PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The LM1875 is a monolithic power amplifier offering very low distortion and high quality performance for consumer audio applications. The LM1875 delivers 20 watts into a 4 or 8 load on 25V supplies. Using an 8 load and 30V supplies, over 30 watts of power may be delivered. The amplifier is designed to operate with a minimum of external components. Device overload protection consists of both internal current limit and thermal shutdown. The LM1875 design takes advantage of advanced circuit techniques and processing to achieve extremely low distortion levels even at high output power levels. Other outstanding features include high gain, fast slew rate and a wide power bandwidth, large output voltage swing, high current capability, and a very wide supply range. The amplifier is internally compensated and stable for gains of 10 or greater.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

In this circuit the voltage gain is 27dB. The amplifier must not be operated at any gain less than 20dB as set by R4 and R5, as it will oscillate. In some cases, an inductor may be needed in series with the output to prevent instability with capacitive loads. The most common capacitive load is the speaker cable itself, and 'audiophile' leads are often worse than standard grade cables in this respect. The 1 Ohm resistor (R6) should be a 1W or 0.5W type. All electrolytic capacitors should be rated at 50V if at all possible, and the 100nF (0.1uF) caps for the supplies should be as close as possible to the IC to prevent oscillation. C1 should be a bipolar. The supply voltage should be about 25 Volts at full load, which provides a maximum of 25 Watts. To enable maximum power, it is important to get the lowest possible case to heatsink thermal resistance. Note that the supply voltage must not exceed 30V at any time - this is the absolute maximum voltage rating for the LM1875.

COMPONENTS The above circuit consists a total of 8 capacitors, 6 resistors, an IC LM1875 and a power supply with a transformer, bridge rectifier and 2 capacitors. Their ratings are given below : C1 : 2.2 mF C2 : 220pF C3 : 47mF C4 : 100nF C5 : 100nF C6 : 100nF C7 : 100mF C8 : 100mF R1 : 2K R2 : 22K R3 : 2K R4 : 1K R5 : 22K R6 : 1R IC : LM 1875

WORKING OF CIRCUIT A power of 230V AC is converted to 12-0-12 V with the help of a transformer. This is then sent to a bridge rectifier. The bridge rectifier converts 12-0-12 AC to 12-0-12 pulsated DC. Here the two capacitors convert this pulsated DC to pure DC. The input goes to the amplification IC whose one pin is grounded and another is Vcc. It functions in the comparator mode. A comparator is a device that compares the current or voltage to indicate which is larger. As the input electrical signal is provided to this comparator it will amplify this input signal and converts it into a high amplitude signal and provides it to the speaker which is the output of this circuit. The speaker will convert the input electrical signal into a sound signal which is the amplified output signal. Input to this circuit is provided with the help of a 3.5mm stereo audio jack.
