VI JIA 2013 Presentation

Dear colleagues, Once again, we would like to invite you to participate in the Young Researchers in Archaeology Conference (Jornadas de Jvenes en Investigacin Arqueolgica JIA), aimed to researchers who have not their PhD degree (including MA/Msc and undergraduate students). It is our pleasure to announce you that VI JIA 2013 Conference is organized by AINUBHA (Associaci d'Investigadors/es de la Universitat de Barcelona en Histria i Arqueologia). The event will be held in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) from 7th to 11th May 2013 at the Facultat de Geografia i Histria, Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the Instituci Mil i Fontanals, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientficas (CSIC).

The Young Researchers in Archaeology Conference

The JIA project was established in the year 2008 by a decalogue which defines the character of the conference and its philosophy. It states that the conference of JIA is a meeting and a place of debate for young researchers, promoted, organized and aimed to beginner researchers, who are not in possession of a PhD degree. Thereby promoting an active participation of this group in conferences and scientific meetings, as well as their involvement in discussions related to the present and future of Archaeology. At present, JIA is the only archaeological scientific meeting emerged from the young researchers community and directed to this group. It has a high scientific content, but also training and educational ones. It is also interesting as a mutual understanding of the research carried out in the Iberian Peninsula and in other areas. The mainstays of the proposal are, firstly, a format that promotes and encourage the debate; secondly, the exchange of ideas and opinions, and finally, the participation constraints that facilitate the participation of young researchers that often are excluded from other scientific activities.

JIA 2013 Subject matter

From JIA 2013 we propose that this year the conference becomes a forum to debate the concept of crisis in relation to our discipline. However, we do not pretend to fall into reductionism and make only reference to situations of economic crisis, like at present. In a broader sense, the term crisis (crisis in Latin and in Greek) refers to a time of change and, in fact, the two concepts are often related in the scientific literature. From this perspective, we would like that the main theme of the JIA 2013 was the crisis from three different perspectives: 1) The crisis as a motor for new perspectives of research in the currently economic framework. As a result of the economic crisis, several innovation proposals have emerged in order to open a discussion about the management models in the commercial and academic archaeology, as well as what is the place that our discipline have in the society. 2) Situations of crisis, transformation and changes in human societies. These concepts are applicable in different fields related to Archaeology and History (ecology, political science, economics and so on). We suggest the study cases to be tackled from the different disciplines of Archaeology, in order to provide a transversal understanding and to propose new models of analysis. 3) Crisis, transformation and changes in archaeological theory. Taking into account the debates of previous JIA editions, we think that is important, in a theoretical level, to focus on the problems that are set out by different epistemological currents and their contributions to our discipline. In conclusion, we suggest to develop the idea of crisis from this three different perspectives mentioned above, which come together, and therefore they will help to implement and redefine the concepts of crisis, transformation and change in both Archaeology and History.

There will be carried out the day before the sessions. Communications and debates in round table format. Following the model established in the previous JIA, sessions will be organized in round table format. Posters. For each session and free thematic. Guided tours and excursions.
