says Glenn E. Good, an associate
29

professor of educational and counseling psychology at the University of Missouri, Columbia. "Suppressing feelings and internalizing stress are acquired male traits", says Good, "On some inner level, it comes down to: If I can`t tough it out, then I`m not much of man." Work Stress For men workplace stress can have extreme consequences. In Japan, work stress related suicide rate among men has risen over the last 15 years. According to the Government`s Statistics Bureau, the highest suicide rate occurs in men from 35 to 44 years old, making it the 13th most common cause of death for men. Newspapers carried the triple suicide story in March 1998, when three Japanese menall heads of car part companiestook their lives on the same night. The reason they gave isPoor Company Finances! Uncertainty in workplace can cause high levels of stress. Lack of information or the actions of other people can negatively affect your ability to perform. Causes of uncertainty can be: Not having a clear idea of what the future holds Not knowing where your organization will be going Not having any career development plans Not knowing what will be wanted from you in the future Not knowing what your boss or colleagues think of your abilities Receiving vague or inconsistent instructions

CHAPTER 6:30

STRESS IN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS

Stress in Public & Private Sector Banks

Introduction
31

Flatter organizations, virtual teams and changing employee values mean that today's managers face a rapidly changing environment to work in. There is an enormous pressure on organizations to work in non-traditional environments. In other words, stress is a response of the body to the challenging events or any other events that places a demand on an individual. Globalization is at the center of this. It is one of the big reasons for the stress related to work. Working global means that managers and employees have to work in quite an uncertain environment; have a global mindset and be able with the unexpected. Globalization has also presented the managers and employees of organizations with many challenges. Moreover the concept of globalization has affected both the public and private sectors bank. Therefore, organizations treat this phenomenon very seriously as it directly affects their performance and ultimately their existence. Stress develops when there is a mix of demands and pressures on the person on one hand and knowledge and abilities on the other. Researchers on medical science have identified three components that cause stress. These are job and organization, social sector and intra-psychic sector. Businesses today are always on the change and therefore organizations are constantly on the way out looking for new ways of doing business.

Key Factors Affecting Stress Levels

Stress levels have been long related to job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is connected strongly to wages and salary. Therefore, wages and monetary gains have an important part to play in the assessment of stress levels. While assessing the remuneration and monetary levels in India, it must be noted that India has mostly expatriate labor. There is a strong discrimination in terms of the wages and ultimately the job satisfaction in the public and private sectors.

Comparison of Work Stress

The organizational work stress is dependent on various factors. Managers as well as employees are facing the problems of stress despite changing technologies that have made
32

lives easy. Many studies conducted over the years have accounted the stress levels of employees in various organizations. Amongst the public sector genre, banks are studied deeply. Studies conducted by our group members concluded that women in the private sector banks are more susceptible to high stress levels than the men. Public sector banks have more room for development and a low attraction in the eyes of the employees. Therefore, the study depicts results suggesting that the stress levels in private banks are more than those in public banks. In India, public sector is also blamed for being lazy in their tasks. Private sectors cannot afford to be complacent and therefore experience higher levels of stress. Women prefer jobs in public sector and government organizations as compared to men due to reasons of low workload and preference in organizations. In India, most of the government aided educational institutes have a majority of women employees. There is a wide preference in terms of job timings in public sector as compared to the private ones. . India especially being a poor country, jobs are not preferred by public sectors. In the urban market, workers are generally younger in the private sector than in the public sector. In terms of other factors, the educational level of employees is more or less same in both the sectors although the public sector again enjoys a slight edge over the private sector. In the formal private sector, there is still a high proportion of illiterate women.
